hello, everyone!

I wanted to share with you all some photos sent to me by my dear friend jeri at botanical paradise in south florida.

i am constantly telling jeri how fortunate she is to be able to step out back and see over 140 stock-size plants!

blooms everywhere!! and it's december, for heavens sake!..

how lucky can you get?

jeri is a smart cookie and a hard worker. she's busy hybridizing and has some very interesting crosses she's working on. best yet, i get first pick of the new seeds

and it's going to be so hard to choose!

i just hope i can keep it under 500!!!i don't want to seem greedy! i'll be tempted to keep all of the confusion crosses for myself,she has lots of kongmansia crosses, lots of double yellows and pinks. just too many to choose from!

i haven't seen the brugs that we transplanted inland at the ranch since we put them in 2 months ago, but jeri tells me they are all doing well. Every one is over 5'! on my next trip down, we'll go out to check on them. you should see us out in the field, me and my boots covered in dirt and jeri dressed to the nines and tiptoeing through in her gucci pumps, hoping to get back to the caddie unsoiled! lol lol lol

LOL I bet that is a sight. I love Angels Exotic. Its a really pretty girl And thanks for the pictures. I keep checking to see what you have new because I always know it will be something that makes me smile. Brandy

Beautiful pictures. I'm tickled pink to have a Frosty Pink blooming now in the GH.
I would be in heaven walking around the fields like that!

That seed site is a really good link for you! Once you start collecting for awhile you kind of learn your way around and you'll find it much easier to identify seeds. There is a great big group that form pods and the hardest part on those is waiting for the pod to ripen. (Snaps, delphiniums, nicotiana, bellflowers come to mind). You'll notice that you start watching your flowers die and you keep on checking where the spent flower is to see what develops. Sometimes, in your early years, you can't wait for the flower to die to get the seeds hahaha. If you notice, the pods will go green, then start to brown up but still will be soft. You have to wait until they get crumbly before you pluck them or your seeds won't be ready. If have a lot of pods on a plant, you can pluck one pod to open and examine the contents. You see how the plant progresses to seed. When they are all white and mushy, they aren't ready. Another big group are the daisy type flowers (shasta, helenium, rudbeckia). On those, you don't get a pod so you have to wait until all the petals are spent. When it's good and dry you can run your finger over the top and the seeds fall right out. The Coneflowers sort of fall into this catagory but they have a built in ouch-factor. All of those spikes (that poke your fingers) are not the seed. Almost everyone new makes the mistake on these! I let the seedheads dry completely in their bags on these babies before attempting to get the seeds. I take my thumbs (you can wear thumb-protectors like those rubber fingers lol) and grab them in the middle and pull it apart. You'll see off-white (almost grey) seeds fall out. They are rather large so you can spot them easily. I left most of them on the plants this year to completely dry but the finches made a breakfast out of them! No, the chaff doesn't make a difference for me if I plant it. If you think about flowers growing in nature, no one is there to pluck the seeds out. I crumble it up into a finer powder with my fingers and sprinkle it so I know the seed touched down on my soil. If I'm trading, I try to do a better job with the chaff. I do the group swaps so I don't know who's getting the seed. I know some traders stress a little over the chaff and I'd hate to ruin someone's day :) There are things that you just can't help to send chaff with. I send the whole flower part out on the astibles and I get them in trade that way, too. I can't overwinter butterfly bush but that's another one I've gotten the whole flower part in trade. I graduated to the big daddy seed box a few years ago and it was truly the best investment for my seed collecting hobby. It's like Julie's plastic one on wheels but it has 6 drawers. I found it at Office Max for around $30. The top 2 drawers have my baggies and stuff in them and the rest are seed folders. Those priority mailers cut in half length wise fit perfectly. I do them in alpha order also. Everything I collect each year has it's own folder so I don't have to keep remaking them. I just add to it when I get more. If you pre-make your trade bags, they fit right in so it keeps you organized. I have a generic "A, "B" etc. folder also so when I get a big trade in I can file it right away. I'm really trying to get everything with their full names on them, after so many years I've forgotten what is what. So that's a warning for you that you forget! I started putting the info right on the folder as I collect it so it's there when I want to send it to someone. I also did a lot of on-line orders so I copied the info down so I'll always have it. It's so very hard to keep all of this straight until you find a system that works for you! If you find you end up falling into the obsessive-compulsive seed collecting hobby, like so many of us :) think up some methods that will keep you more organized. People have some great systems so if you keep reading you'll pick up on some ideas that will work great for you. Some people are very content with being unorganized, too! It all just boils down to having a pretty garden :) ..and a cute cat!

Hello Gourdglutton! I have packets containing 5 seeds [shiny black] of Cucurbita ficifolia [Shark Fin Melon or chilacayote]. This is an interesting plant [you will need long-day circumstances for good growing results]. The melon is medicinal for diabetics. I would have an interest in a trade for some of your offered seeds of bottle gourd seeds, mini bottle gourd seeds, blue pumpkin seeds or Minnesota miniature melon seeds. You'll need to search the web based on the exact species you are attempting to grow. All seeds are different. Your question is like asking how do you eat food? You don't eat a bowl of soup the same way as you'd eat a sirloin steak. Likewise, the method for propagating Copperpod - Peltophorum pterocarpum - is radically different from starting a Spindle Palm.

Wow Eddie those are all beautiful! I love the wild tendrils on dbl lamoure. I see that rosalla looks like it has another skirt in there, I've been reading other posts with people who were surprised to see rosalla throwing doubles.

Eddie here you go again. Teasing us lol. WOW you are such a lucky guy. What more do you wish for in 2009? I mean 500 plus seeds. HOpe there will be lots of special seedlings growing out for you.

Beautiful photos of your brugs. I can not wait for spring to see my plants bloom. Angel's Exotic is stunning. I love the two very distinct skirts.

angels exotic is becoming one of my favorate . this brug starts blooming around 3 ft . it fluses around every 3-4 weeks , each time getting more and more blooms . its definately a show .

Jeri has gorgeous plants..she is who I got my first Dat seeds from that got me into this whole brug obsession, lol. As well as a few other plants..

jeri says rosalla blooms semi doubles so far . will continue to watch .

bob , she says its a date . not sure when my next trip will be . it may actually be this week coming . i'm hoping to get annual cuttings and succulent cuttings . jeri has redbird euphorbia and pencil cacti for me . i hope to find some large leaf succulents .

lucy, i never push my luck to the limit . i'm just happy that god gave me such beautiful brug seedlings . i'm just a care taker !!! in my prayers i told him no one deserved them more than me .lol lol so send striped brugs and make sure the base color is purple . lol i will not be too upset if the stripes are out of order .lol lol i hope the big guys doesn't read this post .lol lol

daniella, she still has seeds . this summer i grow out over 22 datura for her . i really like them , easy care and blooms allot . the purples really catch the local gardeners eye.

I'm with you Eddie ! Every time I walk out in the garden or into the greenhouse I thank God for the beauty he has created. I feel so blessed to be able to grow these plants.
