Brugs ? What Have I got myself into???

Well this is one of the most interesting forums I've been on in a long time.

You folks keep me laughing all the time. Since I'm new to brugs I need to ask a few quesions.

To Bubble or not to bubble? To root in water or plant in soil? To keep inside, or in a small hot greenhouse with lots of humidity. I think I have 2 glasses that I don't have brugs in.(yet) LOL

A couple of you have been kind enough to share this new addiction by sending me some cuttings in the mail. Thank you so much for caring enough to share with other plant lovers.

My bar area is covered with cuttings of BRUGS, daylily seedlings, canna seedlings, and a few other seedlings or plants I'm trying to root. Did I mention I can't use my table because it has all kinds of plants on it? LOL

I planted a bunch of the BRUG cuttings in just reg. potting soil from Lowes. Do I need to yank them out and plant them in a different kind of soil? These little jewels didn't cost me anything but the postage. I still want them to survive and have a happy homelife. LOL I don't want to bring them up in a disfunctional home/pot/water/whatever. I guess I should start spraying them with asprin water too huh? Give my new brugs an asprin and they can show me in a day or two if they are feeling better.

Rolling eyes and wondering what the postage would be to have someone send me a 3 to 4 ft log. to try rooting in a trench here in TEXAS. HUmmmmm now that's gonna be my next project.

Tech- maybe you should consider putting in a revolving door to the garage. LOL I can just see you running back and forth with all the stuff in your hands.

I'm going to go look at my brugs real close and see if I see anything going on.

I hope none of them are turning up their toes.

I had a few Brugs from the early to the late 90s. I loved them then - and I love them even more now!

Dynamark --- You and I are sharing a brain wave. I spend last night completely disassembling the thing and I decided my challenge was to get the thing quasi-restored, together, and running. No big feat, right? The catch: I can only spend $20. This is going to mean a lot of fabrication of parts, scrounging for junk from parts mowers... I do love a challenge! I took apart, soaked, and reassembled the carb last night. All the removable things (wheels, blades, adjusters) were soaked overnight in a bucket of hot water and simple green and will be blasted off today, and the deck was soaked overnight with simple green brushed on liberally, working its way through the goop. Here are a few simple suggestions I hope help: Don't buy any more violets no matter how tempted. If you do, you will be truly overwhelmed. Winter is not a good time to ship, anyhow. This will give you time to learn about them and to make your mistakes. As Irina said, there's a learning curve and we all lose violets; even those who have had them for years. Unless you've already repotted, leave them in the pots they came in for a while (I usually go six weeks). They can then adjust to your environment. Don't over-pot or your AVs will spend time growing roots instead of leaves and blooms. A rule of thumb is the pot should be 1/3 the leaf span. So a leaf-span of 3" should be in a 1" pot; a 6" span in a 2" pot. Others are more up on the largest pot in which you should put a mini or semi. When you do repot, you can cut regular AV soil with perlite (coarse is best; I get mine online or at the local co-op). 3:1 is the ratio with perlite being the bigger number. If you received blooming or ready-to-bloom plants you were lucky. Most aren't shipped that way and it could take the others a month or two before you see the first bloom. And most important of all: If you need reading glasses, WEAR THEM when you repot. :-D Happy Growing! Linda

HI Shawn, Thanks, I was wondering how long they took from seed. One of my cuttings has a Y. The plants look healthy, but they haven't bloomed. I had one bloom and as soon as it did, it was determined that it had to be moved! (Dangit, LOL) None have bloomed since then. Anyway, I just got : betty marshall, Mrs. Chambers, cupids blush and jamaican yellow. I am so excited, I looked at pics in someones posting and I really want mine to bloom like that! I would love one. I have two raosters, but neither has the buffet insert, which I would love. Linda, it's a tray with three compartments that sits right in the roaster so you can keep three different items hot on a buffet. A 3 to 4 ft cutting runs anywhere between $9 and $11 to ship. I sent a fair number of that size out last year.

Any type of well draining potting soil should be fine. I usually root mature stems in water and green stems in soil. Green stems are much fussier for me and often rot so I try to stick with the mature cuttings. With mature cuttings you will see little white bumps (sometimes faint, sometimes very pronounced) along the lower portion of the stem, even before it's started to root. Those bumps are what will become the nubbies then the roots.

I wish it was only one area in my house that was covered with plants! lol Don't laugh about the aspirin. Salicylic acid (the active ingredient in aspirin) is often used as a rooting promoter. People make "willow water" out of willow bark which contains salicylic acid and use that on their plants.

If you don't use an aerator then you have to change the water and clean the inside of the container often. You can root them anywhere in water. If you are starting them in soil I might use the greenhouse. Good luck.

lovelyiris, best of luck!! If I would of found Brugmansia some 20 years ago, I don't think I'd would of left that area. Karyn has given you some fun pointers.

I thank all of you for responding and I can't wait to see how successful I am with these little jewels.

Here I am already looking at a bunch of those expensive BRUGS and drooling to get a couple. Of course I think it would be wiser for me to wait and see how I do with the cuttings and so forth 1st. So far everything seems to be doing ok. I had a little green one that looked kind of sick at the top and so I was going to yank it out and toss it. When I pulled it up it was rooted and had little shoots of leaves coming up from underneath the dirt. So I trimmed the top off slightly and put that puppy back in the dirt.

Just like most of you I want one of those ANOUSCHKA's by Monika. That thing is out of this world. Ahhhh breath taking to say the least.

But on a more realistic note I'd settle for some of these.

I have a 2 year old 'Herrenhauser Garten'. I bought it shortly after I purchased 'Xena'. I could have sent you a cutting of it! lol! It's not bloomed for me yet & has been in a large pot for two years (and VERY pampered) - but he'll be three next year (possible blooms)! If you'd like - I can start a cutting for you & ship out in spring. That will be another one OFF your growing brug list! And did anyone mention you're becoming addicted?? :)
