Are roots coming out of the bottom? Don't judge the plant by the top growth. If it has a well developed root system they may be able to go in the ground. If not pot up to 1 gallon size.

Be very careful of My Angel. It is the thug of the clematis world and will take over everything. I've heard it also tends to make a lot of babies - like weeds.

I have Blakitne anjol, which is blue angel, have to check if it is same plant. It is gorgeous!/produced by Polish clem breeder/.
I had much better luck with repotting clems several times in bigger pots while putting them deeper and deeper to produce more stems. Per Donahue clems company recomendations
I keep small clems in small pots until they become quite rootbound, then gently straighten roots out and replant in bigger pot while bury it couple of inches deeper. I end up with strong rooted clems which are ready to take on the world.
Clems that have been planted from smaller size right into the garden also make it but it seems take them longer to regain their full strenght. I also would recommend Donahue clems to everyone- they send you small pots for reasonable price, have great variety and their clems seems to be most robust ones, easily overtaking ones I bought in one gallon sizes.
And I am Clematisholic as well, I think I am close to 60 clems by now and still want more ;)

Katie is correct when she say's My Angel gets big and it spreads out wide. it has really cool small bronzy flowers.the blue angel looks like this{{gwi:601882}}

Thanks for the responses guys. I was planning on planting the "my angel" under a 6ft garden obelisk by itself in a 3x3 bed. Do you think that will work? It sounds like a prolific grower. Or I could pair it with an Ernest Markham on a 7ft trellis. Whataya think?

Ok I googled it, it is type 3 small flowering group. I do not have it but I grow many similar clems from seeds, they do seed prolifically and easy to grow from seed. My experience is they die to the ground every winter and are never get too heavy. When you train them on your trellis try to place stems horizontal as much as you can this way even your 3 feet trellis will be enough for its height. It is somewhat tedious task since clem naturally wants to go up. If you can not be meticulous with this task you can let upper part get heavy or cut it when it becomes too much for your trellis. They bloom on new wood so cutting them is possible anytime practically.
