Brug Growing question for zone 8

This is my first year to grow brugs. I am in Louisiana zone 8 and will be overwintering my brugs outside in the ground. I need to know how to take care of this plant this winter. Do I need to cut it back before the first frost and if so how short/close to the ground should I cut it before mulching heavily? Appreciate your advice.

Hey there from Ga! Zone 8
I have some planted in the ground.
Cut them back before frost. 3-4 inches. I cover good with pine straw.
I don't do much watering in the winter.
Always root your cutting, trade them for other brugs or give them away for postage.
There is alot of people here that knows alot more than I do.
But I hope this helps a little.

Well the ones I had in the ground last winter...1st time...did not do to well. So I have this winter to do better.

But normally they should come back in that zone come spring

OH and WELCOME and hope you post many many more joyous messages or questions...whatever you need and feel like.

Melissa, broom is a pain in the neck. I used to love seeing it by the roadsides driving through the Italian landscape; so bright, so perfumed! But I think that is the only good context for it, in a way. It would be OK where it is on my property, if it didn't attract those effing beetles so wildly; in fact, IMO, the beetles exist precisely to keep the broom from taking over the entire world, since they suck the flowers and render them infertile. But the beetles are engineered to be wildly attracted to the colour yelow; that is, the stamens of ALL flowers,and due to the geography (or morphology???) of my land (sharply sloping down from the rose garden into the broom field and below that, oak woods,with a south-west orientation),having broom down there is like rolling out the red carpet for the beetles (well, the yellow carpet). Broom has strong, fibrous tap roots that can push their way through/ between rocks, etc. I think the only way I can do anything with this area is by hacking up the ground with my pick; I can't see just planting baby trees amongst that thuggish broom and hoping them to survive.Also, I'd have to water the babies in their first year, and I think the broom would just flourish all the more. Probably I'll try a mix of things and see what works best,but it will be necessary to work the soil before I plant anything. I probably should saw down all the broom in the area I wish to start cultivating, and maybe put black plastic bags over the stumps of the ones that are too deep rooted to dig up; for shade it might be better to rig up something artificial. I don't think your land was as abused as mine was; this area in question has been so badly eroded; I have to hunt out spots where it will be possible to dig down deep enough to start stuff. The rose garden area was similar when I started about 15 years ago,but I am not going to lug all this heavy clay, etc. all the way down there. To plant the first Leylandii I prepared an area,digging out rocks, putting in organic matter and kitty litter, etc. I'll certainly be watering it in it's first year at least! but the thing about Leylandii is that it was cheap; it's as tall as me and cost me all of 13 euros. So, if with some effort I can get it to establish,I might have a nice start.The thing is, even on the subject of drought resistance, people's experiences and opinions vary greatly with ALL plants, as far as I can see. To me,for example, roses are very drought-resistant once established, but many, many people heartily disagree with this opinion. So I will see what this Leylandii does before I make any decisions. Criteria for a nurse crop would have to be : economic ,(not to say, cheap) and fast-growing. But even for that, I will absolutely have to work on that soil ; as it is now, nothing new can start growing there, I think,except baby broom and maybe brambles (if they manage to compete with the broom)...bart

Anitaathome: I live in Illinois. Humid in the summer, the kind of "make you wanna fall down and not get up" humid. Temps range from upper 80s to upper 90s on various days in the summer - with humidity at the 80-85%. Like you're gonna become a fish and breathe water. (grin) I have found here in Illinois, they pout in full all day sun. The NOID yellows will take it up until about 3:00 and then just droop. Leaves lay down along the trunks. The others - the smaller bush pinks - they take it a little longer, but not much. Afternoon shade is best for mine. I'll try to push until 2:00 but the far sun track - I'm going to put really sun hardy stuff down, like Calibrachoa, dats, etc. They just can't take that brutal heat/humidity and sun. I'm hoping they'll be a little more sun tolerant this year in the ground - and I won't run them that far out into that sun track - I'll keep them a little closer to the house so they get shaded sooner.

And I really appreciate you confirming that Kartuz is a reliable grower, cuz that was just a shot in the dark. And I also appreciate knowing about the eBay grower/venders. Someone else mentioned them in this thread but I thought they were folks from this forum. So now I know they are eBayers. Well any addict will tell ya...always good to have sources...day or night. Hi Daniella (or is it Daniel?)! Maybe we should start a 12 step program for pre-brugs. However your enthusiasm is dangerously contagious and it might backfire. And yes we are all one...and I'm sure to become color blind. Speaking of enthusiasm... I went to the nursery today and the woman attendant led me through a maze of plants in the greenhouse and finally stopped at the one brug plant which apparently was left like an orphan to fend off the winter alone. I was still on a brug high from my conversations in this forum and was speaking about them in hushed, breathless tones of awe. The attendent seemed perplexed at all the fuss. I asked when they were planning to get more in and she said it was not really on their plant list, but they sometimes took them when growers had them available. She said they weren't big money makers for growers. I must have gasped because she raised her eyebrows and began backing away. I'm guessing she thought I was one of those folks who claimed to see the image of Mother Mary in a leaf or cracker....as my reverence for this mere 'plant' seemed vastly disproportionate to her own borderline disinterest. I have a large garden on my property that is never dry, and sometimes if we have rain for several days in a row it's downright gushy. I've been trying various plants in it that supposedly like moist soil for 5 years and most of them don't make it. The soil is clay but has been amended continuously. This garden gets sun in mid-morning and through afternoon, depending on the time of year. So far, Japanese forest grass does very well and a Turtlehead is surviving this year. I have read that EE's like wet soil, so I'd like to try some. I will plant 7 (or maybe I'll start with 3 and see how it goes). The middle one will be the tallest (5' or so would look nice) with the rest getting gradually shorter, and that's one of my questions--can anyone suggest EEs that grow to about 5' and some others that grow to 4' and 3'? My other question is should I buy them already growing in pots this fall, take them out of the pots and plant them in the ground, or leave them in their pots and put those pots in the ground? Oh, also, is fall a good time to plant a growing EE or should I wait until spring and plant them as bulbs?

Thank you Dorothy and Lucy. Maybe will try to trade some unrooted cuttings later this fall. Mine are just starting to bloom now. I don't know the name of them, but are about 3 to 4 ft tall and have blooms that look yellow on the outside and then as the bloom unfolds the yellow fades away and the bloom is a very pale peachy pink color. :-)

Hey Sandra, I just realized yours are pretty small. You may not get many cuttings this year. Dont worry about sending me one. Not that I dont like it, I do, but there are many here with more popular and named varieties that you could trade your cuttings for. Maybe you can get me next year. I will still be happy to send you a cutting this fall or winter. Send me your address and I will send you a cutting as soon as I take them.I will send you an email now so you have mine

Quiltingfox, Nice pic.. What part of louisiana are you in. I am in north La and i have been growing brugs for about 10-11 years and I leave a lot of mine in the ground, cut them back and toss a little mulch on them then forget them until spring. They come back bigger and better every year. But I do have a few that I have been scared to leave in the ground so I over winter them in my green house. But it is only the picky ones like some of the doubles and verigated ones. But this year I am going to leave them all in the ground to see what happen. I will root a few cuttings in my greenhouse just to be on the safe side.

Good luck and remember Brugs are tougher than we give them credit for.. I use to baby mine when I first started growing them and would fret over every leaf.... They do so much better since I have stopped doing that.

Grannyof9 I am in central Louisiana, so very nice to meet you. Hi Rosepedal good to see you here too. :-) Thank you everyone for your helpfulness and making me feel welcome.

The 2 brugs that I have I started from rooted cuttings that came from California earlier this summer. I have some brug seeds - how long does it take to grow brugs from seed? Do you wintersow them or wait till it is warm weather?

Hi Sandra...

That is funny you mentioned that...I had sowed some seeds a couple months back from Gary Morales a great hyb person here and in the brug world..Well they didnt come up so I threw them outside...They popped up! I am so happy :) His plants are amazing!

Okay to get started I am fairly new so oldies correct me if I am wrong....

I soak the seed in water and peroxide just a little bit for 24 hours.....

I than peel the coat carefully away from the seed..Be careful they are slippery seeds...

I than sow in Miracle soil and perilite mixture.. They need fast draining soil.... Than I place outside right now...Optimal growing conditions for brug seeds.... Dont plant too deep... Just cover them babies...Let us know how they do...Some come up fast and others dont....Good luck Sandra sure is nice seeing you...Barb
