Stubborn potted blood orange refuses to flower!

It must just be doing this to spite me. Last fall I made sure to give it a chilling period in the attic to help it bloom. Nada! It's large enough and is in a spacious beautiful bone colored 5 gallon bucket, yet it does nothing, no blooms period! It's got full sun on our deck, yet it never blooms. I've had it for 5 years and it just sits there, if it had hands and feet they would be holding a beer and propped up on the coffetable watching TV. Is it waiting for the fall before it blooms or what? I'm considering throwing it off the deck to see if that wakes it up. It worked for some other plants around here.

Now we , well I know that has worked for your gardenias in years past!lol
You could even leave it in the woods for a while and promise to leave it there unless it does something!

Mary: Do you remember me? I have been so excited to see you back and expressed that in a few posts at the fragrance forums and I don't think you are seeing that unless of course you are ignoring me like your gardenias?

I seem to be the only one happy to see you back and I don't think you are seeing that. Well I am, just as happy to see you back as I was when my gardenia first flowered..lol

Can I ask you a few questions to pin this down?

That tree should be flowering like crazy. Be glad it is not a Moro Blood..lol

How many times do you fertilize it?
Is it grafted and or a cutting taken from a mature specimen that was flowering?
What does it look like? Is it very green?
How much sun does it get?
What fertilizer are you using?

Mary, it should flower even without the cool period on its own. I could be possible it might be getting too much Nitrogen pushing leaf growth.

This is a start....Please, don't throw it off the deck yet until we get this..lol

You always made me laugh and even more so when you finally got your gardenia to flower after my threats..lol

I have 2 Moro blood oranges. One was planted 5-6 years ago and grew like crazy quickly becoming 12-14 feet high but never blooming. Last year it finally had one orange but I never saw the bloom it came from. This year it is so loaded down I'm afraid it is going to break the tree down. The other was planted the year before last and that winter it froze and the top half died. I left it alone and it sprouted a new crown this year and quickly bloomed. It now has about 21 baseball sized oranges on it. I'm assuming it did this as a survival mechanism since the top was damaged but now it is a very healthy looking tree. I would give yours a little longer and see what happens.
I do have a few other questions in addition to Mike's.

1. Has it been growing/expanding every year?
2. What kind of soil medium is it in?
3. Have you pruned it any?
4. Can you post a picture?

My moro's have only bloomed in the spring unlike my other citrus which are on their third blooming flush this year.

I wonder if the excessive heat may be related to the lack of flowering. You say that the plant is well watered, but Citrus prefer to dry out a bit between waterings. Very hot conditions and continuously moist soil conditions are probably inhibiting flowering. Could you move it to a cooler exposure (eastern exposure as opposed to western, away from the radiant heat of the house--if it's next to the house, etc.)? Also, try misting the foliage more frequently--good for humidity and reducing temperatures. I understand the urge to drench with water when it's hot as blazes but hot plus wet sometimes results in stunted growth. If the plants are heat stressed, I also would resist the urge to feed until it gets cooler and you see some signs of growth. Good luck!

Hello Nick, I don't know if it eould be suitable or not for outdoor planting. I would think you would be okay if your temps didn't go below freezing or if they do if they only fall below slightly and for a short period of time you should be good to go. I know the redness of the fruit is dependent on cool temperatures while ripening. I am not sure if it is nightime coolness or not. I have a dwarf moro in a pot, and I know it is extremly sensitive to poor drainage and out of all the citrus I have right now, it is a light hog. It wants as much light possible and if it doesn't get it, it will start dying back. Andrew

Rhizo, It is in a plastic pot in regular potting soil at the moment because it was shipped to me with its roots in a bag with just a little dirt. I had to put it in something quickly so I used what was on hand. Luckily the pot is too small for it so it really guzzles the water so I am not having to worry about the soil staying too wet. It is going into a 16" clay pot with orchid bark, vermiculite and some regular potting soil very soon. I have only had the tree since February 15th of this year so I do not have it on a strict fertilizer routine yet.When I first got it I used vitamin B1 root starter transplant fertilizer since it had spent almost 5 days crossing the country to get here and was looking pretty ill. That really perked it up so I used it the next time I watered as well. Since then, I have been using miracle grow 20-20-20 around every 2-3 weeks but used 30-10-10 last week instead. It is kept in front of a southeast window but for the last two weeks it has been mainly outside with my other two citrus trees. Patty, Thanks for the encouragement. :-) I would like it to flower at some point but I do not want it to flower indoors when I bring it in this autumn (which is why I was hoping it may flower this summer.) I found out that me and some of my other family members are severely allergic to citrus blossoms when my clementine tree's flowers started to open. They make me and my other family members with asthma have asthma attacks. My mom, who doesn't even have asthma, starts to cough and wheeze when she smells them because the scent was so strong. :-/ ( I wish I would have known this before I ordered my trees. ) What I did to get rid of the flowers was I pulled most of the blossoms off, but left some of the ones that were about to open on the tree. I then removed the flower petals as well as the anthers and filaments from these remaining flowers. I also did this with my satsuma tree when it flowered as well. I just would hate to have to do this with my orange tree since it would be nice for us to have the tree flower outdoors where we could enjoy the flowers and still be able to breathe.

Did you plant it too deeply? That might be the number one issue I see when looking at tree or shrub problems. Also on that list is putting a bunch of compost or other amendment in the planting hole. I also wonder if your tree was rootbound when you planted it...which could result in encircling roots that can't enter the surrounding soil system. I guess you can tell that I am focusing on planting procedures, huh? In my experience, "operator error" is often the reason for all kinds of problems seen a long time down the road from the actual planting event. Other reasons might be with the actual physical site...drainage, soil texture, etc. You might evaluate your watering routine, too. Then there's always the JUST BECAUSE factor!

Hi MM! LOL, I had to do a search to find my own post, ha ha! Glad to be back as well, great to see you still alive and kicking! :D

My orange is doing okay, it's about 4 years old and is growing new leaves and the usual stuff citrus do. I did pee on it because of nitrogen deficiency and also gave it some iron because of the yellowing. I had bought it from logees years ago (when I still bought stuff from them, alas no more). I happened to see a new catalog from them where they advertised a 'new' blood orange where they say this 'new' one doesn't need chilling like some blood oranges do. I'm assuming they mean the one that I bought from them, lol!

I bought it from logees, so I'm guessing it is a grafted specimen and not a seedling. At least i sure hope not!

It gets full sun, but it's not as green as it should be. But it's getting there. :) I fertilize it with iron about 2 times a year. It did have a nirogen deficiency, but I'm correcting it.

What is bad about moro blood oranges? Maybe that's what I have, lol!!

To answer woodrok's questions, I haven't pruned it, it's been growing every year (sorry no pics yet, lol!), and it's in miracle gro soil.

At least I have some nice flower buds on my lemon tree finally. :)
