Zig -Zag (Cryptocereus anthonyanus)

How do you care for your zig-zag? Mine never seems to grow much, if at all and I've had for a few years now.

I planted it as a few cuttings and it does nothing but lose a piece of itself to a dry patch here or there once in a great while, that's about it!

If anything does grow a little, it gets that brown corky covering that you can peel off with your fingernail.

It sits in a west window, gets dapple sun later in the day. It gets watered when dry, either once a week, or once every two weeks. It gets a small amount of fertilizer in the spring and summer months. What else can I do to get this plant to thrive? More bright indirect light maybe??? It sits in a 6" pot and has yet to fall down over the sides, even a half inch, nothing!

it is an epiphyte, treat it like an orchid not a cactus

I do know it's an epiphyte, not sure if I'm treating it like one though and that's want I wanted to know. Guess I'll go look epi up!

Probly nothing is wrong, it may need more sun to flower, I have branches die off, and then new ones starting, I have it growing in filtered western sun, and I don't pay any attentioin it it. It hangs down and over the pot, gets orange flowers, I don't know if they come in different colors. Mine may need more shade to be more lush, and then don't flower ? Norma

what kind of soil mix? these can be grown in fir bark with sphagnum moss and watered frequently when warm

Mine is starting to flower now...
I grow it the same way I grow my Epiphyllums, they are all potted up in Sunshine No.4 mix, with some chicken grit added, this works for me.
It along with Epiphyllum anguliger and my other Epi's spend the summer outside under a fiberglas roof.
The Cryptocereus and Epi. anguliger usually form their flower buds starting the end of September. When the temperature starts to drop below 40F at night I move them to my greenhouse (minimal heat).
Some years they are already flowering, if not the buds are starting to form.
They spend the winter in the greenhouse and go back outside, undercover, in April.

Has anyone grown this from seed? I just noticed I have a seed pod forming on my C. I have never grown this or any Epi from seed, how long does the seed pod take to mature? Are there any specific growing instructions I should be aware of?
