overwintering clematis

never-give-up

I was given 2 clematis in 1 gallon pots. I have never grown them, or even seen them growing before, so I don't know what they should look at this time of the year. One has some brown leaves. I am not sure if their condition is caused by neglect at the greenhouse or if it is just the way they look at the end of the season?

The bed they are going in isn't ready and won't be until spring, so some how I need to get them through the winter as well. I saw a post on another forum that suggested overwintering in the garage or by sinking the pots in the ground and covering them. I was wondering if taking them out of their pots and planting them someplace else temporarily would be a better option as they don't look any too happy right now, at least to me?

I don't know if they are tough enough plants to survive transplant shock either.

Any information you can give me would be much appreciated!
