Part of the brug story! It does happen & it happens to all of us. I would take the cuttings & cut away the mushy part & stick in water or a bubbler. Add a few drops of peroxide if using plastic/glass containers. I add several capfuls when using the bubbler method. Change daily or every other day. I'm curious to know (like Chena) - Which ones are they? Some are harder to root than others as we know. Let's see what others might suggest to help you save the wee ones! :)

Oh my...Desiree, madaline,Tiara, hawaiian double white. I am afraid to look at any more. I felt the cutting of the others and they feel firm, so I don't want to mess with them ! I was afraid to take them and put them in the water after they had been in soil. I guess at this point, I don't have any thing to loose. So you think this will be ok. Right now I have them wrapped in a wet towel. Chena save me some cuttings, I might be brugless by spring. LOL

Quite a variety! :) Desiree' & Tiara are pretty easy to root in water. Just got Hawaiian Double White cuttings last week - so not too sure about them as far as water rooting goes. I wouldn't do anything with them yet until you hear from a few others. They may have better ideas of what do do than me! :)

Thanks Mike, I am all ears. :) I have them wrapped in wet towels. I am thinking that they would be better off in my bubbler. I was just unsure about taking from soil and then to water, was just afraid I would kill them. Edna

Ednam, if you mean the insides are firm and ALL of the outside 'skin' is mushy they are as good as dead.
Mind you I never did save the one that got the same thing so anybody who has had success with this is better to be heard. Mine usually dry up a bit at the tip during the process of rooting.

In the meantime, there's always a chance to try some things I did do if you have firm skin left somewhere on the lower part. A few tips that might help but won't hurt.

You can put them back in a cup of water having cut off the mushy part as Mike advised. If there wasn't any good sized nubbies before you put them in soil it's ok to take them out of the dirt and grow some more roots. Although I doubt it's for lack of water as they'd dry up.

Keep the water around 70F, which means away from drafty windows to.

Make sure the chlorine is out of any water used. Shake a container of water and blow over the water, keep a little distance and smell the water. Keep shaking until you don't smell the chlorine. You can leave water out to open air for 24 hours and the chlorine will leave it. To speed things up on a larger amount of water, bucket or aquarium etc, use a blender. Make sure no electrical parts can get submerged...better you just hold on to it and whip the water around, taking a break whenever necessary.

If you're going to put them in water, place about 1/2 in water, (don't know what size you have or how many nubbies are on the lower portion but it'll matter as far as how much water the plant will be able to absorb, therefore if there's a lot of nubbies you won't need so much in the water no less than 1/4). Try to keep at least 1 branch eye up out of the water, it's easier for the new branch(es) to grow out of these but not necessary.

Place a sandwich bag (drape saran wrap) over it loosely. If you seal it you will get all of those white nubbies all up the stem growing roots.

My experience with sealing them: mine looked like they had chicken pocks...real bad. Then it shriveled quite a bit when re-exposed to air, and hardened the branch, still don't know if anything is going to come of this branch.

Make sure they are right side up. The angle left where the branch used to be also shows which way the branches were growing. Or viewable as a thinning branch.

Sorry to hear that. Did these have roots at one point and they are now gone? If so it's possible you have something in the soil either eating or rotting the roots. Sometimes it just happens for no obvious reason. I was going through some potted brugs today just cleaning up dropped foliage and noticed that I lost one that I'd bought about a month ago. The entire stem was soft, including below the soil line. I have no idea what it was and it had been looking good with several areas of new growth a few days ago but it's now residing in the trash can. Just in case there's some sort of larve in the soil I don't reuse it and I don't compost the dead plant. If you have any firm portions of stem left try some of the ideas mentioned above. Good luck. I hope you are able to salvage some.

Hi, it looks like you got a lot of good advice here. Are your cuttings green or woody? I have had the bark slip on woody ones when I had them in dirt and the dirt stayed too wet or wasn't draining properly for whatever reason. If you have an mushy or slipping bark you need to cut above that area. First wash your stems off really well with a little antibacterial soap diluted in lukewarm water. Then cut with a clean blade.
Then get a short glass jar or those little clear juice glasses. I usually start all mine in those (unless they are those floppy green ones lol). Only put an inch or two of lukewarm water in the bottom of the glass (enough to cover the bottom inch of the stem). Keep this water changed a few times a day. Morning and before bed is easy to remember. When you change your water rinse the glass out a few times before refilling and gently rinse the bottom tip of the stem. Don't add anything to the water or it will become slimy. Peroxide may be okay but I havent used it on any cuttings that don't have roots so I can't comment on that lol.
Keep at room temp under lights on a sturdy shelf. Away from drafts or cold windows. Once these get roots around 1/2 inch long or so then you can pot them up into small pots. Use a good potting soil and mix in extra perlite for drainage. Make sure when you water it drains immediately. Wait for it to dry out a little on top before re-watering.

This is exactly what I would do and it doesn't alway work. It depends on how far they are gone already. If you do lose them- just know that you did your best and not to worry, I am sure someone will help in spring~ We have all been there.

And since it has not been mentioned, I will:

The log method. (this worked with an Adeline cutting way less than 1/2" in diameter)

Cut all the mush off.

Using fresh good quality potting soil in a quart to gallon plastic pot, fill it half way. Make sure it is damp but not wet-wet!

The pot has to be wide enough for the cutting. You may have to cut it in two or even three pieces to fit in the pot. And make sure each piece has at least one node; two or three nodes per piece is better.

Lay the piece, or pieces, down length-wise in the pot and space according to what you have, not touching pot's sides or each other, and press down on each piece until it is halfway embedded in the soil. Make sure there is good soil contact.

Cover pot with clear cellophane. Place in warm spot, under light or sunny window and check often to see when the leaves start growing. Slowly remove a little more of the plastic each day til it's totally removed in 4-5 days. I never have to water until the plastic is removed, but if I did, I would use ratio of 1TBL. hydrogen peroxide to 1 gallon of water.

I not only saved a cutting that was precious to me and impossible to replace at that time, but I got two plants out of a 4" cutting!

So, now you have lots of options. I know one will work for you! And there is Spring, when some of us will be able to share extra cuttings from this Fall.

That reminds me, I am using log method with green moss (in a ziplock under lights)for Hawiian Ti cuttings, wow you should see the nubbies on those things. No rot whatsoever.
I am planning on getting more unusual Ti's and have to get logs from HI (won't ship with roots to here) so I have been trying to find better ways of rooting my Ti's than dirt which rots sometimes. I have found this to work for little green brugs too (because of the humidity) and someone on another forum says they root ichromas via log method using orchid moss (instead of green), so I bet that may work with brugs as well. Hmmm wonder what else will root this way? roses, probably anything with nodes on the stems....I know it works on some orchids.

When I root in dirt and I am doing really well so far. I soak in a cup of Lukewarm water for about 2 days then I pot them up in styrophome cups with nice size holes for drainage. I only water about 2 a week maybe depending on the moistness. They dont like alot of wetdirt. I keep lights on them during the day till I go to bed and I keep the room warm around 70 and they are loving it. They are rooting better that way than leaving in water. The water to rot in water but this method is around 98% for me if not better. Ill try to post some updated pics. Mine seem to root better in a warmer room than cooler. I am so sorry. I find you have to keep a check daily on them to catch problems early.

looks like allot of great advise..... I would add, when you get roots and pot it don't put in too much water, I make the soil mixture moist, and then add it to the pot and I don't pack it down too much. I think in early stages, before the roots populate the container, you should be careful not to water too much.

Been using the "log" or horizontal method for the past few weeks and having much more success than with water rooting. My cuttings were behaving like
yours: doing fine and then ... wham... mushing. SJN and Brenda B giving good directions and advice. Try the log method, you may just save a few of your cuttings. Best of luck, I'm crying with you. Gloria
