I was thinking that, if I had to wear these shoes (and, frankly, there are times that all of just might have to, to save civilization or something similarly interesting), I'd need cargo pants to carry all of the compliments I'd get on them.

No, none of us in this domicile would wear those. Yes, have a friend who will with joy, if not with dress sense. She also has a love of zebra, but that's a soft horror show better written about another time.

You see the plants will need some further rearranging - I plan to move all of the deciduous plants to one area, particularly the Cyphostemmas, some leaves of which are ready for removal and placement into the compost bowl.

I know for a fact there is someone in my family that would kill for those shoes. I've been known to do the zebra thing. I love how your plants have all those windows for the sunshine.mine are all crammed into a window here ,there,wherever the sun is. No wonder yours look so good.

Hello, I haven't had any problems associated with the questions being asked me. No fish taste on my blueberries, in fact extra huge and planted in the ground, nor any of my tomatos or any vegi's for that matter... I have friends that eat my citrus fruit, that rave on how tsasty they are, but or course they do not eat the rind. I have use it on my peaches and pears up to a the day of harvest on my rasberries and nothing. I just rinse off the fruit, although none that had a fish taste that I didn't rinse either As for spraying them, the dosage I use is what is set to come out of my MG jug. I always water very early in the am, then come back a coupe of our later when i am home, and spray all my plants with water again...If I do not respray, I still have no burn, because when ever I spray any kind of fertilizer, organic or chemical, and or pest sprays, it is always done hours before or after the heat of the full day sun..Not sure if the emulsion makes a diiference on my plants, but it is pure and cold pressed, a proccess that Neptune's Harvest brags is better than any other fish product... Just a habit I guess spraying hours from the heat of the sun with anything but just water... Buylady, I do not know a thing about Superthrive. Tony does and she might be able to shed some light on this.. I hope everyone is having a great summer thus far, but I think I am about to enter into a drought period...Oh boy! Buylady, I am so happy your plants are finally outdoors! maybe the good bugs will attack the bad ones, as long as you stay with natural pesticides...Focus on ridding the pests and your soil mix, and your plants will never look as good as you could ever imagine in such a short period of time.. Thanks, everyone, for the great advice. Since I could not find a Turface retailer nearby, and since I did not want to wait (call me impatient), I went to the local NAPA store and bought 25 lbs. of Floor Dry #8822. Cost less than 10 bucks, which is cheaper than dirt. Literally, if you compare to bagged potting soil. Tried out the new mix on a few plants. It's around 50% Floor Dry, 20% gravel, 20% perlite, 10% potting soil. I removed the chicken grit, because mine is for chicks and is the smaller size. Didn't think it helped (but it is nice for rooting cuttings). Here's a pic of my Sarcocaulon herrei in the new mix. I actually liked the look of the mix so much (more natural, if I can say that about a potted plant) that I did not top dress with gravel. I know there are still more fines in there than some would recommend, but I think that, overall, it is a big step up from what I was using. Drains like a Shih Tzu through a goose. Unless I run into issues, I'll probably wait to repot everyone else until they go outside in late spring. Or, if I get snowed in for a weekend and feel the need to get my hands into some dirt. Greendream, commercially manufactured horticultural oils ARE absolutely safe, when used according to the directions on the label. These products are produced in such a manner that they do their job against the pests, but still allow the plant to breathe. "All natural " is not better when it comes to oils intended for plant use. We do not have the ability to create something completely water soluble and breathable at home. Kitchen concoctions can be gloppy, unmeasurable, and sticky. Very harmful to plant leaves. The commercial products are so light that, once dry, they are barely discernible on a plant's surface. Simply follow the label directions for mixing and the warnings about the temperature guidelines and you'll be good to go. People get into trouble when 1) they mix their own goop or 2) don't read, understand, and follow the directions on the label. That's the real scoop.

I am seeing this thread for the first time, and while I did not read the whole thing I am wondering if the original question was really addressed. The original poster is talking about situations where the root zone is far away from the perched water table. Instead of addressing that specific issue, somehow this thread got directed to the question of whether perched water table matters at all (clearly it does). Let's consider a specific example. Say I have an oil vase that is four feet high. I fill that will 511. Then I plant shallow rooted plants in that oil vase, so those roots are about 3.5 feet away from the bottom of the pot. In this post, a user makes the point that you want the root zone to have less than 5 kPa of pressure/tension in order to be able to take water out of the soil and nourish the roots. I do not understand this issue well, but using the data in that post (i.e., 1 kPa = 3.94 inches for a particular soil mix), that seems to imply that this soil mix would get to 5 kPa at about 20 inches of height from the top of the perched water table. You would get to 5 kPa at: 3.94 in/kPa * 5 kPa = 19.7 in ~= 20 in. That might imply that you want to keep the bottom of your root zone within 20 inches of the top of the PWT, otherwise the roots might have problems getting the best extraction of water out of the soil, in the days after watering. So back to the original question that was posted, it seems to me that there might be value in looking at the root behavior of what you are planting, and the size of the pot, and you might want to keep the bottom of your roots within an appropriate distance from the top of the PWT, in order to give the roots an easier time in extracting water out of the soil. That's way more complexity than most of us are willing to deal with, and I am sure there is a lot of science and practical understanding that I do not have on this issue. But maybe it is not a good idea to put a shallow rooted plant into a very deep container.

Say it isn't so, Christopher, that you've been spending so much time at the Orchid Forum that you don't recognize your good ol' Crassula ovata, and it's going to plank in the pot, as it were. It was a plant which I removed all the leaves and the rootball, because it didn't fit into the thrift-store bonsai pot (made in Japan!) which I wanted to grow it in.

Le Upright (y) is Tylecodon (definitely) paniculata (? - likely, per Tom, and the leaves will be big, well, big for Tylecodons).

I'd very much like to trade some plants - I can send you a list of the extra stuff, and, for that special trade, would even try to root a Tylecodon stump for you.
