Moving from So Cal to NYC

I am planning to move from Palm Springs, CA to New York City in the fall. My questions are numerous on how to do this with a minimal of shock.

I have a 2-3 year old Eureka Lemon that is flourishing and looks like it may have a bloom bud and a 2 year old Owari Satsuma that looks a little less flourishing, but still healthy. They are currently in 10 inch pots and about 2 1/2 feet tall. I constantly have to pinch off root stock suckers. I feed with miracle grow acid about twice a month and water them about once to twice a week in the summer. in the winter, no food and about once a month waterings. They are both on my patio.

If the plants do flower and set fruit, should I pick it off to ease the transport (never mind how young they are!)

Can citrus be indoor in winter and outdoor in summer in NYC? How do those transitions work?

Can I just plunk these plants in a box to keep the dirt from getting all over and drive them across in the back seat of my car or do they need to be specially handled? If so, how?

Can I pretreat for insects just prior to leaving? They have shown some citrus leaf miner and I had to treat for mites last year.

Is there anything I should be doing now to ease the transition in the fall?

Any advice would be helpful.

I am sorry, no answers to your different climates, or the care of your trees but being from moving family--I can tell you that you should pack paper into the pot around the trunk of each tree and tape the paper into place. you can place each pot into a box that is taller than the pot and re-pack and tape again.. This will keep the soil in the pot and also protect the limbs should the pot tip over.Good luck with you move..

Let me add a little amen to that Pat Walsh book. I'm always refering to it, in addition to the Sunset Western Garden Book. Can't overlook Green Thumb Nursery on Sherman Way in Canoga Park. I love that place, and always find something I want there. Plus, they have a really nice seed rack inside. Classic Nursery in Sun Valley is a good source for inexpensive landscape shrubs, if you know what you're looking for. (I've never been to the one in Tarzana.) It's a bit hard to find under the big electrical towers. Which is a perfect segue for that other indispensible book for Southern California: The Thomas Guide (a book of local street maps). I couldn't live without mine. Finally, this could be a really fun day trip for you: If you take the 5 freeway to Santa Clarita, there is a highway called the 126 that runs between there and Ventura, where it joins into the 101. (Look on a map.) It must be one of the most beautiful drives in the world. There are mountains and orange groves and little fruit stands and also a place that sells dig-your-own cactuses. I've never been able to time my trip to go when the place is open, but I've always wanted to stop in there. If they're closed when you go, it's still a great ramble, either going from west to east or visa versa. Welcome to Southern California.

Thanks for the input... I think the tree and its pot are larger than they appear in that picture... I had to shift it in the pot recently and when I raised the possibility that it may need to be lifted, they guy that I hired didnt think it was possible with just the two of us... That pot is far bigger than I can handle alone when empty and would take a sledgehammer to break. If our back yard is totally walled in, I assume it would be very expensive to hire a crane to lift it out... An additional issue is that I live in a canyon and our front yard has some very tall (100'?) tree cover, thus I am concerned it would not get enough sun if I tried to plant it in the front, which is the only area it could be planted in the ground... When you say it seems "stressed" - does that mean it needs more water, nutrients, light??? What is recommended if it doesnt get repotted immediately?

Dave, that photo is beautiful and so timely! I was at the PSA sale yesterday and Nan and Emerson Willis had CS blooms on display that were nearly red the weather's been so hot. I didn't recognize the flower and when I asked they talked me into buying a big 4-tip California Sally! They sure can sell, LOL! They had Kaneohe Sunburst in bloom, too, so I asked of the two which I should get and Emerson said, "Both! You can't be without either one!" They were great and had some amazing stuff. Sally was nowhere on my list of "To Get" but I came home with one anyway. Nice to hear how happy everyone is with it. Jen

moving gas range in NYC apartment

We are currently gut renovating our prewar apartment and just went through this since we moved the location of the range from one wall to another. I'll try to explain in layman's terms (which is basically all I understand at this point!) To get final signoff on the new location, someone (DOB?) is going to come in and test the pressure on the gas line. They test to a particular pressure (3 lbs?) which is more than you'll every need in a line, but I guess they stress test it to ensure it's ok in a worst case scenario. If they apply the pressure and the line holds, then you're fine. If they apply pressure and it doesn't stay steady at that level, then there is a leak somewhere which it is your responsibility to fix. For our renovation we replaced the branch line back to the riser in our apartment (which I'm sure you have to do, especially if you're moving the line). So, in your case, that line won't have leaks. Next your gas person will have to test the two remaining areas SEPARATLEY: the building riser and the horizontal line feeder line in the basement. If the horizontal line in the basement has a leak (ours did), it has to be found and plugged. If the riser has a leak (our did not, thank goodness) then that is $$$ and quite difficult to fix because it likely requires access to others' apartments. Ultimately, you want to do all of this before the city inspector comes because you do not want to fail the inspection since it will delay your entire project. QueenBee, thanks for the packing tip. I was wondering how to do it so that I won't get dirt all over my car!

Meyermike...I do think I am nuts. Especially since I was growing *ahem* I mean killing citrus in NY 5 years ago. When we got here, I was very excited to put citrus on my patio and now that the lemon is flowering, I am beyond jubilant. Now I have to schlep them back and start killing them again!!!!

Look at the bright side..ok. I can't believe I am saying this..lol

At least the folks in New York get spring and warmer weather a little bit earlier than us folks up here..
Before I fell in love with the south, I mean Florida and all the states west of that, I actually loved new York weather better than up here when my sister use to live there. I always use to wish I could move down with her, when I noticed it a few more degrees warmer than Mass.

They get HUGE thundertsorms and more frequent, and their grass turns green in March instead of April like us.:-)

I have been sucessful with citrus way up here, so I am positive you can, and will do fine. I think your even in a better zone than me, well by at least one number higher.lol...:-)

Just stay close to this forum..ok

Distancer, don't let those Midwesterners deter you. I am able to grow my citrus collection outside from early April through November and my trees are currently
(in mid February) covered with fruit. Okay, the Midwest is an alien world for me as I've never been been further west than Key West, Fl. (but why bother anyway, really?).

MeyerMike--I lived in Plattsburgh NY (Canadian border) for awhile and kept the citrus strictly indoors--they just died. But I had not yet found all these soil recipes and misting instructions.
NJoasis--April seems a bit early, are you in south Jersey?
When we get to NYC it will be indoor/outdoor. Unfortunately, though the move date has been pushed up to June!!!! We'll just have to cross our fingers.

Distancer, actually I am just outside of NYC. My citrus are already cool acclimated as they have been in the garage all winter. They go into a very sunny, somewhat protected, southern exposure (full day sun) when I put them out. Normally, they start going out the first week of April. Yes, I watch the weather forecasts for the first week of April, but they are normally good to go by mid-April and I don't worry about them any more. Some of the citrus will already be in bloom by them, but others (Valencia orange, and Meyer's) are in full bloom by mid-April when they are out for the first time.

Well, the lemon has 1 little fruit on it and the satsuma has about 12 little fruit and even more flowers!!! Should I even attempt to leave all of them on as we drive cross country?!
