has anyone tried to grow artichiokes?
Comments (5)I figured that the only really good climate for artichokes was in the Salinas valley area of northern cali. So for years I never gave them a try. However 30 years ago I started with cardoon a very close relative. The seeds were hard to germinate. I must have started over fifty of them in trays. Finally I nicked the seed cover and was succesful. Now I think it would have been better never to have started them growing. They volunteer all over the yard including the lawn. I allow certain ones to grow and they are a beautiful big (6ft) plant with the purple flowers etc. Sometimes we will blanch and cook up the stems but it is very difficult to keep the aphids off the leaves for a clean stem. Since these grew so well a few years back I tried Globe artichokes from bareroot. They grow just as well as the cardoon and sometimes have decent artichokes for eating. When we have a long cool spring with overcast skies into the end of June we get a good crop. If you are trying to grow them just for the plant and flowers, try cardoon....See MoreHas Anyone Tried Cl. Lady Hillingdon as a Large Bush?
Comments (9)Against a wall it will be very easy to espalier cl. Lady Hillindon' and thus reduce the size by c. 50%, just prune it vertically instead of horizontally. If you've never done this before I find it is most easily done if I picture in my mind a wall coming closer to the plant, for my Teas that is c. 4 and 1/2 feet outwards, (from the real wall in back of it) and then removing any growth outside that imaginary wall. Dozens of Old Garden Tea's of this size are kept at c. 6 feet tall by 6 feet wide, but only c. 4 and 1/2 feet from a stone wall on outwards, at a local public Old Rose garden. I'll see Luanne tomorrow, ( I pick roses with her on Thursdays) and mention your request, that Mac of hers really is something, and she has made a sublime plant out of Reve d'Or' by espaliering it against a garden shed, and also removing the bottom canes from the ground level to c. 4 feet, to open the view to show the companion plants and smaller rosebushes below it. Luanne introduced me to Old Garden Roses and I owe her a debt of vast beauty and love. Luxrosa...See MoreAnyone else grow Gloster Butterfly Bush?

Comments (2)Yes you can. I would look up the germination instructions for it first though. I'm also in zone 6 and I get vollunteers from them sometimes, but only one or two. I think winter sowing them is a great idea! Whatis, I have the seeds I'm sowing listed on my thread at native plants forum. There are a lot of host plants and a lot of extra seeds so if you would like any of my seeds, I'd be happy to share. Jay...See Morecarrie630
