Agave americana mediopicta alba question ...

How much San Antonio,Texas 103 degree sun can Agave americana mediopicta alba take? I'm considering a nice size specimen seen at a nursery. The place I want to plant it gets about 5 hours of sun in the summer and I'm wondering if a dappled shade area might be best for it.. Any ideas on this? Maybe if I waited until fall to plant it so has time to acclimate through the spring it could take it?

And then there is the hardiness question. It's said to be hardy down to 20 degrees.. We rarely, but occasionally get a night or two into the mid teens or lower, but I'm not above throwing a blanket over it. Are there any other considerations before I plunk down thirty two dollars?

They take full sun here in the Phoenix area, so should be fine with anything you can throw at 'em, and they're good down to at least 20F. They do seem particular prone to fungal infections, so best to keep 'em high and dry.

Here is a list of FULL summer sun adapted agaves for PHOENIX area that GermanStar (a forum participant here)and friends worked up on Xericworld, another forum . A americana started out on it but somewhere dropped off. I see it in full sun here in Austin and it does alright but it is thirstier than other agaves. It is not as xeric as some. I think it should do 5 hours of sun fine just don't let it get too dry. I have not actually grown A. mediopicta so maybe you should listen to someone else. LOL

germanstar is your man . He grows a huge # of species of Agave in the Phoenix area.I am sure that he will poke his head i here soon.

Thanks Texas and Patrick for your responses. I have tried outside but on the porch so it would not get rain but it still rotted. I thought maybe it was the humidity so that is why I was trying inside with these two small ones I currently have. They are in a southeast window and get quite good sun and so far are doing ok. By next spring I will hopefully have my small greenhouse up so maybe I will have better luck after that. Thanks Patrick for saving me the time and effort of trying the cuttings... I had never heard anyone mention propagating agaves from cuttings rather than offsets but I just thought I'd ask. Oh well, I am gonna keep trying since it is one of my favorite agaves...someday I hope to have a larger one again. Thanks again, logan

I have one for several years. My large mother plant died of rot but I was lucky it had a small pup. Pictured with Aloe that was given to me. It never produced pups and the one time it did, rot got to it. I left it out too late in fall with too much rain and cold. It is slow growing. Stush

Agave desmetiana and attenuata are common to see at nurseries around here. The Mediopicta Alba may be a little harder to track down. Yes, you can grow all three of these in pots, but the americana will eventually get too large for that. It's a slow grower, even more so in a pot, so it will do just fine in a container for years. In fact, all three of these have gracefully recurved leaves that look great in fancy pots. A retailer with a good selection of Agaves and other succulents is Half Moon Bay nursery on Rt. 92. Many retail nurseries in this area buy their Agaves wholesale from San Marcos Growers. Check out their web site, they have the plants you want. Then check their retailer list for Northern California here to find one near you. Then contact that retailer and tell them what you want. Depending on the item and its cost, you may be required to pay up front, no refunds, but you'll be able to select from a long list of great Agaves. Succulent Gardens in Castroville has some agaves, not an extensive list, but I think Robin Stockwell grows the three you want. Call first, but a visit to his growing grounds is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Brad

GermanStar, thanks for the helpful information! If it can take it in Phoenix it can sure take sun in San Antonio. I'll keep it high and well drained. Tomorrow I'll be paying a visit to the nursery that has it.

GS and I seem to Have a different take on the moisture. I would go with him since I have not grown it. I guess that keep it high and dry but keep your eye on it for dryness. I would protect it the first couple of years. It has been my experience that it takes a couple of years for agaves to become hardy.
