dividing very old christmas cactus

I have a 50 year old Christmas or Easter Cactus that has been healthy, bloomed and repotted many times---usually take to a flower shop to do so. Last winter it was neglected and lost all its leaves. Left out all summer, growing new leaves. Question--can I divide it. Removed it from pot and rinsed off ---it has one 3-4 inch diameter (no root coming from it)trunk and about 6 one inch branches about 12 inches long with branches and slowly getting new leaves. It looks like there are no new roots. Some old roots are growing around and into trunk, shaped like curlicues. Also there are roots hanging from inches above soil line. Can or should I cut it in half or cut off some of the branches to reroot. Will very old branches reroot? I know this is long. sorry.
