I'd give it a dose of epsom salts, superthrive and if you have any kelp extract that as well. The following week I'd start fertilizing with a balanced feed once a week. Use that until you get some good growth then switch to a bloom booster. I'd continue with epsom salts 1x/mo and the kelp extract more often. If you have a foliar feed I'd use that every couple weeks as well. Brugs are such heavy feeders. Stop all feeding about a month before it's time to take them in for the winter. Karyn

Quiltingfox, Nice pic.. What part of louisiana are you in. I am in north La and i have been growing brugs for about 10-11 years and I leave a lot of mine in the ground, cut them back and toss a little mulch on them then forget them until spring. They come back bigger and better every year. But I do have a few that I have been scared to leave in the ground so I over winter them in my green house. But it is only the picky ones like some of the doubles and verigated ones. But this year I am going to leave them all in the ground to see what happen. I will root a few cuttings in my greenhouse just to be on the safe side. Good luck and remember Brugs are tougher than we give them credit for.. I use to baby mine when I first started growing them and would fret over every leaf.... They do so much better since I have stopped doing that. Kay

Hey fellow Californians! Like Iris said, there are more of us than I had though! That's great! I am also in the Central Valley (sunset zone 9, USDA zone 9b) near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada (yes, those mountains are covered in snow in the wintertime!). I leave my brugs outdoors in the ground. Even if frost gets the leaves, they are completely fine, they might look ugly, but I simply think of them as decidious trees. They grow their leaves back as soon as the weather warms up. My brugs are over 10 feet tall each with zero protection in the winter and minimal summer water. I can only immagine the proportions they would reach if protected in the winter and given plenty of water in the summer. I've even had several seedlings come up where some of my brugs have produced seed pods and they all have grown all on their own for over a year. I think I will probably pot them up this coming spring and give them away.

Karyn, I have mine beside a north window backing onto a bush. They do not get a lot of light. Neither do they grow much. Sometimes, they do flower for me though. They do get room temperature, and they tend to keep their leaves. My own thinking is that they don't like to be in the dark for 3 months like their one-toned comrades. Also I don't think they like the temperature to be as cold as their one-toned comrades tolerate. I trimmed the leaves of mine back,and let them grow new leaves suitable for their environment. I don't fertilize them at all, but do water on a regular basis. Personally, I think they make interesting house plants during the winter. I have not had trouble with mites on them at all, inside or outside. I think the fuzzier leaves has a lot to do with that.
