Could the carbuncled Ech be E. Etna? just testing my chops. I don't have it and have only seen it in Pictures.

Could the carbuncled Ech be a E. etna. I am testing my ID chops since I have only seen it in pictures and never in life.....so far. It is on my short list.

There are several "look-alikes". E. Barbillion, E. Etna, E. Paul Bunyan or E. Kilauea. This one I've been calling E. Paul Bunyan but have been told it is not. So back to trying to find a name.

It is a beauty, whoever it is.

So many gorgeous plants that I would never even attempt! I too love the carbuncled and would like to come across some of those one day. Some people aren't fans, but I find them so unusual. Are they a pain or impossible to start from leaf?

I wanna get my nose in that Haw planter. It's that time of year, isn't it. They're waking.

Colleen, most Echeveria are very easy; they tolerate lots of neglect. Like many other succulents, they don't like cold and wet. Some are easy to start from leaves while I personally have had some problems with hybrids... doesn't mean it can't be done. Currently, I'm attempting E 'Raindrop', E. 'Baron Bold' and E. lilacina.

Oh, I mostly meant the Mesembs, in terms of things I probably wouldn't try growing. :) And if you have good success with starting your carbuncled E.s from leaf, tell us all. I've heard they can be problematic. If I had 'em, I'd be trying from leaf, too, because they're so darn expensive when I see them for sale.

Howard please let me know when you get the definitive ID as I believe that is the one you sent me. BTW it's the fastest growing echeveria I've had. They are about twice the size now as when I got them.

Karyn, I'm 99% certain I sent you this one. If it's grown that much, it should have some carbuncles. Bev Spiller (Echeverias in OZ)thinks it may be E. 'Kilauea' or 'Virginia Lee'. These hybrids are very difficult to ID.

WEll, if you are ever in the mood to give any more of them away, please think of me. I am one of those that love carbuncles on my plants. I am cool with carbuncles just as long as they are not on my body ,.

Zeck, yes that is an Astroloba, good eye. Careful, mesembs will force everything else out of your greenhouse;)

Rina, Thanks, I just organized before sowing seeds because I was running out of space. Yes the greenhouse is covered in shadecloth but with a plastic roof to protect from rain. Cold isn't a problem here so I go for maximum airflow.

Mara, phalanxes, good word. Yes, the troops are all lined up. I have a feeling that carbuncled Echy will pup for me this year if you're interested.

Howard, it looks like you guys are well on your way to IDing the Echy. I bought that one in a 4" pot when it was much smaller, pretty happy with its growth.

Kathy, don't worry, all messes can be cleaned up. I had to organize or I wouldn't have had room for newbies. Now there's really no space left.

Colleen, yeah it's really great to be able to get the Haws wet again. I lost a few this summer (no biggie). My experience with starting large-leafed Echeveria from leaves has been negative. They'll form roots but that's about it. I have 3 trays of various leaf-starts that are constantly producing for me so I have a pretty good base of comparison. It never feels right to remove a leaf that size from the plant anyway.

Mara, I offered lots of divisions this summer. Now most are gone GH. I sold several to a local GH and did some plant trades with the others. Next summer email me.

I would be interested in either Carbuncled uncle from either of you. Hansrobo, If yours pups email me, and Bikerdoc, If I remember next summerI will ask you. I might forget. I am headed off to Europe , I think , for a job and I think my mind might be wiped clean by this experience.

Oh, no, it wouldn't really be right to remove a leaf from a plant that size, I agree. I just wondered! I just had a feeling they might be difficult to propagate that way.

Yes Karyn, that is the same as above. With time, it will develop more carbuncles. Before you know it, you'll be whacking the head off and growing lots more!
