Your 'Discount Bulbs' Status Report- How're they doing?
Comments (9)They certainly weren't discounted but out of 12 "Woodstock" Hyacinth only ONE came out advertised Maroon color. Out of 6 "City of Haarlem" none were advertised pale Yellow color. Disappointed with "color combo" plans gone amiss but more than overcome with their fragrance. Those purple tulips are gorgeous. ****What is that red foliage among the pink tulips??? Looks beautiful together. Does it spread enough to cover dying tulip foliage or do you overplant with annuals? Your plantings are so orderly and well plannned. I love it. Rjinga...don't you have any deer or rabbits who get at your flowers? Most of my tulips went into containers. Ones I planted in ground got the heck sprayed out of them with critter repellants. None were eaten but most of tulips in ground haven't bloomed yet. My late season discount impulse purchases have been about half bloomers. Don't know if I should toss ones that didn't bloom or hope for next year. Don't think it's worth saving them since don't even know what color or form they are and won't leave in garden since I already have misplaced bulb plantings! Guess I could plant them in some out of the way place and take what comes. A surprise flower or two in an unexpected place out back would be a welcome sight next spring. Amazing what one doesn't know with first year attempts even after reading what I could. Procrastination is not a gardener's friend...planning is....See MoreShow me your pot.....of Gasteria!
Comments (15)I got this gasteria as a normal looking offset from a monstrose G. nigricans... sure looks different from the monstrose form plus it's much bigger. The pot is about 18 inches long. Here are a couple of crested/monstrose forms: G. 'Warthog' G. carinata var. verrucosa...See MoreGasteria gifts! How do I repot?
Comments (10)I don't think you really need to pot them all together - they pup so often when treated well that you will have a clump with each in no time! Here is my Gasteria 'Little Warty' last July when I bought it: And here it is today, just one year later: Mine would probably be even bigger if I put it in a bigger pot. =)...See MoreWatering + Gritty Mix + Haworthia/Gasteria? Overwatering?
Comments (13)Rina - It's because I threw all the dead ones away. Just kidding! It was only a few... really.. =) SucculentCity - A couple key questions come to mind: Are all your Haworthia showing similar issues? Which specific species are showing dehydration/stress? Are they newish plants to you or well established over many (4+) months? There's probably many other considerations... if it wasn't so late maybe I could remember them! There are many many ways to tweak individual pot mixes and other factors. I think I'm always fiddling with my plants and trying slightly different things to see if it helps them grow better. 1. A few or all: If there are just a few outliers, then you could consider just repotting and adjusting the mix of those plants. If it is everything, than maybe there is a more global/overall change that you could to help reduce the watering burden. 2. Picky Species: I find H. cooperi to be fairly forgiving. Even both these plants receive the same growing conditions you can see how much more stressed the H. pygmaea is. In this case, I'm not bothered too much because I like the colours and the plant is still pupping. This H. venusta hybrid is extremely easy to stress and stunt growth, while the H. bayeri beside it wants more light! Conversely, this H. venusta is still getting fully established but can take more light than the one above. These are pickier species to grow (supposedly very rot prone) and I am much more careful where I put them under my lights. And what about H. lockwoodi? It's a fickle beast! Too late on watering just a couple days and the outer leaves start to dry up and turn into onion skins. 3. New vs. established: I am very particular where I put my plants. The newer additions go in different shelf areas and I put them at the edges of my grow areas and keep my lights slightly further away to reduce stress on them. The ones that I've had for much longer have much more freedom to go anywhere. I prefer to put them in the highest light areas to maximize their growth. With grow lights and reflectors, there is a brighter area in the middle and the light falls off at the edges. That exact light distribution is an important consideration and helpful in optimizing space usage/light utilization....See Moregreenlarry
