Planting Priority

Hey Guys, I have a ton of plants coming in in the next couple days.

Its a wide mix of b&b and container stock.

The weather has not been cooperating what so ever so I may need to pick and chose my plantings.

#1 - Do I focus on the b&b or the container stock fist?

#2 - Do I focus on the conifers or the decidious next?

#3 - Do I focus on the early leafers and early spring flowering next (ie Dawn Redwood and Redbud)?

Anything in leaf needs to be sheltered in your garage until all dangers of spring frosts have passed. Here that is May. Probably the same for you. Next time, have them shipped (call them) when the ground is not frozen and you can dig (anytime is fine - could be end of Feb - just as long as you can dig).

Any conifers will be fine to plant now, except again, the deciduous such as: Dawn Rewood/Larch/Taxodium.... these also go into a garage or a barn, or hoophouse or greenhouse.

hey.. its crunch time .. eh

first.. i hope you get some time to dig some holes this weekend ... even if you only get it 80% done .. it will give you a fast leg up ... even if all you can get is the sod/weeds layer removed ...

i am going to presume your weather is like mine.. coldish ... ground semi frozen ... rain or snow ... yuck ...

what size BB??? the bigger the more tolerant of not caring about laying there for weeks .... i doubt it will get so hot that the ball would dry out ...

i would lean toward BB first.. as the containers can hold very long ... but even BB could probably lay there for a month in your zone ....

i would lean toward any early sprouters ... to get them in the ground as soon as possible.. to get the roots working ...

after those .. they are all trees.. so just plug away until they are all done ...

i hope your soil is more thawed than mine ... i cant get a driveway reflector back in the ground yet .... so digging would be a problem over here ..

you are way ahead of the curve .. TIMING wise ... so i wouldnt worry about them too much ....

Hey DC well, i'm totally new to the forums and to the idea of trading. please know i did read your post and didn't choose *not* to follow it. i'm just always different and a problem. laughs. i wish i could follow your post better, but honestly i don't have much to give and am unsure of what some of your abbreviations meant. and don't worry, saying no to me is easy. you don't have to explain yourself...."not interested" works just fine and no hard feelings from me. i'm a newbie dealing in carnivorous plants, just got my first few sundews 2 weeks ago and such a novice i barely know what i'm doing, but so far they haven't died. i've read everything i can find and seemingly doing everything right as i've not killed any yet and from what i've read they can die rather quickly. but i'm really good at trying to do things right. i saw you deal in a LOT of carnivorous plants and would love to have seedlings, semi-mature plants from your collection. seeds would be great, but i'm so new i'd prolly be better off w/ a semi-established plant as i have had horrific results in the past w/ seedlings from the easiest plants to grow both from 1" seedlings and from seed. is there anything we can work out? i don't have much to trade, but i am willing to pay for some plants and shipping if you'd be willing to sell a few. i am most interested in bog condition sundews that don't mind living in damp environments because of how i am potting them. i have freeze dried bloodworms to give them now (they arrived today) but unsure how to feed a sundew w/o dew production and also not sure if i should put bloodworms down the throat of the pitcher plants or not. any advice you have is appreciated, and i'd love to get a few plants from you. thanks. I have a digital scale I bought for $15 and generally use the click & ship to print my labels from home, pay for it online, then request free carrier pick up. (They don't offer parcel post as an option on the website, but with my scale I can calculate the difference.) When you purchase the priority mail from the usps website, it includes free delivery confirmation - they also now have a "scan form" which you can print & place with the package for the carrier to scan, then leave for you. This ensures the package is accounted for & tracked. I know we've all had the problem of the package not getting actually scanned into their system till the day it is delivered! Not with the new scan form! With the carrier pickup, the package is picked up right at my FRONT DOOR!!! I've generally found priority is within $1 of parcel post cost, plus, doing this from their website, I get del conf free. As an added bonus, I don't have to go wait in those horrible lines at the PO or deal with people. Like Remy, I've only had one or two packages take up to 5 days with Priority over a holiday, and that's simply because we are in the boonies. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I do a great deal of shipping this way - selling & buying stuff on ebay or swapping packages and plants. And seeing as they will deliver the mailing supplies to my door for free - why do I want to get dressed, drive to the PO, wait in line and deal with a clerk who may grow fangs, just to "save" a dollar or less? I deal with people all day at work & don't want to do it on my time, so unless it's going to save me more than $2 (with the del conf), no thanks to the PO, and to parcel post. On the other hand, I will and do use Media mail - big difference there!! Takes longer, but much cheaper for books. Just have to keep enough stamps on hand to pay for it - love it that the grocery store & ATMs now have stamps for sale!!!

Thanks Ethan, I've gotten to know the Hort director and a few others quite well in the last couple of years. I'm sure if there was something I wanted, I could get it. They had some seedling cacao's and were going to give me one but they were some of the casualties lost in their December fire they had in one of their greenhouses. They lost a bunch of plants and almost lost their ancient bonsai collection. I'm afraid I would live to see the day when the mangosteen reached the ceiling!

In much the same boat, Whaas. In my case it's stock in plant bands and styroblock trays. So not large size or anything, but......the area where these are to go had twenty inches of new snow last week, and more rain and/or snow on the way starting tonight and running into Monday. Needless to say, the ground will be in no condition to be dug in any time soon.

Ima call the supplier and see if they can hold off a bit on shipping. Otherwise, I should be able to care for these trees in the waiting period. That's one nice thing about stock from Itascagreenhouse.com.......the plants can be held for a good long time in their format, until planting conditions improve.

Sorry, should have mentioned that none of thes are mailorder. All dormant stock stock from the midwest or local grower.

Since posting my original I got four 6' wide holes already dug! Just taking a break. Heading back out to do another four and then I'll be back, lol.

Here is what will arrive on Monday (I personally picked out all this stock). Most the stock is #10 container and then 18"-24" wide b&b.

its going to go so fast.. already having the holes dug ..

took me 10 years to figure that part out.. lol ...

hope you have a dolly/nursery BB cart .. or ask the nursery to leave one for you ... they ought to loan it to you for a few days ....

I was just thinking about borrowing a dolly from my father in law...it will be so much easier hauling the plants around.

Turned out to be a nice day...19 holes dug! Now I just have to tailer them once the plants arrive!

why dont you fess up a few more bucks.. and have them DELIVERED TO THE HOLE ... next to it ..

instead of slowing the truck and lobbing them on the driveway ....

that is what TIPPING THE DELIVERY BOY is all about ... lol ...
