clematis bulbs-Should I plant it now?

Hi Everyone,

I'm and just love all the stuff I'm learning.

Here is a question I have. I went to my local hardware store a few weeks ago and they had a bunch of bulbs on sale, gladiolas and a few others. I bought a bunch of them and took them out to look at them today and I got a Cematis plant-Jacmanii. Should I plant this now? Is it too late or should I wait till next year?

I know from what I've been reading I better plant the gladiolas now or the bulbs won't last till next year. Is it the same for the Clematis.

Sue, unless your gladiola bulbs are hardy, they are for spring planting. Clematis, on the other hand, isn't a bulb. I would look at the root system. If it looks like good roots, plant it now. Rinse (hose) off the planting medium that's on them and plant in good amended soil. Plant roots AND about 3" of the vines themselves. Water and unless your soil is water retentive, keep on watering every couple of days but not to the point of it being soggy. You will need a trellis for next season. Jackmanii get rather large and beautiful! About early April, cut your clematis vines down to about 6" and fertilize using tomato fertilizer. Miracle Gro sells this (for one.) It won't matter if it gets snowed on. Enjoy! :) P.S. if the roots of your clematis look weak and underdeveloped, plant pot and all as I mentioned above. It will have the rest of this season to develop strong roots then for transplanting next season.

Hi mzstitch, I posted a link to what I think, is a very good website. I started growing clematis 3 years ago, and I followed this advice, and my clems have done very well. I also have clay/alkaline soil, so I dug all of my holes 12-18 inches deep, and about 12" wide. I added a few inches of gravel to the bottom of the hole, and then the amendments suggested at the link on how to plant at a fence. I also put a piece of 2" pvc pipe with many holes drilled in it, the same length of the hole, so that I could get plenty of water to the roots, and I planted my clems about 4-6" deep. I saw a blooming 'Pink Flamingo' three weeks ago or so at Home Depot labeled 'Ruby'. I purchased a 'Blue Bird' a couple years ago and it was correctly labeled. It wasn't in bloom when I bought it. I've seen an entire table of blooming 'Piilu' mislabeled at Lowe's but I can't remember what they were marked. I've had trouble with bulbs from Costco, Wal*Mart and Home Depot not being correctly labeled. I did just get lucky and the Wal*Mart packaged Peony I bought on a whim because it was two bucks was correctly labeled. It finally bloomed today. I tend to see mis marked blooming plants at big box stores often so I mostly now only buy them when in bloom. You can get bargains there, especially on some of the expensive stuff like Proven Winners shrubs. I did hand two dwarf Rhododendrons to a clerk at a local independent garden center recently that were mis-marked.

Neither the Peruvian Daffodils nor the Caladiums are going to be hardy for you. They are not fall planted bulbs because your winter would kill them. So it is probably best to put them in containers asap and cross your fingers. I suggest you research the two separately to get more precise advice. The tulips could go in the fridge or a very cool dry store until the Autumn, if they are in good condition.

If the bulbs are still viable (firm; no signs of soft spots or rot), probably just some foliage later in the season. If you allow the foliage to grow and ripen properly and the protect the containers over winter from freezing, then it is likely you will see normal daffodil behavior - including flowers - next spring
