How to get rid of ants in a potted orange tree?
Comments (23)This thread has reminded me of one of my many nightmare stories about fire ants. These ants are simply a part of life in much of the warmer parts of this country. I was living in S. Carolina at the time. I got into my car, backed down the driveway, and started down the road. After about two or three minutes, I felt a sharp sting on my calf. Immediately, I felt stings all over, including down my blouse. A huge swarm of the ants had entered my car at some point from the time I had driven it earlier in the day till the moment they all tried to sting me at once. The nurses counted dozens and dozens of stings from my toes to the top of my head. I was bothered by 'phantom' ant stings for months after that, lol....See Morehelp!!!! ants inside my hibiscus tree pot!!
Comments (5)Hi Cele, Did you manage to sort the ants problem? I also have the same problem but they are really tiny microscopic ants and get inside the calyx. I've noticed them creeping in at night and the early morning too. I sprayed garlic spray neem oil spray but they still manage to come around no matter how many I kill. I have been hand pollinating the flowers but the ovary just doesnt mature. I wonder if these microscopic ants are preventing seed formation....See MoreMy potted lemon tree is wilting
Comments (3)Looks to me like the cold got to it somehow. I had a similar experience with a plant one year. It was in a paper bag and was only outside for maybe 15-20 seconds being transferred to and from the already warm car. Temps were around 15-20F. It looked normal when I got it inside but within a few hours the leaves all wilted and the plant died. The lower leaves look ok in your pic. Citrus can recover from cold damage so the plant will probably be alright. There are many cold-winter citrus growers here, maybe some of them will have experiences to share....See MoreMy lemon and orange trees in pots
Comments (8)Hi, Lorraine. From what I read you have an Owari Satsuma. The Owari will usually ripen sometime in November /December depending on your growing conditions and will sweeten up with cooler temperatures. If the fruit is soft and all or most of the peel has already turned a nice orange in color, it could be ready to pick/clip. It really is a guessing game with the first fruits. I would pick the one that is soft and orange and give it a try. As the tree ages the fruit will get better. May I ask why you trim the tree, Is that to keep it a certain height and contained to fit in your space? Grapefruit usually ripen up in the winter, and can hang on the tree through March or so. What variety do you have? Edit: I am sorry, I thought that I read you had a grapefruit. I see you have a lemon in the description. What variety is it?...See Morehoosierquilt USDA 10A Sunset 23 Vista CA
