Loquat blooming

My Loquat that I got as a seedling in 2000 is in bud now. The bees will likely be gone before the flowers open. Do I need to hand pollinate and hope for the best that my tree will bear fruit. It overwinters in my garage under lights (min temperature 32 F) Thanks

I'm curious, too, since mine's blooming for the first time as well.

In my yard there are always winter active pollinators, most often flies that look like bees. On warm winter days you find them swarming around whatever is in bloom. But since I would want the fruit I would go ahead and hand pollinate to the best of your ability and hope for the best. Around here they seem to bloom from Thanksgiving to Christmas with fruit forming early in the spring. I will build a heated shelter for mine if it ever decides to flower.

I think I'm out of styrax (although I have lots of seed) and I have several small loquats, but I'm leaving town and won't be back until the end of the month. That's why fruiting is sporadic or problematic in cold climates. Here in our part of USDA 8 Fragrant white flowers appear anytime from August through January, according to the tree, the situation, and the weather (Jacobson, TREES OF SEATTLE - SECOND EDITION) so that even in this comparatively mild zone successful fruiting does not appear to be a consistent annual occurrence.

Willy, Excalibur Rare Fruit Trees in Lake Worth has Red Limes. Now is a perfect time to buy one, as they are all dressed up for the Holidays with bright orange, perfectly round, unbelievably juicy fruits! I'm not sure which variety my new one is- it has a girlie name that I've forgotten. I'm too ill to walk out back to read the tag (have the flu). I have not tasted this fruit yet, the tree is new and small. I got it at Excalibur as well. My old tree that was killed by the hurricanes, had terrific, sweet, yellow fruits that tasted of apricots. I miss it! Loquarts *are* prone to fireblight, which is another reason not to fertilize them much. Rapid growth and humidity are prime factors in fireblight outbreaks. Affected trees can be cut way back, and Loquats cut to the ground nearly always grow back. Loquats can easily be kept short. Lisa

Hello Fenius...Good to see you)) Thank goodness for our scented growing flowering plants in winter..Thank goodness...Thank you for your kind comments) Robert, I wonder if the flower is still on your plant? Do they flower for a day and then gone? Bummer if so. Robert, thank you since I love these plants...I might just have to hang one way up in a tree exposed to full sun, maybe that would do it.I hear you about the Pliumies..lool I was bad, since my winters are soooooo long, I thought I was not supose to water until spring...I got that wrong..I desicated mine...Then if I did water, it was too often of the basement got to cold depending on how often the furnace would turn on....Such a balancing act...I have had thoughts of taking them out of the pot and holding them in paper bags and misting the roots and then replanting them in spring..But I have none left to practice with.ha Mike

Mine has flowered since I planted it a couple of years ago. Seems to me this year it is early and in full bloom now. I was thinking it usually blooms around Thanksgiving. I have mine in a sheltered area but have never had fruit from it. Love the delicious aroma though. Adele

This doesn't really relate to blooming, but I have 3 Loquat trees currently in pots. I dug them up last year from a massive number of seedlings that sprouted around one of the many Loquats on the USC campus. They're all about 4 feet tall now, and I want to put at least one in a large container and the others in the ground. The ones I see on campus are large and thriving, growing very close to buildings. (And I do mean very close - many are actually growing against the sides of the buildings and are quite old, judging by thier size and appearance.) Any advice on (1) whether or not it's a good idea to grow one in a container and (2) if they will do well in my oak-pine forest, sandy soil environment?
