selective clematis pests

I had 3 different Clematis by my fence, newly planted this year, but doing extremely well, especially my triternata rubromarginata. It grew 6' & was covered with loads of flowers. The Alba Luxurians was doing almost as well. I discovered today that practically overnight their leaves & flowers had been eaten leaving only the stems & branches. Only a few leaves at the base were not touched. Also, the Venosa Violacea next to them was NOT touched. Late Spring I had an Emilia Plater being eaten up & the Viola next to it again untouched. I don't see any insects and why wouldn't all the clematis get attacked when they were within a few feet of each other? Are some clematis tastier than others??? I have no idea what's going on. I've sprayed with sevin to hopefully get rid of the mystery bugs. I hope someone has an idea of what's going on & what I can do to encourage my clematis to hang in there.
