I hope I haven't made a mistake! I have two watermelon plants and the vines are intertwined and stretch 12 feet into my yard. Off those two plants I have had a total of 9 melons (which seems like a lot, but I'm not complaining!) The very first melon to start maturing suddenly stopped growing nearly a month ago at about 1-1/2lbs. Meanwhile others which started weeks later are now 5-6 lbs and a couple that have just started a week ago are already baseball sized. Although it didn't look like it was rotting it wasn't growing at all. When I examined the vine I saw that the plant end of it looked almost dead and the other end of it was also wilted and yellow. The tendril was dried up and brown. So reluctantly I cut the whole vine off close to the plant. I cut open the melon (of course!) and it looks beautiful inside! Although it is tiny and immature, it is deep red, firm and even somewhat sweet. SO....did I make a mistake removing it? I hate to think I terminated what would have been a wonderful melon :(

If the yard is not St Aug. then more than likely it is large leaf crab grass. Above is the best you can do and I will add to hope the new sod doesn't yellow from transplant shock which would make it stand out even more. If your friends/guests are going to be raising an eyebrow about that ugly little spot of grass in your backyard, I suggest you find new friends.

Tomato plants grow faster WHENT temperatures are on the high side and they get all the nutrients and sun they need..The opposite is cool temperatures and poor soil. On the flowering : If the plant is healthy and about 12" ++ tall , I would leave it to its own to decide. I believe that a tomato plant can grow and fruit in parallel. Another factor is the variety. Some are early, more compact and micro. So you would expect them to flower/ fruit much early. Yet another factor is a root bound condition. I have seen plants in 2" cell with fruits on it in the nurseries. Plants, when faced a dead end, get on with their mission : TO FRUIT AND PRODUCE SEEDS. sey

Yep, we're getting that rain too for the next few days. Maybe we will actually have a rainy season this year. The past few years, it started off o.k., then just stopped raining. Our ducks had no babies last year, because they need the water to hatch the eggs, and for the babies to swim in. The ducks next door had a few babies, but ours had none.
