Trish, the NW experienced an unusually dry summer followed by a very wet and blustery winter. Without a closer examination, I'd guess your armandii was experiencing some drought stress going into fall and winter. Stressed evergreens of any kind are much more vulnerable to winter damage than those that are perfectly healthy. The numerous windstorms and sharp cold spells we had are likely contributing to the brown and dead growth you see now - armandiis do not like exposed sites and heavy winds. Mine and others in the area are on the verge of flowering right now and immediately after flowering is the best time to cut these back. Wait until the middle part of next month and cut back hard. Fertilize with rose or tomato fertilizer and pay close attention to the watering during the summer. A liberal organic mulch of compost at the base will help to retain soil moisture. If all is well, it should resprout and grow rapidly. Armandiis are vulnerable to a (suspected) virus that is similar in form to anthracnose. If you see a repeat of the same symptoms after providing the above care, you may want to consider replacing it.

Where are you located? Clematis armandii is typically recommended as a shade loving clematis, as it thrives and blooms beautifully in a fair amount of shade......more than most other varieties. And while it can also be grown in sun, how much sun would depend on specific location. Full sun in my very northerly, mild summer area is fine - full sun in the southeast not so fine. In it's native habitat, it is a forest understory plant, receiving minimal direct sunlight. New growth is often tinged with red and the sun exposure may be intensifying that. Is the second photo of a second plant? If so, that one is in deep trouble and will probably not survive. This is not the easiest of clems to get established so selecting the best possible location and preparing the best possible planting hole and treating with kid gloves for a season or two is highly recommended.

There's a tendency to be hardy to somewhere around 15 degrees F. Also it being a clematis is should be planted in good soil that does not get hot around the base of the plant. And this is a vigorous, rather large growing climber that throws out bursts of long shoots growing increments of feet, if not yards all at once - a hospital in my area has a multi-story building with an open frame on one side, which evergreen clematis has climbed pretty much all the way to the top. Otherwise when planted on too small of a support, not kept diligently pruned and trained into an open fan shape it soon forms a tangled mound of shoots and leaves, with persistent old dead leaves visible underneath.
