Judging by your pic, it looks fine. I would check the roots. Many or a few? It may still be establishing and rooting out.

Same here it looks great. It would be still establishing roots it could take 4 maybe 5 months (Via the cooler season) before you would see new growth, but feel free to remove it and check for roots.

NO, I beg to differ. Pls. DON'T check the roots, cause that can disrupt or break the little roots that one is trying to get started growing.

It will root & it does look fine, it just needs the time, preferably undisturbed (assuming the mix is fine).

Yes, Pirate girl is right. I know it can be tempting to peek. Almost like Christmas morning when we were all little! I have done this to other plants, not just jades and it is detrimental to the cutting. You can set it back a long ways by peeking. Now when it comes to my jades, I do the same thing. I just wait for that new vegatative growth.

Good to know guys. I maybe should have specified that when I put it in that little pot, it already had a pretty good root structure. My friend potted the cutting in a really big pot of mostly peat based soil, which is how I got it. I pulled it out and put it in the small pot with the medium I described. So I know it has roots and it seems to appreciate the water (leaves firm up a bit after a watering).
Nevertheless, I'll assume that once the tiny leaves at the top start doing something, the plant has really acclimated to its surroundings.
Final quick question. Do you think the size of the pot is appropriate given the plant size? If I take another picture, I'll make sure I throw in something for perspective. The pot is only about 3 inches tall.

You are correct. Top-growth means that the Jade has enough roots to push new foliage.
The new foliage will, in turn, provide energy for the roots, which will then make more leaves...
and so on and so forth.

Another thing to consider is that your Jade will be grown 'hard' in a small container -
the mix will dry quickly and will warm and cool more readily than a larger container.
This combination will make for a slower-growing, more compact plant.

I had Jade cuttings in a similar mix in the same size terracotta pots and they barely grew at all.
Eventually, I un-potted them and changed the mix so that it was more moisture-retentive.
I think that I had originally erred on the side of caution - with a mix that was too gritty and open.

If you want that Jade to grow large, slip the whole root-mass into a larger container without disturbing
the roots. Now is a perfect time to do it.

Many thanks Josh. It's true that the water just runs right out of the pot. There's really very little in there that holds any water. I like the idea of putting it in a slightly larger pot.
Do you think it would be worthwhile to add a little C&S mix that might retain some more water? I could possibly introduce it to the new pot without messing up the root structure too much.

The same mix, but in greater volume, will hold more moisture and will help regulate temperature changes.
I'd stick with the current mix so that you're not introducing/changing too many variables at a time.

Any minor root-trauma will have callused in 3 - 5 days (approximately), so as long as you wait to water
the newly trans-potted plant, all should be well!

You are all so right. Many factors causes them to grow fact. Mine seem to like the Spring, and when it is time to root them just seem to drop the leaves to do so. I have never lost a "Jade" cutting, I let it callus over first before it even touches the soil. They are winter growers but first they must establish roots. Others here may do cuttings in a different way so don't discount their advise. It doesn't matter how it is done as long as they grow. Norma

I also let them callous over..I DO NOT check the roots to see if they are rooting..I just let nature take it's course and let the growth begin..

I have seen when many do this, pull the cutting out of the soil to see how they are doing, just to set them back from growing at a good speed. I use too before a certain individual suggested not to. I have seen a difference in growth and vitality...
I also think the location of your plants makes a huge difference in growth..Mine grow remarkably on a sunny window sill with the cooler temps at night near a window, and warm sun during the day, even in winter..

I have to echo Mike's comments. The advice here is really helpful. Josh, the suggestion about letting the roots callous over is a great one, I wouldn't have known that.
I put it in a slightly larger pot and while I know its just me, it seems like it's already happier. Here's a pic of the new pot.

How did you attempt to stat the cutting? Just curious why it took so long. Perhaps the wrong time of the year? but that doesn't seem right. Did you plant it directly into the soil? Norma

Norma, my friend grew it from a leaf in a really large pot of peat-based soil. He had several things growing in the pot already. It had grown up to the size you see in the first pic. Since he gave it to me with the entire pot, I immediately potted it in a small pot with a dry mix (the first photo you see above). That was back in August. I had it outside in partial sunlight until recently when we started getting some lows in the 30s.
I'm optimistic since the plant itself seems healthy. And it does seem like the tiny leaves at the top will eventually pop out some more.
