Early Christmas Gift

My good friend and I exchanged gifts today. She is one of my few friends that like plants. She got brug cuttings and I got a Weeping Bottlebrush tree. It is so cool! The flowers look just like the baby bottle cleaning brushes but they are hot pink! Too cool. Now I have to go look up how to care for it. I have never seen one here only on the coast so it may be another one to live in the garage for the winter, lol. Let us know what plants you get for Christmas.

Kristy that sounds beautiful, the best thing about the bottlebrush is that they are always covered with beautiful butterflies, and the humming birds love them. Mine seems to bloom all year, I think its because I put coffee grounds on them. My friend Linda has one that is at least 20 years old it is a hugh tree. She has hummingbirds in it all year long. In the winter she keeps her hummingbird feeders going. Its so strange to go to her house in January, and see the little guys flying around. Congratulations, on your wonderful Christmas gift. I will mail out your red riding hood, and peach brug. after Christmas, I just have been so busy, it seems I never have time to do the things I want to do. Barbra,

They're beautiful. I wish I could grow them here. I've tried in a container but it wasn't happy so I sent it to a friend in FL.

Hi There is a lot of info on the internet on Betas We only have one and when we first got it we had it in a 1 gallon fish bowl. The bowl needed to be changed every second day or it was filthy and it did not seem like it was 'happy'in there so after about a week or so I added it to our 20 gal tank. After a few days of hiding out, it is now thriving and actually playing with the other fish. Betas aren't necessarily solitary creatures, you just can't have 2 males together but you can have male and female and they are compatibable with other similar size fish. The main worry is actually the betas flowing fins being attacked by others not vice versa. The same problem occurs with angel fish - those fins are tempting. With our beta we have 1 angel fish, 4 black widow tetras and 4 mollies. They all get along great. Most, but not all info I have read discourages the small decorative containers for the fish. They can survive in them but they are not ideal. The beta would actually prefer higher temps than you can achieve without a tank heater as well as more space. Kind of like a lot of so called low light plants - they will survive in low light but they will thrive in more. I am not an expert - just wanted to offer a little info. Nice design with the feeder aside the house. This is something to keep in mind should I ever find the time to make some. Thanks for posting. Alex, true, they are close to the ground but I think they are for show/decoration more than for habitat. The feeder portion may work though.

I have three soups hand written at the top of my shopping list. (it's a simple spread sheet that has room top and bottom for notes) I just jot down what i'm thinking of making over the next weekend. Beef Barley - probably use a mix of grains, maybe some lentils. It is hearty but not quite a stew. Lots of broth for bread, biscuits or croutons. I add extra stock usually. It will thicken overnight. Freezes great. Make a killer top crust/or biscuit pot pie. Thai Coconut Chicken Curry - Also nice and rich but still brothy. I add a bit of tumeric and sweet paprika for color. Very much like a chowder. Not really a bread companion but we like it with thin rounds of toasted baguette. Potato Leek w/garlic and fennel - I use so much roasted garlic it should be called Garlic Soup. (less garlic for gifting). The fennel is some stalks i have frozen i just add while cooking and remove. I have leeks left over from T-day and lots of garlic. I like to use a few whole baby potatoes removed with some of the leeks/onions before stick blending some of the broth. One regular potato diced and half a sweet potato that get blended for some creaminess. Or i could use some squash/pumpkin from the freezer that i roasted a few weeks ago. I made versions of these with a chili and filled a friends freezer after she had her baby. It's a nice gift. If you google any suggestions, you will find many variations of the recipes. For example i just googled the curry to give me a quick reminder of the ingredients... i've never used fish sauce. I might add some shelled edamame. This Beef Barley is similar... Thanks Barbra, no rush. Don't tell my husband that about the coffee grounds. He thinks you can feed any plant your left over coffee and it doesn't need anything else, lol. I just looked up the bottlebrush and it says zone 9 so it may have to live in a large pot. The trunk is very pretty reminds me of a bonsai and the needlelike leaves would be pretty even without the flowers. I love anything that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. I don't know what I will do with it if it gets to 20 feet, lol. I hope its slow growing. I have a really big glazed ceramic pot with dragons on it that I think this will look very nice in til it gets too big. I was wanting a tree for it that was unusual so this was perfect. She is so happy with her brugs. I have been teaching her about them and she was telling her friend all about about them and how they had long curling tendrils that st the end of the petals and huge trumpet shaped flowers, lol. Now I have to take one to her friend tomorrow. I think she is getting hooked. Most of my neighbors already have one and several of my friends, the a/c repairman, some of my customers at the shop. I better hope all the ones I kept live. I have given away a most of the ones that I had 2 of already but I want one of every color and kind, lol. Gotta make room. I wish I would have had more to give for Christmas but am getting down to my only ones of most things so everyone else is going to have to wait til I can grow these out or get some extra cuttings again, lol. I plan to populate the town with brugs, lol.

A great looking bush/tall shrub. They grow here in So. Cali without fuss! Hummers luv them and they do add interest to the landscape. I have found some of ours here are subject to scale, but that may be because most of the time these are left to grow on their own and don't really get good care or grooming!!! Enjoy. It is a great gift. gloria
