OK one and all... er uh, y'all, here's your chance if you're game. LOL

Did I get my contractions rite? heheeehe Right!

I must be demented for continuing this but I guess there needs to be something to do. I'm almost done with my date harvest and it's still 2 months till the tangerines start.

I did want to get in on the other thread.. So.. my $.02...
If one were to order an infected plant and did not live in the citrus belt.. the canker could be transferred to other citrus trees in ones collection right?? So my trees aren't as safe as I would hope?? just don't order trees from Florida??
Don't we have enough to stress about *proper watering proper feeding PH balance Etc..* ??
I'm sure you can all imagine a picture of me.. 34 and more gray hairs that the dark brown I'm suppose to be. But.. on an up side.. Hubby read a research that says women who stress are less likely to get breast cancer.. YEAAA for me!!! LOL

I was going to start the thread again, but decided that someone would probably BUMP it 99 times just to change the subject. There were real differences of opinion about bringing citrus into Florida, and the laws regarding that. Perhaps the "opinion" thing became too much of a "personal" thing.
For any role I may have had in that, I am sorry.
These ailments that our favorite plants can suffer from are not going to go away. I think AAE was right about that.
Not transporting trees around the country would be one way to slow or prevent the spread of these diseases. We all know how hard the citrus bug can bite, everybody wants to add this or that to their collection. Its so easy to dial 1-800-gimme a citrus tree and the UPS person will be there 2 or 3 days later with your next treasured plant. If it became illegal to ship citrus plants OUT of citrus producing states, we would all be paying big bucks to get what we want. I have no solutions, don't pretend to have any answers. I do think that open, healthy, and friendly discussion about this will benefit our hobby. PEACE, Scott

We live in the northern county of San Diego in an area adjacent to chaparral. I've seen coyotes, squirrels, bunnies, hawks, gopher (yes, I actually saw the gopher - but my husband took care of that - RIP), and I understand there are owl boxes courtesy of our HOA. The bunnies are eating my husband's lawn (and sometimes my plants). The squirrels come in to eat too. The hills are dry this time of year, but we have kept our lawn and plants watered, making them yummy meals for the critters. We finished putting up some kind of fencing we were told is used to keep bunnies out. Ironically, the bunnies chewed through the fence where the back gate goes out to the wildlands - or from the wildlands into our backyard. A perfectly sized hole with nice little bits of fence scattered around the wrought iron gate. Although I did have to chuckle about it, we did work hard putting up that fence in the hottest part of the year. The rabbits were probably laughing too (rightly so - what a couple of dingdongs we are). Now my husband wants to shoot those bunnies with a pellet gun (he'd rather use something bigger, but I don't think that's legal - I'm not sure killing rabbits is legal in our area). I can understand his frustration, but I'm glad to see all the postings - you have my sincere appreciation - and will ask him to help me out with the bloodmeal and/or ammonia. I'll let you know whether it works for us or not. If those things don't work and I can't convince my husband to replace that fencing with something more sturdy, I'm afraid the rabbits will be meeting the gopher's demise. By the way, we did try other methods to deter the gopher (hair in the tunnel, plugging the tunnel) - then I read several posts and determined there was only one way to take care of the gopher; it was not the way I wanted, but the last resort. greenpond, My favorite pet peeve! I just love it when a customer comes to my store, opens the back of their Explorer, and asks me to load that 150 lb recliner in the back which has 2" of clearance on each side. Usually, its a slightly built woman (sorry ladies!) and there is just no way I can lift that in there without tearing up myself or the furniture. That has happened more times than I can count. How are you going to unload it at home? Pulling a 150 lb recliner out of an SUV is awkward, and is a perfect way to wreck your back. You will never see anyone in the furniture business deliver in a truck that requires them to bend over and reach - or crawl into a minivan and duck-crawl with a piece. I've seen a lot of people hurt themselves or drop the furniture over the years. We in the business have developed lifting techniques and have the tools to load and handle furniture safely without injuring ourselves. When you pull up in an SUV and ask us to load into it, we are at risk of hurting ourselves as well, yet we try to grin and bear it for the sake of customer service. Here's why stores prefer not to do this. These don't load smoothly due to confined spaces, Pieces can get bumped or bruised either during loading or in transit. Because the store assisted loading, we are legally liable for damages to the piece. I learned that lesson the hard way in the 80's. And if we place it on the sidewalk and say 'there you go' then that looks bad as well, as if we don't care. That's why we offer delivery, where we have all the right equipment to load, pad, and secure in a truck a person can stand up in. But yes, delivery does cost money, and many people do not want to pay for that service. I would estimate we damage 1 piece in 5,000 on my delivery truck. Customers hauling their own run a damage rate of about 1 in every 100. Oh, the stories! Here's a couple: * Did you know boxed furniture tends to fly out of pickup trucks at about 45 - 50 mph? Goes right over the tailgate and hits the highway. When it does, the customer has no insurance to cover it, as its cargo in transit which means it requires an Inland Marine rider to your auto/truck policy. You probably don't have that rider. I've had at least a dozen customers lose boxed furniture out of pickup trucks, including 250 lb sofas that they assumed were heavy enough to stay put - smashed on the interstate. * NEVER send a man to pickup furniture during his work day. They are always in a hurry, fail to load carefully or secure, or even pad the pieces, and ultimately I get a tearful call from the Mrs. hours later asking how to repair damages. Even more true if hubby is in the construction business and has a work truck full of wood, concrete and building residue and debris. Big mistake. There are times when for whatever reason its not practical to use the store delivery service. Maybe you have a beach house three hours away, or need the recliner for someone coming out of the hospital today. If you choose to haul yourself and the piece is heavy, sometimes its best to rent a cube van with a walk ramp, hand truck, tiedowns and pads. If the pieces are lighter, then SUVs and pickups can work, but bring plenty of pads (furniture-grade, not worn-out blankets) and tiedowns. Bungee cords at the very least, camlock rachets preferred, but not clothesline rope - and never nylon rope as it stretches. Plastic palletizing wrap is a godsend to keeping pads attached to the piece while loading. Have plenty of egress for the piece in question to load. Its no good to try to get things in with one inch to spare - thats always tough. And finally, bring your own muscle to the store. We'll supervise and be glad to give loading advice! Deliveries are not a profit center for most stores. We try to break even on them (most the time I lose money with diesel at $ 4.00 a gallon) but in most cases its the safe way to do it for both bodies and the furniture. -Duane Collie

Chris2009_2009, I'll try to answer your question though I'm not an expert by any means. Sounds like instead of 8 way hand tied springs, coil springs, s-springs, blue steel springs the furniture you are looking at has rubber webs to hold the cushions up. I may be wrong here but my best guess is check out an upholstered dining/kitchen chair, usually they have a webbing underneath them to hold the upholstered seating in place and give support. Of course the furniture could just be rubber/vinyl strips going from front to back or side to side like a lawn chair.

Agree with ci lantro: exterior wall is not automatically the best choice from a ventilation standpoint. It's true that exterior wall allows the shortest duct pathway, but longer ductwork can be compensated for by 1) making sure you use adequately sized ducting (10'' is the ideal) 2) minimizing turns and 3) upsizing the blower to compensate. Thus, a 1200 cfm remote blower through a longer run of 10'' duct will likely outperform a 600 cfm blower running out the wall. The biggest reason to consider running up through the attic rather than a shorter path through the wall is simple: the latter requires that you put an exhaust duct on the wall of the house. For all of the folks worried about aesthetics, this is a big deal: do you really want some big aluminum vent stuck on the side of the house right outside your kitchen? Realize too that depending on where the wall in question is located, that you may be blowing your fumes into a potential outdoor living area, like a deck or patio. I'm much happier with the roof vent that we have, which is invisible from almost all views of the house and which exhausts the fumes 40 feet above my deck. Wall venting also makes using a remote blower much more difficult, as mounting an external blower on the side of the house is even more obtrusive than a vent. Why is this an issue? Because if there is any way remotely possible to do it, using a remote blower is far superior to an internal blower in the hood. See my earlier post for my rationale: vent hoods and noise As ci lantro says, as long as you can route ductwork up to the attic through an interior wall, it's just as effective as an exterior wall. Our range pictured above is against an interior wall. It took some creativity, but we were able to run 10'' duct (or for one stretch, 18'' rectangular duct) to the attic. debsan: you and I are really saying the same thing. I totally agree with you that if function is sacrificed for form, then it's a mistake. I was just pointing out that it is possible to have both, contrary to what Kenneth was implying. akchicago: thanks. I agree that the thread I posted was perhaps a bit overly obsessive. But there's good info there. I also strongly agree with you that there are great solutions to problems that are not top $$. I think the key is to be armed with some knowledge, and then find the best option your budget will allow. So, yes, your message is right on target. And to the OP: Don't trust your appliance store! Over and over we read posts about what folks were told by their appliance dealers (the most recent post on Appliances had the dealer claiming that Modern Aire hoods were "inferior quality low end hoods"--laughable). Their real agenda is to push the (typically) single line of hoods they carry. They are like used car dealers. The best approach IMHO is to post even the simplest questions here or on Appliance forum and you'll get good, clear and non-condescending replies--just like what...

This will be my only post to this thread. No matter how a person tries to justify, or minimize, it does not matter. It is plain and simple -- IT IS AGAINST THE LAW, and for a good reason. A lot of the problems in agriculture came from transporting plants from one reagin to another. Regards, to all. - Millet

I don't see why everyone is so paranoid ordering from Fl if the nursery is reputable and regularly checked.
When I ordered from Briteleaf the other day, I emailed Anna and broached this subject.
She said (briteleaf) is inspected every 30 days, in addition to their own self-inspection.
We also discussed Green Disease. It was only found on trees in two people's yards in Miami. 7 hours south of Briteleaf's location. So, the chance of acquiring an infected tree is so minute, I really don't think there is anything to worry over. Toni

Scott - I think you make a very interesting point. Since Florida seems to be the hotbed for citrus ailments, why is there such a concern about importing? People should be more concerned about purchasing from Florida -- a concern first voiced by Millet a couple weeks ago. -- Either way, it is illegal. So, don't do it, unless you are prepared to lose your trees.

There are other less know pests as well. The glasswing is not harmful to citrus but it harbors on it. It carries a virus that is deadly to grapes. That insect is found in centeral valley California. (Not in my area I'm glad to say) and there are other examples.
Buy tested, certified stock from a reputable nursery.

Hopeful, yep, I grow date palms, mostly varieties called Medjool and Barhi. Medjool is famous because it is the largest, with a wonderful flavor and chewy candy texture when properly cured. Barhi is the best of only a very few varieties that can be eaten yellow, before it dries. (like eating a grape instead of a rasin) When yellow it is sweet and does not have the astringet quality (like persimmon)that most have. When dried and cured, it has a fabulous caramel flavor, and is the favorite of most people who have had the chance to taste severl varieties.
Historically, oranges were all but wiped out in CA when a desease killed the roots throuout the state. The desease was brough in on meyer lemon, which is why now all you see is IMPROVED Meyer, which is desease free.
I understand FL has had huge dye offs also. Perhapse Mr Manors can tell you more about the legacy of that part of the country.

Arthur, this may be a stupid question, but are you growing date palms in pots or ground? Probably ground, right? I remember going to Ca and couldn't believe the huge palms growing in cement..They were beautiful..I didn't know anything about plants at the time, but was astonished seeing them. BTW, it was near the LAX airport.
This yr I'm trying a new experiment. Since I've been lucky growing Poncirus and Basjoo (musas) outdoors all yr, I've purchased Needle and Windmill Palms. I plan on building a shelter and mulch. I got the idea on the Palm forum where one guy in Chicago and another in 'Ontario' have successfully grown these palms outdoors all winter long. The trunk on one tree is huge..
I've some ideas on a shelter, but not sure if it'll work. Any ideas? Toni

yes I grow them in the ground commercially (although I'm a small scale grower on 5 acres, with about 1 acre of dates now, eventually looking to have 3 acres of dates the other 2 acres in a little bit of everythin.
no ideas on how to protect palms that far north, sorry.
