Sorry, I don't happen to think it's worthwhile & I have abt 8 or 10 Aloes (a couple not IDed), 1/2 dozen each Haworthias & Gasterias (most no ID).

I think you don't see much out there for this, 'cause there's not that much interest, if there were, don't you think there'd be groups already?

The couple or 3 people here that were really into Aloes seem long-gone. I think 1 or 2 of them are at the 'other site' & the other seems to have vanished altogether. At least that's what I've noticed.

Well, considering how many members there are on Yahoo, from all over the world I find it hard to believe! I just hate the way Yahoo works!

The only reasons they have defected is because 1: their photos can be posted for posterity. 2: One told me she is glad that the new "pay for play" removes many 'Why does my cacti die in the shade garden? questions'-not snobbery,they just don't want to wade through what they have known for years-decades!
They check back here now and then..
The only pure Aloe collectors tend to be all in Southern California. I also think that Cacti and Aloe go better in a forum than say,Palms and Cycads. Fewer still cycad specialists.

Stan,what do you mean by pay for play? This is free! And to say the only Aloe collectors are in S.Ca is so off the mark! What about the rest of the world? I agree about Cycads tho,they're closer to Ferns which share a forum with Fungi,oh they're really close! ;)

I know why they left, I had reasons other than the fee for staying, & since I don't post pix (no camera), I don't run that risk either.

I just didn't think there'd be much interest to sustain an Aloe (& its relatives) Forum, witness the Sans. forum here; very slow & rarely active except by a very few.

Am I going somewhere?

Better to keep Aloes here among the rest of the succulents.

All this rain the last few days have sent all my Aloes into a growing spurt!

I don't have any cacti, but I have Agave Tequilana, Aloe Principis, Aloe Vera, Crosby's Prolific & Walmsley's Blue, so I say.......why not???

Hard to argue with that when most can only keep somewhat small specimens alive in pots.. No offense - but Aloes are one of those plants that really need to be planted in the ground to do their thing. They are great to look at and ponder when in pots, but are really just a fraction of their real self compared to being planted in the ground. I would prefer Aloes to be discussed right here -

GreenLarry,The "other"(D.G.) sites C&S forums are what I was talking about.
I find here in the bay area Aloes and Euphorbia cactiforms are much easier to grow than the America's cacti. They handle the more rain and less light levels of the urban and suburban yards much better here.
My point is -cacti are better known as plants to the public.But to most succulent growers they are not as popular any longer as the world of Aloes and Euphorbias. Even the botanical gardens have shifted to the A&E's over the C&S's, Seems to me.
It would be more accurate to now call this a Succulents and a few cacti forum....

Wow, talk about ethnocentric! I bet there are gardeners in South Africa who'd take exception!
It is an international Forum, after all, and many parts of the world have climates favorable to growing Aloes in ground. While it's easier, and requires less work/skill to grow large specimen plants in those areas, that doesn't mean they're the only place to grow impressive Aloes, nor the only places where decent growers/collectors exist. (Not sure what qualifies a grower as "pure" -- lol! Maybe you mean collector of pure species as opposed to hybrids.) Ever look at Cok & Ine Grootscholten's albums? They have a darned nice collection, and in a cool damp country that's closer to the Artic Circle that it is to So. Cal's latitude. There might not be a lot of statuesque tree Aloes, but with all those colorful beauties, most people wouldn't miss the giants!
...and by the way, there are myriad Aloes that have a mature size of a couple feet or less, well-suited to reach their full potential in pot culture. If you folks like the big ones, and you have the space and climate to grow them outdoors, good for you! Personally, I'd pick a nice little potted A. melanacantha over a thicket of A. ciliaris any day. It's a bit short-sighted to think the only "pure" Aloe collectors are folks who grow the plants you like the way you like. If you want to share some photos of it done your way though, folks, I'm sure the rest of us would thoroughly enjoy them. They might help get Larry Aloe-sated, too!
