Some Dahlia Pictures to Forget Winter!

OK, I'm really sick of winter & was watching my screen saver pictures go by today (hey, what else are ya gonna do in Jan when you're up to your knees in white stuff & you don't ski??!!) & I thought I'd share some of the pictures with fellow dahlia lovers.

The first one is Wyn's Eeekk!!- He's soooo weird that everyone just loves him- he has a BIG fan club out there!

This one is Wyn's Dream Weaver. It's an AA semi-cactus - I like the color & I don't even like orange!

Wyn's Sunny Mirage will cheer up any dull winter's day. It's a B size- 6-8".

This is Wyn's Fiesta- a BB- cute little guy-- has a form similar to the Kiwi dahlias.

This A sized one is called Wyn's Dapper Dad- & if you could have seen my dad in his Christmas outfit of red blazer & vest & the red plaid slacks with the Olympic rings on them, you'd know why everyone called him "Dapper"!

We were really excited about this new one last year when it won best triple in show at the Fraser Valley Federation show in Canada. We entered it in 7 trial gardens where it scored the highest overall average for an A or AA dahlia & won us the Derrill Hart Medal! WOW- we were really surprised & thrilled!

How did I end up with so much orange in the garden? I guess because they're out in the big garden that I can't see from the house! Here's another deep orange one called Wyn's Safari Sunset. It's a big AA.

Your dahlias are beautiful! I just started growing dahlias this past year so there is a lot for me to learn. I grew 19 this past summer with fairly good success. I joined a nearby Dahlia Society so I am sure that will help me. Is Wyn's a brand name or a local grower for you?
How would I purchase the Wyn's Eeekk? Thanks Lil in Michigan.

I agree: beautiful! What's wrong with orange? Orange gets a bad rap (why?) but it's really coveted among florists along with pink, and the hotter the better.

I want that Wyn's Fiesta! And what is the name of your Derrill Hart winner? Or is it just a mere seedling with no name? Congratulations on that achievement.

We have 20 degrees, about 9 inches of snow still on the ground and the only thing that warms me up beside the dahlia photos, is a blazing fire in the woodstove.

Thanks:) 'Pink Lipstick' huh? That sounds like that might be it!! If this is the one with dark pink flowers it must be. I'll google it after a bit. Maybe your strawberries would be happier growing with a ground cover like mine are doing? They (and my Iris)seem to love it so I'm letting them! It's also the only place I haven't been ripping out that awful Sedum. Sure it's a nice Sedum with pretty flowers and all, but it just shouldn't be planted in a mixed border/garden :O Thanks Karen, I love my Lavender plants and the ease of caring for them. All they need from me is a pruning a couple times a year; every other year or so a pretty hard one in spring to keep from getting woody centers. Next spring will have to whack the 'Vera' back because they are WAY large again and it was only the year before last they got it really good. They (the 4 plants) are 2 plants planted side by side (abt. 2' on center) and over the years they have basically grown into 2 shrubs. In flower (I just went and measured :)) they are 5.5' wide!

Hmm, now I wonder if I either labeled the seeds wrong that I sent you or some of the pods crossed with the another one. OR, if the plant is really, really stressed, then the blooms and colors may be off. The lace hole pattern on the leaves of that pink one looks a lot like japanese beetle work. They do like the dahlias. That's why they have some 4 o'clocks in pots near them. The beetles are leaving my dahlias alone, having a nice time on some of the 4 o'clock leaves and dying cause those leaves are poison to them. No, I'm not crying about it either. If the insect is stupid enough to eat the leaves that are poison to them, well, tis not my fault they are that dumb. The fireworks only grow about 12 inches, so the height is correct and the leaves look the same and so does the color of the leaves. See how some of the other buds look when they open, might look better than that one, which honestly, isn't that bad a color combo, but the petals need to open more. Start talking to the plant and tell it to behave and open blooms properly. Between your side of the country and mine, along with everywhere else, everything is growing poorly or strange. My garden beds look so sad this year, I could cry. Even the zinnias are pathetic this year. Thanks karen, I think they are really beautiful too. Fran

Well I'm right there with you on the SLOW thing. I didn't get many in the ground until June I guess, but it seems really pathetically slow this year. Our weather has been wonderful so I don't know the answer. When I prepared my pots for dahlias I had a big pile of my wormy compost, some topsoil comprised of about 1/3 sand and good potting soil. I mixed those 3 things together along with Soil Moist crystals and planted in that. They were the first or near the first flowers to bloom, but the pots are black and soak up sun/heat like crazy. Maybe more compost next year? I don't think it could hurt if mixed in well and worms are good! The only tubers I've seen worms bother are already rotting ones.

Swan puts a disclaimer in their catalogue about their pics sometimes not matching due to pre-press ink colors etc. But I have had every experience dealing with names and colors that everyone here posted and I am convinced some dahlias are just hard headed. I had (the equivalent of) Awe Shucks (from Connells?) bloom last year and it was so YELLOW after the first bloom that I moved it from the orange section to the yellow section this year. So what does it do? It's been every bit the orange I thought it was supposed to be originally. I only moved it 8 feet away - same soil, ground, feeding and watering. I planted a store bought smallish rust orange tuber, planted it in the orange section in the ground and it barely bloomed at all last year. Got perhaps 6-7 small flowers. Color was 'muddy' - not at all what I thought it was supposed to be. So I moved it to a container in the 'graveyard' and this year it has been spectacular. Numerous blooms off a taller plant with rust orange blooms starting out reddish orange. The bottom line (IMHO)is that like others have said, so many factors can affect size, color and hardiness that I suspect few identical dahlias look and grow the same in any 2 gardens. I've learned to be patient (up to 3 years of no blooms even) as long as the plant looks healthy and simply accept what you get. For a color coordinated gardener like me, this advice drives me nuts but it is reality in a dahlia world. Dahlias just aren't like roses which always look like the box! DCR

I just don't like orange- never have- got in trouble with Susan Ambrose (of Camano Dahlias fame)one year for telling her one of our new introductions wasn't an "obnoxious orange"-- didn't know orange is her favorite color! Ooops!
I've been a florist for around 25 years & I still don't like to do fall arrangements- it's all that obnoxious orange >:)
Sorry I forgot to put in the name of the Derrill Hart winner -- it's Wyn's Sensation.
I just love the fact that the Derrill Hart winner is only one order ahead of Wyn's Eeekk!! so far this year!!- so much for perfection-- Eeekk!! says perfection is highly over-rated!
We still have a lot of snow & ice everywhere, too- blech- I'll put some more pictures under a new title so it doesn't take so long to load.

I like all dahlia colors. Never used to want red (mostly to keep down the numbers of flowers in my beds) now I have all kinds of reds and just ordered more LOL.

Way back when I started out with Chimacum Topaz and a very miniature orange dahlia, then realizing there were thousands more shapes colors and sizes to choose from, I stuck with oranges, bronzes, yellows to "match" what I had growing. Then came the purples, lavenders, whites, pinks, later the reds LOL..... you know how it goes!

I'm sure Susan Ambrose has forgiven you. A college friend had me over to their newly bought home. We toured from room to room while she lamented about the former owner's hideous color schemes in various rooms and the work involved in redecorating. The kitchen was behind a swinging door so when it opened, we were assualted by the most hideous smothering blue. Of course, I empathized with just how hideous the kitchen was..... only to have her tell me "I know. This didn't turn out like we had hoped!" LOL My bad.
