Kalanchoe air rooting!

I've had my Kalanchoe outside all summer, and it's leaves have gotten full and healthy looking. I brought it inside about a week ago to try to get it ready to bloom this winter. It has started getting those awful white stem-roots again, that it refrained from doing all summer. How do I get it to stop wasting its energy on roots and redirect it to blooms!!! I stopped fertilizing when I brought it in because it was getting so leafy. It is in a northwestern window and gets a lot of strong light in the daytime.

Kalanchoe do that, get air roots, that is their missioin in life, and start new babies. I don't think it will flower until the very early Spring from new growth. Norma

Norma's right, Kalanchoes do that w/ those roots (I grow them indoors, west window, mine likely won't bloom indoors, but they do make those roots, sometimes in hot pink, very pretty).

I'd listen to her abt the blooming, she grows outdoors & some greenhouse in CA, has more blooming & experience conditions than I do.

Not all fertilizers are abt putting on leaves. If one uses a fertilizer for succulents, they tend to be numbers something like 2-8-6, the lower number in front is specifically to nourish the plant other than its leaves. You might look for some for next Spring.

Hi there, I will share something that I heard on this forum, although it was in reference to an echeveria rather than a kalanchoe. Aerial roots form when the soil is kept dry, and then the air is humid. Just a way that these plants have to take advantage of any moisture available. I also have a K. tomentosa that occasionally might get a few aerial roots, and a bryophyllum that regularly does get aerial roots, especially in the summer when it is humid here. If I don't like how they look, I just rub them off. Mostly I just ignore them.

Thanks Dzitmoidonc! The plant was given to me 2 months ago - it was a cutting back then. When I checked its roots at that time, it had none. I do not know how much roots it has grown since then - I have to check. How long does it usually take for a plant to be pot bound? As for the plant becoming leggy - it hasn't happened yet. I mean, I think it still looks the same from the time I received it. But I might try what you had suggested in the future when the plant becomes leggy. Honestly, I have been observing the months every week and I don't notice anything (regarding the plant growing) except for the aerial roots. I will keep this advice in mind when I am watering. Thanks again!

Loretta I never stick them into soil either, just leave them on top. And I never tried to cut the leaves up either. Kalanchoes generally root so easily, but I never tried Fang, or Copper spoons. Rina

Thanks for the reassurance on the roots! I'll stop worrying.
The fert. I was using was a Miracle grow bloom booster -like, for african violets. Should I keep using it throught the winter?
