Anyone in Aiken County or environs growing plumaria (indoors and out, of course)? Would like to communicate with others re: the challenges (and the joys) and possibly trade.
Gardenscents, I looked up Plumaria on the internet and they are beautiful! Now I want one! Do you keep it in the house over the winter? I bet it would love it outside here. I am going to buy one in the spring in APril, when I can keep it outside right away, then bring in for winter. If you know of a place I can buy one that isn't real expensive, please let me know. Oh, by the way, I live in Aiken county.
Not only do they look pretty, but they smell heavenly. They go dormant in the fall, even in Florida where I brought them from. They seem to like our hot, humid summers, but keep in mind they are trees if left unchecked. 3 of mine are in HUGE pots that I can't move by myself and are 7 feet tall, but I'm going to root prune them this spring. Had to cut them back also. Quite a challenge, but well worth it! I bought a "stick" from Cold Creek for $5 2 years ago, and that's the one that is 7' tall with no side branches. Many challenges keeping them going, but like all things simplicity is the key to growing them.
Gardenscents, Looks like I'll be checking out Cold Creek next season since you said they sell them. I really like that nursery, they have beautiful plants, but they can be pricey. I have to have one of those plumerias now. I hate the winter, it's so cold and long. Have a wonderful Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you too! CC is definately pricey - I only buy stuff on sale (got a lemon tree for $20 there) and the plumaria was a stick for $5.00. I'll give you one of my seedlings, which should bloom this year as they are 3 years old. Should wait until April tho - temps need to be above 50 and stay there.
Gardenscents, CLick on my name and email me at email on my gardenweb profile. Heading out to visit family for the holidays, will be back around New Years. I would love to have one of your seedlings of plumaria. Have a safe holiday!
