Transplanting agaves-confusing info

I have several agaves I need to move before they get much bigger. The previous owners of the house situated them poorly.

I've been doing my homework on the topic and keep finding the same confusing remarks. Some say you can move them almost anytime of year, some say move them before it get's too cold and others say move them before it gets too hot. I'm not a beginning gardener by any means but am finding the timing issue puzzling. We do have hot summers here in southern New Mexico and can also have cold winters.

I usually hang out on the garden junk, hypertufa and birdwatching forums so I know the wealth of information and practical experience that is to be had here.

The plants are now very healthy, we had to re-aim the sprinklers when we moved in, and are setting pups. The more the merrier but they need more room.
