Cacti & Succulents

What kind of succulents are these?

I was given them by a buddy of mine and they are doing fine (well they are growing and look good to my ignorant eye). Not sure what they are or what their specific needs are. I know about the light hungry/cone head thimble cacti's, should probably pitch them but I cant bring myself to do it! :)

Looks to me probably like Echeveria 'Perle Von Nurnberg' at the far right. All these guys need out of that very peaty-looking soil and into something well-draining, so I'd do some searches on here on soil mixes.

Thank you for the info. What would be a good draining soil? The pot they are in has holes in the bottom and actually I would say the soil drains very well. Its a mix of cacti&succulent potting soil/akadama (bonsai substrate)/ADA aquasoil (aquatic plant substrate for submersed plants in aquariums).

scapergirl In your climate/growing zone, most could probably take full sun (Neil is in much warmer climate). BUT - they need to be acclimatized to it. Start with dappled shade, and move every few days into more and more sunlight. Sunburn happens to any plant if put in strong/direct sun suddenly. You don't have to use bark in your mix - I gave up since it is very difficult to get around here. Large bark yes, but not small that would be good for 'classic' gritty mix. OTH, since you grow orchids, you for sure have bark? I use mix of approx. equal pts of sifted perlite (would use pumice if it was readily available) and chicken grit. To that, I add about 10-15% of turface. This mix drains ver well, and since all my succulents spend Summers outdoors, I do not worry about them being rained on. Ingredients I use are easy to get for me. I buy them in bulk - most reasonable cost. I would urge you to repot them asap - it is quite important to grow them in well draining mix...especially now, with few good months weather wise. Get rid of all old soil, peat is difficult to keep just right when it comes to moisture. Your Sansevieria is cylindrical type, may be 'Boncel' or S. patula. They do not need strong sunlight. I would plant them separately.

Thank you for the info! I have not see it for sale here in Ontario, Canada - but have to say that I try to stay away from the plant stores...otherwise, I would buy many plants! Outside is too cold now, but it would do great outdoors during warm weather. If you want to keep it in the office, it could be with help of a grow light. In low light, they will grow weak and skinny, and lose proper color. Whenever you are moving succulents from lower light into better, make sure it is gradual. Plant could burn otherwise. Succulents are mostly high light plants. There are some that will grow well in average light - like in your office - those would be Sansevierias, and many Haworthias. If you have a greenhouse, it will be good for your succulent. Make sure temps are above the freezing (supposedly your plant is hardy to about 30-35 F) Colder it is, watering should be more seldom.

did you properly moisten the media before planting... peat can be near water repellent ... until it has been moistened ... but before you repot them.. you might want to use a pre moistened cactus mix.. rather than a heavy peat mix as yours appears .... never forget.. the most important thing in a pot.. is the media ... not the plant ... think of media as a water management system .. holding or shedding the appropriate amounts of water.. for the plant in the pot ... and though those are really cool decorative pots.. i might try at least one of the plants.. in a plain old plastic pot... just to see if somehow the pot is causing part of the problem ... ken ps: if the pots have drain holes.. you ought to protect the wood below

Looks like Graptosedum probably Vera Higgins or Bronze. Possibly Alpenglow or California Sunset though too.

Are you asking about how he got the photo in the text. I don't know how it is with photo bucket but with Flicker, after one clicks on a individual photo there is a "share" tab I go there and I have a "grab the HTML/BBC", I choose the HTML code of the size I want , then I copy and paste it into my GW messages text. I press preview and it should come right up. Some forums use the BBC but GW uses the HTML code. One can list as many photos as you want. Look around your Photobucket account and see if you can find mention of HTML in regards to sharing. I can't help you with how photo bucket is organized. They are a mystery to me.

If the green leaves are all from the same plant, then likely Crassula ovata, Jade Plant. If, on the other hand, they are from a different plant, then they could be the more desireable (from my point of view) Crassula lactea.

More desireable because their bloom is a tight little clump of white flowers that look like 1/2 a golf ball. The plant is also smaller and doesn't make a shrub that provides a place for kittens to lurk. The only drawback is the Crassula smell to the flowers. They only smell for a week or so, but last a couple of months.

In photobucket, choose (by clicking on small box just below the photo) all the photos from the album you want to post; scroll down to bottom of the page; click on 'choose action' - select 'generate link codes for selected'.
New window will open; clik on first paragraph-it will turn yellow for a moment & 'copied' will appear. Paste to your message on GW. Photos will show if you preview your message.
