i would not expect picea abies to root ...

i would suggest.. since grafting season is right now.. that you get some scion to a professional ... on your side of the world ... i can think of two in the Netherlands ... and i know they know a couple in germany ... lets see if your post gets some interest in that regard ....

yours is very similar to picea glauca dent in coloration ...

but i see none of the winter burn that that plant gets ... which is very good ...

Ken Adrian: The problem is that i can't climb the tree... It's grove is open to the public, but on private ground, the mother tree is about 80- 100 years old and as i say, all the live is on the top few meters, 20 m off the ground.

The only chance of getting scions is to cut off the tree, or to patiently wait if squirrels, storm or snow rip some twigs of...
Unfortunately in none of the years since 2010 similar strong shoots had fallen down, only some of the weeping, older side twigs, and they are really tricky to graft, only 3 to 4 mm thick and absolutely soft and pliant.

In 2012 two out of three graftings had done it, one of these is still alive, the other one was trampled down by cats or playing martens...
2013' grafts brought no success (4 trials), and the first ones in this winter was the four i have grafted recently (we got only two or three stronger storms this winter, none was able to break some scions, and nearly no snow, one day and a half all in all here in our region)...

Three of the freshly done graftings are with really big white quantities and one is with very less white, but the buds are vigorous, and if this one makes it, i hope it develops more white in the future.

The next similar variety to my find would be P. abies "Pendula Variegata", i think, which i has seen the first time here in this outstanding forum :).

Best way to get high altitude scions would be shooting with shotgun, but i understand that is not an option in this case.

It may sound little funny but it is also possible to fish scions with rod and reel and wery strong line. I have done this once and got some scionwood down. I had wery heavy lures used when deep sea fishing in norway. It is really important to have ultrastrong line becauce you have to pull the lure off the tree with some material attached to it.

Sounds like a good way to lose an eye! ;(

Yeah, safety aspects are good to keep in mind... But i would quess that itôs safer to risk losing an eye than climbing up there and risk losing whole body :D

Nice variegation.
Why not try a child's bow and arrow set. Shoot fishing line over the broom, attach stronger line to pull up into the broom with a survival cable for cutting branches and then more of the stronger line. Then you could saw off a section of the broom. It would be quiet and safe.

It is'nt all that easy. I had the idea with bow and arrow too, or to throw a stone on a line, but it is all useless, because the variegated one is the third tree in a row of 6 relatively old normal specimens, which are much bigger and stronger than the variegated one... And to the left and the right grow two more tree rows, and all of them, including the variegated one, have dead branches up nearly the whole trunk (with exception of the lower 6 m of the trunks)...
Between the single trees is more space than usual in a agricultural used forest, but sadly not enough. Well, i hope the grafting from 2012 is now established, well rooted in the bed and do more than 3 " of growth this year, so i can use it as soon as possible as a mother plant too...

It was me who posted the photos here of the Picea abies 'Pendula Variegata'.

Did you take those scions for grafting at the shady side of the tree?
I guess the white needles will burn will they're exposed in full sun...
