Gymnocalycium -- Water or not?

I'll try and get pictures when my internet stops being unusably slow.
One of the two unidentified gymnocalyciums I got at IKEA this summer is looking kind of deflated around the base/mid-section. Usually I'd take that as a sign of needing watered, but... I'm not sure if this is shrinking from needing water or shrinking from some sort of seasonal... shrinkage. And I'm not really in the mood to hazard a guess and rot it out.
So, should I water it, or is this just a sign of winter dormancy?
