How can I work...knowing THIS is waiting for me???

I went to the front of the house before work this morning to take pictures of the daffodils blooming, and my husband noticed two large boxes on our front porch. We assumed it was some camping gear he ordered last week, so he went to bring it into the house and I left for work.

When I am FOUR BLOCKS from the house, Andy called and told me that it was not his camping order but my Arrowhead Alpines order!!! He took the babies out of the boxes and put them on our enclosed back porch. Like the excellent husband that he is, he took pictures to send me as teasers!!! Now I have to get through the next SEVEN hours thinking about my order...sigh. Andy told me that the order was immaculately packed, no damage that he could see (he did not unwrap tubing from the plants, so if there is damage it is low), and everything smelled wonderful. Andy also said everything looked HUGE - much larger than expected!!!

I am so excited!!!! Here is what arrived (everything that I ordered, looks like they did not need to sub anything in):

start coughing and snuffling.. and go into the boss and hack out a good one.. and suggest that an afternoon on the couch will get you back to full steam for tomorrow.. otherwise you may infect the whole place..

and run home.. and roll around under your new plants...

geez.. do we have to teach you everything.. lol ...

after you type the post... hit preview.. go down near the bottom.. and you will see the prior box with your post in it.. below that is a box to insert the webpage link to .. copy/paste the url there.. and then below type in a descriptive title ...like i did below for your link

PS: and if you just have to call in sick tomorrow.. the boss will understand... lol

If they're rootbound, by all means, go for it! If they aren't then you're welcome to change the soil and place in different, but same-sized pot. It just depends on what effort you have the time and desire for. Changing soil can help evict the possible pests. I like to water my plants before I repot/change soil and wet the new soil after the move. It kinda helps keep the roots in place and they're less brittle and sensitive. You don't have to do the pre-watering though.

I'm moving to another zone 5 that can get colder in the winter but generally for a shorter winter than we have here and overall warmer night time temps than we have here, if that makes any sense. Moving from Sierra mountains to midwest. Well I have tossed two so far, repotted one that looks to have some root life left and threw my two knock outs in a bucket together because the roots seem to still have some life so we'll see. None of thse have leaves and only one has a couple inches of green cane. I'm moving Saturday and don't have time to wait and see what is going to live or not so I'm giving them all the hope I have if I see any signs of life but at the same token do not want to haul dead plants because space is limited. I don't know which roses are own root, only that these have survived more than one winter here as planted in pots but this spring is tough for them.

Just received trees to plant, how long can I wait?

We did the same thing and received our Arbor Day trees about 2 weeks ago. They were not large enough to be consider trees, medium size weeds would be a better description. In the instructions received with the trees, it recommended that the trees be potted and maintained in pots for a year or so, before planting them in the yard. Or until they were of a size you would buy in a nursery. Since it is recommended to not plant trees in any thing but the dirt from the hole they will be planted in, We went into the back of our lot and filled 10 - one gallon pots with dirt. We then planted one tree per pot. Like other plants waiting to be planted, their home for the next couple of years will be out front porch. This has an advantage over putting them in the yard. We have a lot of wild life in our yard, deer rabbits, squirrels, and etc. Keeping the small trees on our porch will protect them from deer, rabbits, and other small animals and discourage the squirrels We live east of Raleigh and rarely experience 0 temperatures, Rarely do we get snow and if we do it last not more than a day. Those in colder ares may need to grow them in a small tree house or a hot bed.

How long can I wait to plant these lilies, plus planting question

linnea56, this fall I dug up three flower beds that were overgrown with grass and weeds and am in the process of redesigning them. I took all the various lilies from two beds and replanted in a third bed. I still have about 30 bulbs to plant and basically I've got them sitting in some slightly moist vermiculite. I've planted lilies where the top 2" of soil was frozen and they made it through our winters just fine, of course they were Asiatics. I have moved one group of lilies from one spot and replaced them with other lilies in the same spot, not problem. I don't use and kind of fertilizer when I plant bulbs in the fall although I can't see it hurting if you add some bone meal. I've also got some Canna lilies I have to dig up so will probably plant my Asiatics in their place. Hope this helps. Stan

Lucky for me, my partner is a subscriber to Dave's Garden so I was able to view your new babies.

I hope you will have time this afternoon to start planting them. I agree with Ken - time to call in sick for Friday. :-D

No planting for us today - it was 82 degrees on Tuesday, but snowed yesterday and only a high of 39 degrees today. I hope your weather is more settled.

Thankfully, my boss is a huge gardener! I bring her my extra catalogs after I've gone through them - she is not as internet savvy so doesn't know the whole rating systems, etc. Alas, I have to work tomorrow, too many projects to keep going. In less than half an hour, though...I get to go home!
