Would you like some Jello with that Conifer, sir?

OK, one of you geniuses tell me what's going on -

Juiperus virginiana (Eastern Redcedar) trees all over my property have bright orange JELLO growing out of their trunks!! This happened overnight kids! Looks like some sort of alien invasion. What is it, and what (if anything) can I do about it? Thanks!

Now, after doing some thinking I am going to not be using a Horsfords dwarf. I need a little different needle structure as I was looking at its placement. It will be beside a pinus parviflora (not even sure of the name as I lost it) but I think it is Miyajima (10 or more years in only 2' by 1' with blue green needles. Anyway I want something different in needle structure beside it. I am needing something small again as I only have around 40" to work with in depth. I was thinking the picea orientalis Barnes. I have one and it has really done well here. I live in western Kansas which is a semi desert with heat and cold. Avg rain is under 20". I have created a different microclimate and have an irrigation system also, so most plants can survive for me. This area won't get more than 4-5 hours of direct sun but very bright light most of the time. Any ideas from all you experts would really be appreciated. Also, now that I am getting springs cleaning work done I tore out an old conifer that was getting a little scraggly. I am wanting something that is very low growing and will be placed in between two pines, Riverside gem and Jane Kluis. Again would anyone have any of your wonderful suggestions from the wealth of knowledge of seeing these things for all the years you have been growing them. I am the only person in my town of 5000 that grows dwarf conifers. In fact I bet you could find a handul of people in the whole half of western Kansas that even tries. I have a vast collection of them but am always wanting something new. I have had to tear out some in the last few years that have overgrown their area and I am going to fill that area in also. I am going to focus on the two areas in my back yard first though. I hope I have explained well enough and not confuse anyone so I can tap into that wealth of knowledge you all have. Thanks.

Hey all...sorry for abandoning this thread! Busy week... Your pics are just gorgeous. I've decided I'm becoming obsessed with conifers:) We pulled all the rocks from the left side...sooo much better! My dad is coming today and we are going to move the maple out a bit. It's about three feet away from the porch...not quite enough room... Haven't pulled the strip of grass from the garage area. The more I look at it, I think ya'll are correct there...it's kinda like a landing strip and looks a bit odd.. I'm hoping to head over to Gee farms...didn't even know about it until now. Looks like a Mecca for conifers...nice!! Thanks again...super helpful all!

Hi will, Thanks for the kind words. I love conifers and am still learning. I hope more people find out just how great they are and for the most part very low maintance. Also maybe once people see your garden in the westsound home and garden magazine they will like them even more. I know you are humble and wont brag about yourself so I will. Also thanks for your knowledge on cool conifer. I might call some of the great plants coming next years and Will's hot picks. I know I don't write on here very much but I do read the article always with a pen in hand to write down great plants. Thanks all for sharing and hope to see you if you are local or a conifer nerd.

Hi GreedyGhost I do find myself getting most of my info on Hoyas from clicking around site to site to site. I still don't feel like there is one site that I prefer or that is my go to. I personally would love more detailed information on the growing habits and the preferred conditions of specific Hoyas, so that when I acquire a new one I can get a really good idea of its proclivities, and really geek out on it. Perhaps the info out there on is more general since we all live in specifically different climates and provide growing conditions that are so varied? I guess thats why that David Liddle list of where hoyas are found in the wild is useful since it is a control and you just try to match the conditions the best you can- anyway, When I get a new Hoya I usually search its name on here and see what everyone says, It's the best resource I've found for more detailed info, but it's sort of a clunky apparatus, it would be amazing to have that type of in depth info and experience collected, boiled down and in one place. I would really like to learn more about the steps needed to acquire plants from overseas too. I am clueless about how to obtain the required paper work, or even if this is the the job of the nursery or the "importer"-me. And how this applies to ebay sellers from other countries. Also who are trusted purveyors that I should support and who should perhaps be avoided. I am also very interested in the background stories of the Big names in Hoyas, And would love to see more pictures of their collections. As well as the less big names and their collections. Re-reading your list above, I would appreciate more info on all you have listed! Are you thinking of making a web site? I have enjoyed all your funny and informative postings on here, I think it would be amazing if you made a site for Hoya people! -hannah

Nope, nothing on the foliage, just stuff sprouting out of the crevacies in the bark, as you see in the pics.

It must have rained the day/night before. This usually triggers this nasty response. Very common occurrence with Juiperus virginiana

Not the case.. It only comes from the apples that burst...probably just ran down the trunk.

Pick them off the tree before they ripen and burst. Of course if they are out of your reach you will have to devise some way to snag and pull them off.

Gymnosporangium (juniper rust). A fungal disease, fairly minor on junipers, but can be serious on the alternate hosts (apples, hawthorns, and related trees).

Looks like it's coming out of the trunks. Look Cedar-Apple Rust up to see if it comes out of the trunks, too. The naming refers to it infesting cedars (Junipers) and apple trees.

OK, looking this up, there are 3 different apple-cedar rusts. This one seems to fit the description, and does not form "apples". No cure, other than to destroy the tree (NOT!!) I don't grow any apples, but I LOVE my Redcedars.

"The symptoms of quince rust on red cedar and juniper
include perennial, elongated swellings on the branches,
which may crack and form cankers. In damp spring weather,
cushion-shaped, orange gelatinous blisters burst through
the bark of the branch swellings. Quince rust disease
damages the ornamental value of susceptible cedars and
junipers, killing young branches and weakening plants when
cankers occur on the main trunk."

The name is Dave and you know that. I have had Juniperus v. for 28 years so you don't have anything on me. I have a lot of them also. Never does this come out of the trunk at least on the ones I am growing. It's a result of the apples bursting and the Jello,as you call it, running out.

I never said you were blind maybe stupid though. I am surprised as smart as you claim to be that you would even bring up the Juniperus v. apple ceder rust issue. A no brainier.

Sorry I even responded and tried to help you. The last time I tried to help you by getting some information regarding a statue I was displaying in my garden. You requested that information.. I replied after going great lengths to secure that for you. You never said hi, by or kiss my behind. That tells me a lot about a person.

Go ahead an complain to GW...I could give a rats ass. No great loss.

It is actually Juniper-Hawthorn rust. It is a different species of Gymnosporangium that produces telia on the main stems.

It is Juniper-quince rust - G. clavipes.

Whoa Dave! Chill out. No offense meant.

And like salicaceae said, this appears to be Juniper-quince rust, which does not make the "apples" that Juniper-apples rust does. It pops out on the limbs and trunk just like in my pictures.

I tried to find out why I didn't respond to your info on the stone lantern and cannot even find the original e-mail you sent. Not sure what happened to it, but that's probably why you didn't get a response from me. I may have accidentally sent it to the spam folder, which I'm constatly trying to weed out of the good e-mails. I'm usually good about responding and saying "thanks" to people, but I guess I blew it this time. I do appreciate the fact that you found the information for me, and hope you'll forgive me for the belated gratitude and any other foot-in-mouth comments I've made today.
