I've had good luck rooting the Sunset Jades, as well as other sports - like Gollum and Hobbit.
I have not been able to root the 'tricolor' Jade, though...of course, I only tried one leaf.
But from your results, and from JoJo's, I know that it can be done.

All the Sunset leaves that I've rooted have retained the unique variegation and bright scarlet color.
(I did have two plantlets rot when they were unexpectedly rained upon last Summer).
We always caution growers that sports may revert - so they aren't surprised if it happens -
but usually the rooting is successful.

I have noted that green leaves seem to root more readily than yellow or brightly colored leaves
that have been plucked from a different part of the same plant.

i use straight turface, i screen the fines out with a screen that could be in your window. then i wash it in a bucket until the water is clear.

My main Sunset Jade is in a mix of Turface and bark right now, but I might reduce the bark portion.

Jade man...out of curiosity how long after you put the unrooted cutting in pure turface did you wait to water...and also how often where you watering(appx) the unrooted cuttings in turface?

Like I mentioned in another thread I have a cutting that's been in the gritty mix since July 4th and it still doesn't have a single root! I might have to give this 100% turface a try too Josh!

I just need to know appx. when I need to start watering it?

i have been pleasantly surprised with my results so far. every plant (9 out of 10 being jades) that i put in pure turface has responded very well. i rooted my cutting of HS from Norma with great success, the roots that it grew were very numerous and vast. my adenium obesum seedlings so far are doing great. i have become a great fan of turface. So thank you to Al for his posts. using straight turface i do fertilize now. good luck and happy growing.

Bumping this thread in hopes Jade man sees my questions about watering with the 100% turface. Great pics!

I have never seen 'Jades" revert in all of my years of growing, I have never even seen a sport result in my leaves. I just let the leavs fall, after an open house and some have broke off I just let them lay where they fall, including on the cement, if they get roots, oh my goodness now I have too many, I toss them out. My 40 years of growing my old green and white variegated 'Jade' oblique is still in the same pot, I have changed the soil only once. She has never reverted. Each leave may be different I haven't bothered to look. Sorry I am late in sending out the boxes my daughter is in the hospital again. So haven't had the time. She is my priority right now. Norma

i missed your question the first time. i was given some great advice by Norma a while back to put your cutting into an empty pot and wait for roots. that does work well. we have had a very hot and often humid summer this year, and my cuttings that were large took a long time to root. and they did not get potted until they began to root and they were watered often until the leaves regained there firmness. then i watered them only when the leaves began to soften.

all of these plant are happy and healthy. this is the first time i have started plants from a single leaf with a turface and a constant water supply, and they are growing faster than any other plants that i have started from a single leaf. one last thing, they all get fertilizer every time i water. i use a c&s fertilizer, but i don't think that you have too. if you have any other question please ask.

jade-man, I used your all turface method and wow; the results are decisively impressive! It's only been a few days and there are roots! Btw, I have to say; I didn't keep the turface wet (at first) but after I kept it moist, man, the jade leave just started to come alive! LOL Thanks for sharing your rooting method jade-man!

In your posting of 9/8 at 12:45, you have a picture of a curved and rooted Hummel's Sunset cutting. A question...what happens with the exposed cut end? Will it eventually grow leaves? Do you cut it off when the plant is moved to a more permanent pot?

Hi Doug,
i have a cutting that has an exposed end like that. I rooted it in the 100% turface. I have roots on it and I am just waiting to see growth on the exposed end. The cutting really hasn't had too much time to establish though. I had roots form a few weeks ago. I will have to post a picture of it soon. I love that it is just growing in a terra cotta saucer.

You guys sure brought a smile to my face tonight. I am so glad you are having dicussions, regarding how to grow these plants, I just can't understand why all the fuss, and keen interest in this species.

I can't cut any more until they finish flowering, then I will cut again. Must wait until early spring.

red flowering species now has white flowers. I need to find out what caused this. Norma

my flowering red one turned to white, and I don't know what so I gave it some iron, it look peaked. Last year it had bright hot pink flowers. This year they are white. Norma

The important thing is to make sure that the nodes are in contact with the rooting medium.
Otherwise, as Doug mentioned, it's purely an aesthetic choice.

I rooted a 'Gollum' horizontal style for bonsai last summer, and it turned out pretty good.
I wish I'd had Turface to use, and I wish I'd pinned the cutting more securely.....
instead of propping it on a flat stone and simply tying it with twine. Doug's method looks much more solid.

i think it looks really great the way it is. the bigger the cutting the longer it takes to grow the roots that will hold it very secure.

There were a few times when the cutting was disturbed by an elbow or a passing animal,
and I'm sure that delayed/damaged some of the newly-forming roots. Another issue was heat....
the black plastic container really got cookin' on sunny days, and I started the cutting in August.
Bad timing on my part.
