Citrus plant sale and what to do

A local gsrden center is having a half off sale on all citrus plants left. They have a few differnt varieties (lemon, lime, and orange). I have enjoyed working with my existing plants this past year, but I do not have enough indoor space to store them all over an 8b winter. I have seen a few mentions in the past on other sites about keeping them in a garage with zero additional heat. Does anyone have any experience with this? Even if they survive a potential cold snap (not common but they do happen here- into low 20) it would seem to me the low levels of light would hinder fruit production and setting.

If you do have had success with this approach, any of your tips wold be appreciated (water schedule, protection, etc). This may lo enable me to expand my olive collection as well.

You could keep them outdoors as long as the temperatures were above 32F.

Depends how cold it gets in your garage, arkberry, and what varieties of citrus you're planning on overwintering in there. They'll need grow lights, and possibly some protection from the cold. Most mandarins may be okay, same with kumquats. Other more sensitive citrus may has issues if your garage drops below 32 degrees for any length of time, like limes. Need more info to advise you.

Your citrus should be OK in their containers until spring. I would give them each a tablespoon of citrus food monthly and water them weekly enough till you see water drain from the pots drain holes. Protect from heavy winter frost. Al

mksmth. This is a handsome and well balanced tree you have. Lot of leaves. Very nice. Hi, Mike. Thank for the well thought check list you have come up. Here is what I am going to do . I am using fish emulsion to spray all my container plants , not limited to citrus; However, I have not figured out how to get ride of slugs and ants hiding/nest inside of my containers. I don't want them to live indoor. I plan to repot my citrus that you have recommend to use 511 mix. I have enough pine bark ready to make a batch of modified 511 mix. I never had problem of citrus die in wintertime for I don't water my plants as often as others do. The plants' root zone gets dry from time to time to maintain its health. So I like my mix a little less fast drain. BTW,Fall is a good time to buy pots as well. Many stores have deep discounted pots on sale, especially the clay pots. I plan to grow them in as dim light as possible, and as cool temperatures as possible, as long as they don't loose leaves. Yours are in "very cool bright room ". I remember your formular of bright light + low temerature=loose leaves. Do your citrus trees loos leaves in winter?? Some citrus can take cold temp. better than others, so I am not planing to bring them all in at same time.... my back will have less complaining . I don't fertilize plant that much in winter so I don't need additional fertilizer. BTW I have never seen expiration date on fertilizer bag/container. How long a bag of fertilizer can be stored without loss its effectiveness?? I am planing to put together a PVC structure to hold the lights up. I like the one houstontexas123 has posted. It is simply and workable. I am looking through Goodwell stores every other weeks in hoping to find enough Qty of cheap, large, deep container/dishes or something for each of my plants/pots to sit inside. Those plants that are in gritty mix, 90% of the water that I pour in on the top ended up running off at the bottom. I need to have a deep enough cotainer to catch all the water before the water overflow and ruin the carpet or wood floor.

Nirmal, welcome.. I am not well versed in ground citrus. but let me try to use common sense:-) Have you given it any thought that you might have a pest problem? Maybe too much organic material which could clog your soil and suffocate your roots? Maybe the way you water? Maybe over fertilizin? Is the compost fresh or composted? Might you be killing the roots by burning them? I am thinking that maybe you should find out what your neighbor is doing and if you don't talk, then at least try to carbon copy what they do. Are they adding the materials to the the soil like you are? I would ask if I could take a close look at the soil and what if anything they do to it for their trees. I would inspect closely for pests since one yard could have them and then the next, nothing. I would also inspect for mildew, mold, and or fungus. Can you take a picture?

I don't sell at a Farmer's Market, but in the growing season, I shop the Roanoke Farmer's Market every Saturday. I wait impatiently for the broccoli to finally make it to market, and buy several pounds a week until it's gone. My favorite purchase are the side shoots that kydaylilylady mentioned. The stems are thinner and more tender and I have very little to send to the compost. :) I don't know if you are in my area or not, but please consider growing broccoli! If you sell at my market I'll be a weekly customer. Meg :)

And I have a different philosophy than many here, lol. I say, "Less is Best; more is not better; quality not quantity." I know, I know...you can never have enough plants, right?

Do I sound like a recovering plant addict? :-) Ark, do some good research before adding too many more plants. You don't want to bring them into an environment in which they can not be properly be taken care of. Your enjoyment of the plants would plummet if that happened.

But, many have had successful experiences with this kind of situation so I think we'll hear some good stories.

Hah, Mike you slay me. Yes, can't have enough trees! It's fun if you can have several different varieties for sure, but I know some folks have space limitations as well as perhaps budget limitations (after my $850 water bill, that would put me in the latter category). Here's what happens when you can't resist:

I saw some beautiful TALL citrus at my local nursery and I stayed there and stared at them for over an hour! Then I realized I didn't have 59 dollars for one, so I left depressed...

Now, if they go on sale, that will be a different story.lol
