Planting different types of citrus in the same pot

I have a very small yard but would like to grow several different types of citrus. If I planted two or three different types of citrus together (in the same hole), would that have the same effect as a fruit cocktail tree? I may end up just buying one of those, but they are so expensive.

Why not try to make your own Cocktail tree? Just buy a nice tree from the nursery and see if you can get some different types of budwood from friends. Grafting is surprisingly easy. Here is a link that describes in great detail how to graft (T-budding is easiest). I just tried it for the first time myself about a month ago and out of 8 attempted grafts it looks like 7 took. I did not even have to buy a grafting knife or grafting tape. I just used a razorblade for a shaving safety razor and some teflon tape that I had laying around the house.

Thank you, that is a great link. I have been thinking of attempting grafting but am a little intimidated. Those instructions are so clear with such great pictures though I may give it a try. Most of the ppl I know have lost their trees to the citrus canker nazis, so maybe I'll go get a couple of small trees from HD and give it a shot. Thanks for the help.

Thanks Josh The mix I am using is the same I used with my Alocasia that we discussed in your thread (I added the coconut during my recent repot). The Alocasia survived the winter continuing to grow leaves and after another repot, root prune, it is reestablished and growing yet more leaves! It just refuses to go dormant as everyone says will happen! Back to peppers: yikes I may not have room for 3 large pots! So even if I got one very large pot, I still should not be mixing the 3 plants in the same pot? I am going to have to do some rearranging with my window sill after the summer it seems!

Sorry, I should have been more clear. Yes, these pods came from the same plant. The one yellow pod was the first one I picked about 5 weeks ago. It was low on the plant and essentially covered with leaves to the point I did not notice it until I pulled branches aside. The remainder were just picked yesterday and are much more Orange. They never went through a "yellow" stage. I assume this can happen in F1's? On a side note, tonight I had 1/2 a pod of one in the second picture and holy crap they were hot.

To be VERY frank, I repotted when I purchased the tree, and then I did another time because I wanted a nice-looking planter that worked with my living room decor for indoors/winter, and the one I chose was too small. Definitely a learning moment, and the planter I have chosen now is the correct size and will work indoor/outdoor. Truly, just a me issue, not a citrus issue. Thanks, all! I repotted today and I think it went well. And this will be its home for a good long while.

You have a lot of different plants growing there but there are some general comments that can be made. Firstly you have far too many plants in your containers. The plants are basically starving due to overcrowding and competition. Pic 2 shows Oregano, a perennial capable of spreading over a couple of square feet, in the same small pot as Cilantro, a short lived annual. The Cilantro will naturally die off in a few weeks, whatever you do. Pic 6 shows a mass of seedlings which should have been thinned out long ago. The same applies to your Opium Poppies. So, the biggest problem is that your plants just do not have enough space. The secondary problem, aside from the space issue, appears to be nutritional. Even the plants which have a bit more space, e.g. the sunflower, do not appear to have sufficient nutrition.

One more question - I read somewhere that if you graft certain types of citrus together, the dominant one will overwhelm the others unless it is kept pruned back, grapefruit, for example. Is it recommended to stick with the same type of citrus, like all tangerines or all oranges? What is a good combination of citrus to put on my cocktail tree? I would like to grow some unusual types like yuzu, rangpur lime, ugli fruit, ortanique. Would those 4 do well together?

I can't help you on that one. I can see how a grapefruit graft could overwhelm the rest of the grafts but I would bet most others would be fine (probably even grapefruit if you keep it under control). I remember reading on this forum about someone that has something like 50 different varieties on one tree.
