Which clematis do you consider a 'dud'?

I have come to the conclusion that Guernsey Cream is my dud. I have had it for at least 5 years and I did get a few blooms last season for the first time. This year nothing so far, not even a bud. It grew nicely and it is lush and green so I think maybe it is time for it to go.It is planted near the foundation of the house so that could be the problem,however, I have another clem. just a few feet away that has been blooming nonstop.

Franziska Maria, I have had for 4 years and have had 3 blooms total! It never grows more than 2 ft tall and is still spindly despite my attempts to cut back to the ground to get more vines. It's gone in spring! I have several other clems in the same bed that do much better!

Hmm-m-m-m . . . GC is one of my happier type II clems, and has bloomed well since its second or third year. It grows in more than 1/2 day shade up into a lilac in a bed of well-rotted manure over fine sand.

My dud is Niobe. It's probably about 6 years old and never gets bigger than a few stems that are 3 1/2 feet high with about 3 flowers a year. It gets sun until about 1 PM and then bright shade for the afternoon. It's the only plant in this bed that doesn't thrive. Anyone have suggestions as to how to make Niobe happy?

I also have a Polish Spirit (or that's what it was labeled) in 1/2 day sun that hasn't ever bloomed and is probably in its fifth season. It grows smaller than PS is supposed to also, though a Texensis hybrid right next to it on the same trellis blooms just fine.

I may move both of the duds to see if they will be happier in full sun before shovel pruning since I don't have a space problem currently.

Have you researched the ICS list of clematis for beginners: http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/clematis/beglist.htm ? In my garden I have the white Paul Farges/Summer Snow clematis which grows all by itself, blooms for a long time and to me is lovely but has small flowers. I also have General Sikorski which has large vibrant lavender flowers - that one is hard to kill but would not tolerate too much sun as its flowers would fade. To prolong the bloom season, perhaps you would find space for more than one plant: an atragene (e.g. white or pink double flowered to be more visible), then e.g. an early large flowered one and a viticella or a tangutica for the end of summer? I find atragenes very rewarding in the spring - they bloom very early when the ground is still bare, later they present nice foliage and seedheads. They are very easy to grow - just allow 2-3 years for them to get established. If you have little time for your garden, pruning is also a factor to consider - I generally prefer varieties which require either hard or no pruning at all.

Which granites do you consider 'bulletproof'?

I'm no expert but here are the ones I or my family have had personal experience with over the years that were bulletproof with no sealer: Fashion Green (I think it's called Gaugain or Waterfall sometimes) Antique Brown (aka Marron Cohiba or Coffee Brown) Absolute Black Volga Blue Blue Pearl Verde Maritaka Verde San Francisco Verde Butterfly Ubatuba Copper Green Most of these are so hard that they won't even accept a sealant; it leaves a haze on top because the stone won't absorb the sealant. I hear lots of talk on this forum about granite being delicate, staining easily, etc., but I've had many different granites in the baths and kitchens of the homes we've lived in over the years (different stones in every home) and all have been virtually bulletproof except for unsealed Giallo Veneziano (which absorbed water by the sink but showed no other stains in 6 years). I have a friend with Delicatus and it does absorb red wine.

NHB, I love decorating books. I don't really use them for coffee table books - although I do have a few out in the sunroom. I love several of the magazines you listed, and for that same reason, I love decorating books. They are something I may look at time and time again for ideas, inspiration or just to enjoy the pretty pics! I would have never described you as a minimalist. To the OP, I love Kitty Bartholomew's book. There are also several cottage decor books that I love and several window treatment design books that generally show whole rooms. I also have Bunny William's book, although I will go against the grain and say that I do not like it as well as all the hype it generated. It was a bit of a let down when I got it. Still a beautiful book. Martha Stewart has a book on her new old house, or something to that effect, I greatly enjoyed it. I will have to look at some of my titles and get back to you. I only read War and Peace once, but I read Gone With the Wind three times - the first time when I was ten. As a teenager, I became fascinated with Thomas Hardy novels, partly because I always identified with his tragic heroines, and I tried to figure out why I could not identify with any of his male characters. I did not identify with any character in GWTW, and the only character I really liked was Mammy and maybe Rhett Butler. I read a lot as a teenager because I grew up on a farm, which I hated, and there was little else to do. When I was taking a graduate course in History of Architecture, I checked out three copies of Alberti's Ten Books on Architecture, one in the original Latin, one in archaic English (from from 1755), and a modern Italian translation, so that I could compare them. I found the Italian translation to be closer to the original Latin (and I did not want to try to read the entire book in Latin), and so I returned the Latin and English versions and read it in Italian. I read a couple of architecture books in French, but they weren't as good as the ones I could find in Italian. When I studied Ancient Greek Art, I found more books in German than in English, and I also read articles in Die Zeit from the 1930s that the library had on microfilm. I never did learn Greek beyond the alphabet, which is somewhat similar to Cyrillic, with which I was familiar from having studied Russian. At one time I considered going to graduate school to get a degree in comparative literature, but I would have had to go to Buffalo or Berkeley; Buffalo was too cold, and Berkeley was too expensive. I also realized that this degree would not have been very good for a career, other than teaching, and I really did not want to do that.

I have decided that there are no duds, only bad locations/culture.

Many of my Clematis were not planted in properly dug and amended holes and not hard pruned the first few years either.
Many were planted right in the middle of mature fir tree roots without a barrier.

Most of these have been duds. Hard pruning and fertilizer has helped some but some are still poor growers barely hanging on with a few stems and blooms.

My friends yard has no tree roots, little clay and she takes the ones I can't stand anymore and they grow like crazy for her without any special care. This has happened about six times now over the last few years so I can only assume my conditions were the problem, not the individual plants.....

I agree with nhbabs: Niobe is a dud!

Twice I have planted her in two different spots, both of which should be good for clematis, but all she does is struggle to survive the first year and fail to return the second (and succeeding) years.

Obviously I don't know how to make her happy. The other 30 clems I have not only grow and bloom--they do it pretty much on their own. About all I remember to do with them is prune them in the spring and water occasionally during the hot summer. That's enough for them--they are happy as larks!

But Niobe--nada!
