Broken clematis can I use it for propagation??

Okay i broke my 3 foot clematis and I wanted to know if i could put the stem in water and get it to grow roots and actualy grow and thrive? I really dont want to loose it its a Jackammani clematis the main plant has a leat and a cm little vine starting. Plz help I have it sitting in water right now. Oh and its just ending flowering and if i cant keep the vine will the seeds be viable? thanks for the help

I had success this year in starting new vines from cuttings.

I followed the instructions at: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~JN7H-OONM/contents/cuttings_e.html

I've been advised here to keep them in my small pot till well rooted and then transplant in a gallon size container in the garden. When it is again well rooted, then I should be able to remove the pot and transplant to its permanent spot.

I'm hoping for success but so far so good! Good luck.

thanks for the post I'll try it hopefully it will work ohhh and does anyone know if the seeds will still ripen or are they junk?

This thread is just what I was looking for....however, I am not able to view the picture from the original post by Mosscampion. I have an echeveria as well, a very small one that has now formed a long sprout from the center. Is this the flowering stem that you guys are referring to? I'm wondering if I can cut this off where it meets the main rosette and propogate it....please let me know if this is the same type of stem that you are referring to. If so, I will go ahead and cut it, let it callous for 3 or 4 days, and set it on top of a new pot filled with my succulent soil mix. Is this the right thing to do, or should I bury the bottom of the cutting in the soil? Any suggestions would be great. Mosscampion, I'd be interested in hearing if your cuttings actually rooted or not as well.....thanks!

Cuttings are very difficult to do, so I would suggest 'layering' the vine. This is done by burying a portion of a 'live' vine by placing a piece of the vine in a pot of soil. I dig a hole for the pot, next to the mother and put soil in to about the halfway mark. I bury a portion of living vine by 3-4" in the pot, cover and pat it well with more soil and water it well. You must make sure to bury a section that has leaves. In about 4-6 months, you can cut the main plant away and you will have a new plant. It helps to lift the pot out of the hole to see if you see roots coming out of the bottom of the pot. This is when it's wise to cut the mother vine away. Suzy

lets clarify what he said .. and he can correct me if i am wrong.. propagation of SMALL PIECES.. is possible at this time of year.. the odds.. IMHO.. of you rooting a whole branch.. are low to nil unless you have vast propagation experience.. a greenhouse.. a misting system.. and a bunch of other things.. i highly doubt.. you will stick a rather large piece in the ground.. and have a new large plant next year.. that is.. unless these things root like poplar, willow and forsythia ... and then.. never mind.. lol .. ken

I had the opportunity to visit Garden Crossing in Michigan. They have more than 100 different clematis in stock. The prices were great and even better on there sale table.

The original plant that you broke the vine from will be just fine. Breaking off the vine doesn't harm it at all. Jackmanni is one that you should hard prune every year in the first place.

Just keep the rootball well watered and it will sprout again.

It is not easy to root Clematis cuttings and hybrids don't come true from seed.
