American Beauty dragon fruit

I have a rooted cutting that I purchased of the American Beauty dragon fruit. I have done some reading on this plant and I understand that it gets quite large. I am wondering if I could place my plant in a hanging basket and let it drape over the sides? I would like to keep it in my greenhouse. Or would the pot be too small and perhaps the plant get too heavy to be in a hanging pot.

If you have any care recommendations I would love to hear them. Will the plant withstand 40F weather or will I have to cart it into the house during the winter months?

Sure you can, just make sure it and the hanging fastener are stout enough for the plant and pot. They can get to be large and vigorous.

Keep it warm, indirect light (lots), well-draining soil and tropical conditions and it will be happy.

It will withstand those temps, but keep it dry then. It won't like those temps, mind you, but as long as the soil isn't wet it will be fine.

Ok,I am going to look stupid here, but is that a Hugh fruit growing from the plant or is it part of the stem? Never saw one before...looks great!

I have several well rooted cuttings of a red fleshed variety of Dragon Fruit (I'm almost positive that it's 'American Beauty'). They have been rooted for over a year and have huge root systems. They will take off right away when planted. I'd like to trade them for some well rooted cuttings of David Austin roses, Old Garden roses, or Lonicera japonica cultivars,....... or seedlings of Wafer Ash (Ptelea trifoliata) , Bee Bee Tree (Tatradium danielli), Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata), Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum or magnificum) or American Beech (Fagus grandifolia). Oh Cactus...thank you for the information. I'm so excited I will get my dragon planted in my big hanging pot that I have ready for it as soon as it puts on more growth. For the winter it will be potted in a smaller pot in hopes it will grow quickly. I'm so excited now. I may leave it indoors in my house this winter and take it out next spring when the weather is more conducive to the plants needs.

Thank you for the picture. Your dragon looks so healthy and I love the flower bud. That sure is a big flower bud.

The rooted cutting I got is a very thin piece with 3 small pieces connected in a row (hope that makes sense). I'm thinking of taking one of the pieces and try cutting then rooting it so that I have a little more plant in my pot. Or should I wait until the plant grows and then take cuttings to make it a bigger based plant?

Ugh..sorry for all the questions, I just want this plant to survive so badly and it is quite small so I'm worried it will not pull through the winter. I had another one and lost it by what I believe may have been over watering.

No, you don't and no, it isn't - it's a flower bud that (I think) opened that night.

It would be a fruit if it got pollinated, though - it didn't, however.

I'd wait until the plant's in active growth before taking cuttings, and no worries on the questions - that's what we're here for.

That plant is so San Diego - it grew on a north-facing wall and got direct sun for only 1 month of the year. Plenty of plants there are which I don't have (but want), but I should really concentrate on the cold-hardy ones (like these going-to-sleep Sedums)...

...because they require the least amount of time. OTOH, there's only a stump to admire in winter (if that, and it's covered in snow), but I like stumps of plants in winter (see Cyphostemma), so I don't know where I am on the question....

On-topic, I'm keeping my Dragon fruit seedling indoors this winter (it's outside still).
Next year, I'm hoping for some of this massive growth I keep reading about! ;-)
