It's Thursday already! This has been a crazy week and I'm probably going to have tea with my mom today. She loves tea, too :)

Has anyone tried any new teas lately? While I love Earl Grey and sometimes Jasmine, I feel like something a little fruity lately. We used to get a really nice blackberry tea, but the shop moved and it's a lot further away now. Any wonderful teas that you've tried lately?

There are some nice places to buy teas on-line (so I've heard) but I haven't tried any. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I forgot all about Thursday Tea. :( It would have been a great break from my mulching. It's 6:30pm and if I drink tea (or coffee) now I'll be awake all night.

Haven't bought any different teas lately, usually stick to Lady Grey; but in the past I used to buy alot of Ceylon, English Breakfast and Earl Grey. I don't care a whole lot for fruity teas so can't recommend any. Twinings is the brand I buy the most. Come to think of it, they may have a berry tea. I'll have to Google.

Oh, I just googled Twinings and see Prince of Wales, I also always have a tin of that on hand too.

I watched Giada making this while I was riding my exercise bike a few weeks ago. It was very good. Though I eat meat I can go without it for days/weeks - this was a nice no meat meal. I used smoked Gouda instead of Mozarella and skipped the mushrooms since I'm not a big shroom fan. I also used whole grain pasta and skipped the butter and added salt to try to make it a little healthier. Baked Penne with Roasted Vegetables 2 red peppers, cored and cut into 1-inch wide strips 2 zucchini, quartered lengthwise and cut into 1-inch cubes 2 summer squash, quartered lengthwise and cut into 1-inch cubes 4 cremini mushrooms, halved 1 yellow onion, peeled and sliced into 1-inch strips 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon salt, divided 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided 1 tablespoon dried Italian herb mix or herbs de Provence 1 pound penne pasta 3 cups marinara sauce (store bought or homemade) 1 cup grated fontina cheese 1/2 cup grated smoked mozzarella 1 1/2 cups frozen peas, thawed 1/4 cup grated Parmesan, plus 1/3 cup for topping 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. On a baking sheet, toss the peppers, zucchini, squash, mushrooms, and onions with olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, and dried herbs. Roast until tender, about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook for about 6 minutes. Since you will be cooking the pasta a second time in the oven, you want to make sure the inside is still hard. Drain in a colander. In a large bowl, toss the drained pasta with the roasted vegetables, marinara sauce, cheeses, peas, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Using a wooden spoon, gently mix, until all the pasta is coated with the sauce and the ingredients are combined. Pour the pasta into a greased 9 by 13-inch pan. Just about ALL space heaters sold at the stores use 1500W of power, and any of them will certainly heat a room. Those that use less produce less heat of course. Those that use more produce more. It is physics. Do realize that running a 1500W appliance continuously is sucking a lot of energy. "The site here explains the three major types of heat." That site does not explain anything. It is ADVERTISING. It uses a lot of fluff words like amazing, superb, excellent, and the like. Then it goes on to carefully select words that sound like solid scientific data arranged to make this heater they sell sound like it is something new and different. Everything the ad says is carefully arranged and worded to be misleading when you read it. For instance they say that the unit "only" draws 1500W of power and reminds the reader that a 'simple coffee maker' uses 1500W of power, which is true, but you don't keep your coffee maker running 24 hours a day either, do you? A coffee maker only draws 1500W for about one or two minutes and then reduces power consumption to about 300W to keep the warmer on (if it has one - some don't), and even that is shut off after the coffee is gone. The write the ad to try to convince the reader that there is some brand new scientific hocus-pocus that they invented that they exclusively sell. What they are selling is a space heater that is no different than other ones you can pick up at the store for about $30. As, I said before, a space heater does have it's advantages in some situations like for zone heating. You can set your furnace thermostat for your house at say 40° or 50° so that your pipes don't freeze and your wallpaper does not peel off, and use the space heater in a room that you are using with the door closed to keep yourself comfortable. Using a space heater instead of baseboard heaters that are already installed in their home, like your neighbors do, is NOT going to save energy. You can't cheat physics. Alisande posted: "But they wanted me to pay $250 a month on the budget plan. I got them down to $188, but that still sounds outrageous to me." ☛☛☛I hope you realize what a budget plan means. If they calculated your average to be $250/mo and you are now paying $188/mo you will have a HUGE balloon payment at the end of your cycle. I hope you have the lump sum money set aside to pay it when you get your bill. Unless you have done something to reduce your usage from the last two years, (which is what they calculate the figure from), like get new windows or adding insulation, and know that your usage will be less, OR know that the price/rate of fuel has gone down in your area, (not likely), and the new figure is closer to what you will owe, you could be in a financial predicament at the end of the billing cycle. All a budget plan does is spread your payments over a period of time so that your bill does not fluctuate wildly, and you know what your monthly payments will be, ie; no 'surprises'. ☛☛☛ It is not a "discount" nor does it produce any "savings". You pay for what you use. Period.

As an herb, there are medicinal attributes. Here's what it says in Louise Tenney's book, "Today's Herbal Health". Catnip has been called nature's "Alka-Seltzer." The Indians used it for infant colic, but it also has a sedative effect on the nervous system. It is useful for many ailments" for all cases of fevers for its action in inducing sleep and in producing perspiration without increasing heat in the body. In children it is said to speedily overcome convulsions. It is also good for restlessness and colic and as a pain killer, especially for small children and infants. It has been known to help prevent a cold when drinking a warm infusion when you notice the first symptom. It helps in fatigue and improves circulation. It is said to help to prevent miscarriages and premature births. It helps in aches and pain due to flu and upset stomach and diarrhea associated with flu. Catnip is high in vitamins A and C, and the B-complex vitamins. It contains magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, sodium, and a trace of sulphur. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -I would caution using it on a regular basis since many herbals can cause liver toxins and even liver damage. I have an acquaintance who did herbal studies as a medical scientist this with a number of herbs and herbal blends on liver damage. -Dry it in the oven with the light on, between two layers of paper towels, rather than in the microwave if you don't have a dehydrator. Dry at a low temperature - 90-100°F. High-temp. drying will destroy many of the vitamins. -It is also suggested catnip be administered in the morning and evening. -If you take any Rx drugs or OTC medicines, check with a pharmacists for any possible drug interactions. -The tea is made from the dried leaves and flowering heads and is generally recognized as safe to use, plus it has a pleasant taste. There is one caution using it from a contemporary herbalist, Michael Moore. In general, "[catnip] may act to increase menstrual flow to varying degrees," so pregnant women should NOT use it. It can also cause spotting. -Harvesting: Gather the leaves and tops in late summer when the plant is in full bloom, and dry them carefully. Remove the tough stalks. Store in a dry place, away from light and heat. -If smoked, physicians have reported that catnip "was indeed mildly pshchoactive". -Culinary uses: as a salad ingredient -Catnip Tea: A standard beverage in England, where it is grown commercially, before the introduction of tea from China. To make catnip tea: Pour boiling water over the dried leaves/flowers and let it steep. Euell Gibbons [of the Grapenuts commercials fame decades ago] advised using a little more catnip per cup than you would ordinary tea. He also cautioned that catnip's flavor and aroma are very volatile, so he sat a saucer over his cup to "protect" his tea while it steeped. Euell Gibbons made candied catnip leaves to serve at the end of a meal, as a digestive aid or an after-dinner mint. His recipe calls for dipping catnip leaves into a mixture of beaten egg white and lemon juice. Then he sprinkled each side with sugar and let them dry for a day or so. Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. There are lots of sources for non-alcoholic substitutions, eld. AA has some, I think. My DH has 8 years sober and we were told at his rehab that we shouldn't count on the alcohol cooking off. Sometimes I have added grape juice (white or purple) and sometimes I just add more of the broth or liquid called for in the recipe. I still miss the red wine in recipes though and sherry in seafood dishes. Every now and then, I have fixed two separate recipes-with and without! Ha. thespruceeats gourmetsleuth I like the idea of adding a little vinegar to cut the sweetness of the grape juice when substituting for red wine.

I order from Upton Tea Imports and just received a new order. They have many teas to choose from and you can also get samples for about $1 to maybe $3. Enough to make about 2 cups. They offer many fruit teas as well as some organic teas. Their customer service is awesome too. One of the teas in my order is called Orange Spice and it is very good. I also love Twinnings, my fave is Darjeeling but I have seen some fruit teas by them at my local Super G.

I've also purchased teas from "Republic of Tea", tried their Earl Grey once and a green tea. The empty containers are so handy, not a tin box, but cylindrical. I keep my cinnamon and sugar mix in one.

My favorite tea is Madagascar Vanilla by Celestial Seasonings. Not new, but I could drink it day and night!

I didn't get a chance to have tea in the fairy gartden last week, with all that was going on at my mom's, but here's a picture of the fairy garden. I'll try to take more pictures this week...and actually set the table for tea :)

Oh! This is taken from a different angle than the one we see in "Discussions". This must be wonderful to look upon as you sip tea. It reminds me of a garden I created many years ago that I called my "Monet" garden. You make me wish I still had it or even....do it over again? Well, maybe I'll settle for watching yours grow and evolve.

Schoolhouse- Thank you! I think a Monet garden would be wonderful. What did you plant in your garden?

This would probably have made more sense, if I had posted it on the thread, where I talked about having tea in the fairy garden! (LOL) Oh well, you get the idea :)

As for new teas, everyone has such great suggestions! I need to try some new teas...it would be a fun thing to do with my mom. Maybe we'll do some tea shopping next weekend :)

My son loves teas. He is always trying new ones. His favorite place to order is from The Tea Butler...
They have some that come in sachets and are quite lovely in themselves.

Tomorrow I have to go to the library in town, on the way back I'm going to stop and browse the tins of tea at the shop. It is actually a wine and liquor store, but he has an aisle with an assortment of international and ethnic foods plus one wall of teas and preserves . I always have to check expiration dates on the tea, though.

I'll get new tins of "Prince of Wales", "Lady Grey" and try something different besides. The smaller packs of 8 tea bags each are a good way to experiment. Except there really isn't the wide selection he used to carry, he mentioned one time that it has become very expensive to buy because he has to buy so many tins at a time; and the tea doesn't move off the shelves as fast as it should.

Well, the "Lady Grey" tins had no expiration dates that I could read properly but I bought one. The "Prince of Wales" I bought is best used by 2012. I made a comment to the owner about expiration dates again, but he said "They just don't put them on do they?" Then he tried to convince me that the dates were only "shelf dates" and should not be sold after that. Well, I told him as he rang up a box of "Yorkshire Gold" tea bags that I gave a gift of this YG (purchased at his shop) to a friend one time and found out later it was nearly 2yrs. old! He said he doesn't understand the difference in taste really - oh brother. I answered it "Tastes like straw when old!" ha. he just smiled.

Anyway, my box of YG is good until November of 2010 - 40bags to a box - how will I ever drink all of those before November? If anyone wants to sample Yorkshire Gold send me your address and I'll slip several or more bags into an envelope! And I also bought a small box of 20 Lapsang Souchong tea bags to try again. It has such an exotic smokey flavor that I didn't want to buy an entire tin.

The shop owner also told me that Twinings is no longer going to offer the small packs of 6 bags. Have to buy boxes of 20bgs. in the future.
