Finally, my New Bird Feeder is Finished

While the birds seemed quite happy with the platform, I was not, as I knew the snow would be an issue. So, with only what was laying around the garage, here is my opus:

The roof is plexiglass. I didn't have any large enough pieces of plywood, but I did have the grungy, etched plexi from the old garage people door. So, the birds got a 'sun-roof'!!

OK, I really tried to make this little - I even cropped it. This is one of the 1st customers - a nuthatch, I believe. At the front, which is hard to see in this light, I put a large basket for woodpecker food.

I get nuthatches, slate juncos,lots of chickadees, blue jays. I have noticed a pair of hairy woodpeckers, and today, a pair of mourning doves. I use black oil sunflower seeds, and recently added safflower seeds, in hopes of tempting some cardinals in.

Oh, that's just wonderful! I think the sunroof is a great idea...the birds probably like that just fine. Hmmm...maybe you should patent it! :-)

Birds wasting the milo in my bird feeders

I have found 9-pound bags of a mix of mostly millet with some sunflower seed and, I think, safflower seed, at a dollar-type store here called Big Lots. $7 per bag. Birds gobble it up in winter, but in the winter they'll eat anything; in the spring they are picky, kicking out the milo for the pigeons and doves, so I stop feeding them and concentrate on hummingbirds and, this year, suet for Ladderback and Downy woodpeckers. Also I have nyger thistle feeders (both metal mesh feeder and sock feeder) out for our sweet, tiny lesser goldfinches. To complete my first post in this forum, I spotted and got pictures of a male Northern Cardinal this morning, a rare sighting for our area (Albuquerque). A similar male bird (the same one??) was reported a few miles further north back in February. I also photographed a rare Vermillion Flycatcher in April. Maybe more birds are moving into my state -- and I'll have figure out how to feed them if they visit my apartment complex :)

Yup, I moved to the desert. It's ok if this bubbles back up to the top - at least it will eventually bubble back down, LOL! I have too many house sparrows at my feeder. They are scaring the hummingbirds away! But I can't find the Magic Halo ANYWHERE. Did they stop making it???

There is only one way to prevent squirrels from raiding bird feeders and that is don't have bird feeders. My neighbors (now moved away and missed) used to have several bird feeders that attracted a lot of birds. I have a bird bath that I try to keep full where the well fed birds would come over to for a drink and frolic in the water. One day my neighbor came over and his eyes popped when he saw all the birds in the bird bath which easily outnumbered those at their feeding stations. I said, 'Yup, they eat of your house and then come over here for a drink and to play' Since they moved and the new neighbors rarely fill their feeders the bird watching here has suffered (not in dry spells), but, on the good side, squirrel watching has declined significantly as well. Very nice job. Now you will get some protection from the snow and rain and so will the birds! We have most of our winter birds back now, except for the Tufted Titmice.

I have plans to hang the thistle seed feeder outside the kitchen window where the HB feeder was. I just read that those types of birds will come right up to the window for feed.

Thanks. It took them all of 1/2 hour to get used to the roof. Birds seem to be very adaptable when it comes to food - actually, come to think of it, so am I!! ;-))

The price of bird seed has really gone up in my area, but I can't help but keep buying,esp. when I see how happy the birds are (I like even the house sparrows). You've inspired me to repair an older feeder stored in the barn that has lost it's roof. I didn't want to throw it away, now I'll search for some new roofing material.

Schoolhouse, I know what you mean - 50 lbs. of black oil seed is about $28 with tax. Between the birds and the cats, I will soon be on mac and cheese!! lol. But they are entertaining. I was expecting to be working from home, so placed the feeder outside of my office window! Had my 1st goldfinch today. He must of come a long way, as he just got right in and chowed down for about 15 minutes!!

I just bought a bag of black nyger seed.......8 lbs for $14.98! I think I paid about 1.05 a pound for it last year.
I also had to buy a new feeder for the finches. So far, the little rascals haven't come to it. I planted it where the HB feeder was right outside the kitchen window; may have to relocate it farther away.

It's beautiful! Most certainly they'll stop by - I would if I was a bird.
