I was doing my trimming for cuttings and was going to whack a limb off. What the heck is this. I was sooo happy my 1st try and I am a pappy. It is a CG x Kyles giant White. I am home alone so you have to hear about me being a proud father. New camera is in Houston with dw. So I will wait and not use my old one so I can show it off in its full glory. (actually it is rather ugly) Well now I have to hope we do not freeze this winter.. Woopie.................................

Last year this time I was an ignorant newbie with sticks trying to make plants. What a strange journey it has been.

Roflamo, good job PAPPY! I hope to saying that one day. Today I am saying what the heck is happening with a lot of my cuttings not looking so hot all of a sudden.

Absolutely gorgeous! I already have strawberry candy, but love the rest. please check my list and let me know if I have anything you're interested in. I've been busy collecting seeds so not everything I have is posted right now. I have lots of perennials so if there's something specific you're looking for let me know - I may have it. Or if you're looking for something for a particular area (butterfly plants, wildflowers, shade, tall perennials,etc) I might just have something that'll fit.

Bambi, but using converted dips, the good results start immediately. So why beat yourself up? Look at all the 2010 intros and see how many come from converted dips, 1st generation. How many from dip X tet crosses? Actually, the odds would be about the same for embryo conversion. So low that it is just not worth the effort, not with today's readily available converted dips, IMHO of course! To give you an answer for pod vs. pollen parent tributes, I suggest taking a distinctive parent, plugging it into Tinker's database and looking at the flower's children. Try to use something with at least a 100 pod vs. 100 pollen children. See if you think any pattern develops. If you find something, let me know. I need convincing. wren-garden, I am hybridizing with both tet & dip. I think a lot of people do, especially while they are learning. It gives you a chance to see which you enjoy more and also you will eventually develop a sense for specific goals and at that point decide if you need to simplify by breeding one ploidy. Keep in mind that Tinker's says a plant is fertile but not how fertile. Some are more difficult parents than others. I have several that I crossed every bloom all season and don't have a single pod, however the same plants set pods other plants that were not my direct goals to work with. You may need some of those "super parents" to act as "bridge plants" to get the genes together that you really want to cross, albeit in a second generation. For diploid pink I would suggest 'Fairy Tale Pink' and/or 'Barbara Mitchell' both are vey fertile. FTP accepted every cross I made to it. Both are superb flowers in terms of form and color consistency. If you are interested in large flowered, dark eyed tet, I'd suggest 'Desperado Love'. It set pod with nearly every flower I crossed and its pollen set many that were hard to set pod parents. By the end of the season I was joking that it set pod if I walked by it with a stamen in hand. FTP and DL were my best two parents this first year of hybridizing myself. You may also want to consider buying seed of more expensive parents. I did that with the hope of getting some bridge plants with current genetics. It will be at least next year before I know how well that worked but it also gave me another year of experience germinating and growing seedlings while I waited for the opportunity to make my own crosses. Hi Marg: The bud count refers to the number of buds on an individual scape(flower stem) that the plant produces. The bud count will vary according to the age of the plant, weather and growing conditions, soil and the genetics of individual plants. The bud count can be as low as 1 and up into the 50's in good growing conditions. My bud count here in zone 5 averages between 18 to 30 per scape. Bud counts are usualy higher in warmer zones. Pollen is a part of the flower which fertilizes the flower to produce a seed pod. When you refer to pollen count I think you mean pod count or the number of seed pods produced on a scape. The majority of my plants do not produce seed pods without my help. A very small percentage of daylilies will be polinated by wind, insects or what ever and produce a seed pod. However, if I take the pollen from one flower and dab it on the pistol of another flower it will produce a seed pod if conditions are good. Now I am rambling, hope this is helpful.

And there's still so much more ahead of us! New friends - and people to share with - new cuttings to grow and then share THOSE . . . .all kinds of new and wonderful plants to kill - ok, just kidding. (grin)

Good luck with your seed pod. I hope it matures for you with some very hardy viables! And as soon as you've figured out how hardy they are - YELL - because this brug killer extradinairre will want some! (grin)

Congrats and the word is hybridizer. I'm in hopes that after you did the deed you closed her bloomers up so no one else could get her?? Again congrats to the new arrival and keep a sharp eye on her so she doesn't abort.

I am going to have 2 different mothers. Milk and Honey has a little one about an inch long. I did 3 flowers with my favorite CG. All on different plants the 3rd one I cut the limb off for cuttings I figured it did not take. Now I will leave the flowers alone after I pollinate one. My milk and honey was the hardest brug I have ever rooted it took 3 months and went from bucket to pot to log. From there it was live or die. It made it not a stellar brug but maybe CG will make it good.

Pollinator is a good name for my 1st try. I will be a hybridizer when I do something with more of a goal in mind. I did seal the flower. Question is can I cross between different CG's from different sources. I have some blooms getting ready to open. I imagine that they will not make the winter but there is a chance.

jeep461, nope on the different Charles unless they were misslabeled?? You know you can keep the pollen refridg. so if you collect it make sure you store it correctly. congrats and be careful if you have to move them.
