Does the position of cut matter when deadheading?

I was snipping the fuzzy petal-less centers off Jackmanii today (so far a month in bloom!), when I started wondering if I need to cut the entire 4" stem that the bloom is on. Not sure that it matters.

Deadheading clematis is similar to deadheading roses in that if you don't get all the stem it will eventually turn brown and die off anyway..I remove the whole 4" myself...Jeanne

Thanks Jeanne!

Since it's not always easy to get at the base of the stem, does it do the plant any harm to let the stem brown itself?

Mindy, from the height my a.joy is now,(about 7 inches) it would be flopping open in the middle if I waited until july. I usually remove the skinny stems and pinch the remaining ones. You know you get multiple small flower heads from pinching. I don't see that they bloom or set color any later, regardless of pinching With all this rain, I don't see how any tall sedum will be standing upright by June 15, or May 30 for that matter. That's my opinion, anyway.

If anyone has seen evidence that letting hips develop increases the hardiness of repeat-blooming roses, I'd be delighted to see it. Until then, I'll continue to suspect that the notion started out as someone's wishful speculation and got elevated into a pseudo-fact without ever being tested empirically (that is, against a control group). There are many theories like this that have been widely believed and repeated in garden books but have been proven false by experiments. I do not say the theory is false, just that I know of no reason to believe that it is true. Most roses of HT/floribunda type will continue to grow and bloom despite setting hips. The China roses from which this behavior descends will set fruit and bloom year 'round unless the temperature falls below 28 degrees. So I question whether roses of this type have a mechanism that tells them "We have reproduced! Time to stop growing and harden up!" Also, of course, many roses will set few or no hips regardless of what you do. Finally, when roses set hips, they pump lots of carbs into the fruit--probably about as much as would go into a new shoot, or more. These materials might have been used to make more leaves to synthesize more carbs in the fall, or stored as fuel for spring growth, or used as sugar antifreeze. I'm not saying hips reduce winter hardiness of modern roses, but it's a fact that they are a sink for some of the plant's resources. So some years back I resolved to continue deadheading as long as I feel like doing it. The certain results of this policy are a neater garden and more fall bloom. Any impact on hardiness either way is an unknown, but I haven't noticed any difference.

After the bloom, during the summer, the foliage is collecting carbohydrates which it is feeding the roots. The roots make storage tubers which will be available to power the spring growth and bloom. If your plant is allowed to cover the leaf surface with mildew the work of the foliage is interrupted. When mildew is first seen the plant should be sprayed with a fungicide to protect the unaffected foliage. I would spray any affected plants no matter how bad the condition. I use a Bordeaux mix on a 10 day cycle of at least three sprays. You may have your peonies planted too close together with not enough air to dry the foliage. When does a Perched Water Table matter?

I am seeing this thread for the first time, and while I did not read the whole thing I am wondering if the original question was really addressed. The original poster is talking about situations where the root zone is far away from the perched water table. Instead of addressing that specific issue, somehow this thread got directed to the question of whether perched water table matters at all (clearly it does). Let's consider a specific example. Say I have an oil vase that is four feet high. I fill that will 511. Then I plant shallow rooted plants in that oil vase, so those roots are about 3.5 feet away from the bottom of the pot. In this post, a user makes the point that you want the root zone to have less than 5 kPa of pressure/tension in order to be able to take water out of the soil and nourish the roots. I do not understand this issue well, but using the data in that post (i.e., 1 kPa = 3.94 inches for a particular soil mix), that seems to imply that this soil mix would get to 5 kPa at about 20 inches of height from the top of the perched water table. You would get to 5 kPa at: 3.94 in/kPa * 5 kPa = 19.7 in ~= 20 in. That might imply that you want to keep the bottom of your root zone within 20 inches of the top of the PWT, otherwise the roots might have problems getting the best extraction of water out of the soil, in the days after watering. So back to the original question that was posted, it seems to me that there might be value in looking at the root behavior of what you are planting, and the size of the pot, and you might want to keep the bottom of your roots within an appropriate distance from the top of the PWT, in order to give the roots an easier time in extracting water out of the soil. That's way more complexity than most of us are willing to deal with, and I am sure there is a lot of science and practical understanding that I do not have on this issue. But maybe it is not a good idea to put a shallow rooted plant into a very deep container.

We're not all that fussy about deadheading clematis. We have perhaps 50 plants and many of the spent flowers are hard to get at. I know it's a no-brainer but be careful not to accidently snip the main vine when deadheading. Over the years we've learned to double check every cut on clematis 'just in case'. Yup, done 'oops' a couple of times over the years when pruning or cleaning up a clemmie.

Oh cutting the stem is a huge fear! You can never be too careful. It's a good reminder. =)

Meharty (and Jeanne). My view, for what it's worth, is to follow the horticultural rule: snip back to a bud or node. Cutting higher would/will probably result in dieback to the next growing point as there is no way the plant can produce growth where there is no bud/node! Dieback can, though not always, result in bacterial/fungal infection to the plant, such as is common in roses. No, I'd never snip a rose nor a clem. below a bud!

I'm sorry, last night in reading this posting I overlooked the fact mehearty was just 'deadheading', and I responded as though she/he were generally pruning - as in pruning a rose. Now, by the way, just to practice my pic. posting, and as conrtibuters to this page know, I really have no clematis pics to post but I'm working on that; so, I just thought I'd give you folks a look at an Aussie native that I've struggled with for some years but now at last have got to flower (I try a plant three times, if after that I can't succeed I give up and don't try it again). It's a native of (the state of) Western Australia, and therefore not easy to grow in the eastern states, which is where I am: It's 'The Black Kangaroo Paw', or Macropegia fulignosa.

WOW, Funnelweb, I just wanted to butt in and say that that's a fabulous plant you've got there! That black fuzz is just so handsome, and I think I'd be hard pressed to not stop and pet it every time I walked by...
