Nelly Moser Color

I have a Nelly Moser on a 6 foot pillar trellis with a south exposure. I've had it for probably 6 years. It is a great prolific bloomer. When it was younger, the blooms were almost white with a pink stripe down the middle. The last couple of years I noticed the blooms that came earliest, when it was cold, were more of a lavendar, with the darker pinkish-lavendar stripe down the middle. Now this year, it is july, and it is still blooming these lavendar blooms, and friends that have clematis are questioning if it is really what I say it is, it is that much more purple than pink. Is it normal for a Nelly moser to bloom more lavendar with age? Is there a cultural aspect to the color, like with Hydrangeas? I can't complain about the lush flowers all summer long, it just seems strange for it to change after several years.

tstrombotn, would be great if you have a photo you could post for us! This might be something 'normal' OR you might possibly have a portion of the plant that has sported itself and now displaying a different coloring than what is usual for Nelly Moser.

Well, I took a picture with my digital camera this morning, but in the photo it looks way more pink and white than it does in person. Any suggestions? Also, my digital picture is like 600+ kb, so I have to figure out how to shrink it down.

Sure doesn't look like Nelly to me. It seems to be difficult to get this one true to type. I also ordered 2 from a certain nursery, and I ended up with 2 deep navy blue/purple clems. I did get a credit for one, but I never bothered re-ordering. That was the only place that had Nelly, and I guess I just don't want to get the wrong one again. Good luck with your ID. Judith

My Nelly to looks anemic. I got her last fall at the Middle TN Plant Swap so this is my first year with her. She is growing nicely but the leaves are very pale and almost have no, what I call green color to them. The leaves are almost greensh yellow, more yellow than green. She looks heathly but i'm not use to seeing the pale leaves on my clem's. I'll try the Epson Salt on her. I have been watering her with cow poo tea. She is in a large pot which will be getting full sun in the near future and after reading the post about her blooms fading I think i'll go ahead and move her to the north side of the house which will only getting very early morning sun and see how she like it over there. it was planted there two years ago and i knew nothing about clematis. first year it grew well but little bloom. then last spring i pruned it to the ground before realizing you do not do that to this variety. so that year no blooms hardly; just regrowth. so i was eager this year to see what it would really do- i lightly pruned the stems of deadness and couldn't believe that anything would regrow on those dead looking stems. this is all new for me too this beautiful first flush- i think i am doing something right this year !

Well I use photobucket and as far as i know it automatically shrinks it down. Have a look at www.photobucket.com Golden

Thanks! I'll give it a try. I'm going to try to take a picture without the flash too, to see if that helps with the color issue
