Fall in NYC...

I got here a week ago and have enjoyed spectacular weather...till today ! WOW it has rained and spit snow and been windy....COLD. But we will be back to gorgeous weather on Thursday.

Here is what I have done to enjoy the glorious Fall:

Tuesday after I arrived I biked 2 laps around Central Park just to get back into the swing of things.

Wed. biked with my brother to do errands.

Thurs. biked 3 laps around the park and then over to the Hudson Greenway and looked at the river and Eleanor Roosevelt statue.

Friday bike to Piermont with friends had lunch by the water and biked back 50 miles round trip - gorgeous leaves

Saturday biked in the City to do errands as the rides were cancelled due to predicted rain ( which didn't come til dusk). Took pics for ThinMan at the Greenmarket.

Sunday took the train with 68 other NYCC members and went to New Haven CT and biked the North Shore to Guilford and back to New Haven. WONDERFUL leaves and views. Biked the Yale campus after...very beautiful. total 60 miles biking, train back to Manhattan and then biked to the Village Vanguard for a fabulous jazz concert....Anat Cohen.

Monday biked with 2 friends to Nyack NY and had lunch and then biked back to Manhattan . total 65 miles biked.

Tues : COLD and RAIN...biked to gym and store. walked to meet friend for lunch on upper East side. that is all

Plan to bike with friends on Thursday to Scarsdale. So far this is a great trip. Caroline ( pics after I return to Alabama)

You're making me tired! :-) I thought we did well biking 23 miles roundtrip at Hatteras! LOL...I couldn't keep up with you, Caroline.

Caroline, sounds like you're having a ball. It's great when one gets to do the things they love doing. I'll be looking forward to seeing your pix when you get back. Have a great time.

Look at the bright side..ok. I can't believe I am saying this..lol At least the folks in New York get spring and warmer weather a little bit earlier than us folks up here.. Before I fell in love with the south, I mean Florida and all the states west of that, I actually loved new York weather better than up here when my sister use to live there. I always use to wish I could move down with her, when I noticed it a few more degrees warmer than Mass. They get HUGE thundertsorms and more frequent, and their grass turns green in March instead of April like us.:-) I have been sucessful with citrus way up here, so I am positive you can, and will do fine. I think your even in a better zone than me, well by at least one number higher.lol...:-) Just stay close to this forum..ok Mike

There are no pet stores here and only one nursery with limited selection. HD has lava rock in large bags and usually I get a bag or 2 when I buy their torn bag pallets. Coir is hard for me to locate. The Houston Garden Center had it but they only have it in the spring or summer so I gotta get it then, they are only about 20 miles away. Perlite only in those little bags and it does have that very annoying habit of floating off so I've given up on it. DE I can get at the local nursery. It has been linked to an increase in lung cancer but that is in workers with chronic exposure. Pumice is not readily available but I pick it up on the beach all the time and will just start saving it for my plants. I can easily pick up a bucket full when the seaweed starts to wash in as it washes in the same time. It is hard to find what works best in each climate. What I grow plants in would kill the same plant if it were grown indoors or with different conditions and vice-versa. Some of the mixes used would require me to water plants 3-4 times per day. I often grow plants in a much richer mix simply because of drying out in summer, then the problem is how to keep them from being too wet when we get weeeks and weeks of rain. I thank everyone for their ideas and suggestions. I'm going to mix up a couple of trial mixes and repot next week. I'm off for 5 days and have to paint the library, caulk the rest of the windows, install a floor in the upstairs kitchen, paint the floor in the downstairs kitchen, get the plumber to hook up the sink and put in gas lines so we have heat in the downstairs, wait on the electrician, continue caulking the outside of the house so it can eventually get painted.....BUT I am going to repot plants and do some gardening to destress in between. The roofers set the house on fire doing Hurricane Ike repairs, took off running, didn't call 911 & haven't been seen since. We're just happy to finally be home. Ya'll stay warm. Tally HO!

Hi there KP, I have a high floor balcony just across the river in Jersey City and started a similar search around the same time as you last summer! Did you wind up trying the Japanese Maple? From what I've read, I think if it's in a non-ceramic container and wrapped in burlap during the winter months, it would be safe. I think the big concern, besides the roots freezing, is the amount of wind. I thought of different dogwoods too, dwarf river beech, rhododendrons (which I love) or boxwood; what I tried was a smoke bush, at a friend's suggestion. It held on until September or October -- even growing a little from the beginning of summer -- but the leaves didn't change color, just dried out and fell off. Then I neglected to wrap the container as I should have for the cold months (it was pure homicide and I feel terrible about it). My buckthorn are coming back now which is beyond exciting; the rosemary and lavender did well and the lambs ear thrived. I'm beginning the search anew for this year. I live on the south side on the 15th floor of a high-rise built on the tail end of the Palisades cliffs( roughly 130-150 feet above sea level), so pretty high up and windy as hell! I'd like to try a conifer this year and either smoke bush again or a small deciduous tree, like the Japanese maple for instance.

I really appreciate the input here. I figured it would take us longer than the two hours. I've heard the museum is very affecting so good point about bringing tissues. I was thinking to go in the afternoon so we could decompress afterwards, but maybe morning and less crowds and doing something after would be helpful with our mood too. Really appreciate the link to the tickets. So many un-official sites trying to make themselves seem official.

Hey Caroline, have I told you lately that you are AWESOME?!! I'm thinking that if I ever ride a bike again it will be the kind with three wheels.

So how do you get 68 bikes on a train? Roof rack?
They must fill an entire car by themselves!

You're right about Thursday. It should be a beauty here in the Northeast. Enjoy!!!

Holy Moley, Caroline! You are an animal! Hmmmmm, I hope that's not a bad thing to say about a lady. Guys love it. I'll be looking forward to the pictures.

Oh you guys...you should see the other riders. It is an awesome group of folks. I have "good" bikes at home in Alabama but up here in The City I have a very heavy 7 speed Schwinn. I wear my running shoes and am not clipped in. The other riders are on 24 speed Titanium racing bikes. As my DH says," it is the motor that counts" !! This is great country for riding and a wonderful social group as well. I have made some very good friends and we plan other rides on the side and get together outside of the club. I really appreciate the acceptance they show for this "Alabama Girl".

Cameron you do fabulously ! If you were here you would be inspired too I am sure.

Patti they pushed them between the seats on the way there and then filled the bar cars ( 2 of them were assigned to us ) on the way back. We had pizza from Pepes and soft drinks provided on the train after the ride. We all wished they had racks.

TM- no problem I can honestly say that the guys all seem to like a woman that is strong and physically active up here in the NE. I get compliments all the time ! So "animal" it is :) I will get more pics for you. c
