They are new shoots. New growth is often purple.

It most definitely is new growth. I just purchased two Australian finger limes this year from Four Winds. On my trees, the flower buds came first. They are pink/purple on the outside. The new leaves came next. The leaves are very small and elliptical. They don't resemble any of my other citrus trees. I'm very anxious to see any finger limes. They look like little cucumbers.

Four Winds is the only place I have ever seen them! Which is odd, but they sell out of them pretty quickly. I got one of the last trees. I think the new ones will be ready by Sept I think Toby said???

Completely Different. Well, Not completely, as they are both from Australia. Your trees fruit will be round, bumpy like a kaffir lime. The Finger lime looks like a Big Seed pod and has all of these tiny citrus balls that spill out when you cut it open. I got the chance to taste a few from the green variety. It looks just like the new growth on my finger lime. I got leaves first then flowers then more leaves. All the little flowers fell off when I was aclimizing it (i.e. trying to find the right spot for it outdoors after I got it lol) but it is growing quite well.
Anyone have any thoughts on this:: I read that in Austrailia the fingerlime is an understory plant. So do you think that it likes partial shade? I ended up with mine in an area that gets full morning sun with some late afternoon shade. It is growing like gangbusters there. When I just leave it in full sun here all day it seems to get some die back on the tips. Just wondering what your situation with your fingerlimes has been and thoughts on full sun with this plant?

Sultry, if your citrus is doing great in the one area, I'd keep it growing there..Or, if you think it needs more light, you can gradully move from the one spot until it's in direct sun. Toni

Crap. I had a BUNCH of recent dieback on the tips but now I am getting new growth. It is sitting in a spot on the patio that gets a good 11.5 hours of sun from 7am-6:30pm. Maybe I will move it to a cooler spot, but not before I hit the internet to do some research....

Citrus, you are SO lucky getting sun in one area for 11.5 hours..I don't have that option..not as far as direct sun anyway, or even what I'd consider brightest light.

Well, I just verified, from numerous sources, that the Australian Finger Lime IS an "Understory" tree used to getting light from underneath a tree canopy. Thanks Sultry Jasmine! You probably saved my Finger Lime. It is now in it's new happy place and should get about 4 hours of sun. I'll definately be keeping an eye on it.

I'm Originally from Chicago, Toni. Don't you guys in IL get SUPER LONG days during the summer!? Which, of course, are made up for by the 6 hours of daylight in Winter.

I am very lucky to have a big sunny patio. Citrus that are getting the 11.5 hours right now are my screening wall citrus: Temple Tangor, Kaffir Lime #1, Oro Blanco Grapefruit, Minneola Tangelo, Rangpur & Palestine Sweet Lime, Sanguinelli and Moro blood oranges, Yuzu and my Cara Cara Pink Orange.

Just removed the horsetail reeds that were supposed to be blocking the hideous pool eqt (Never grew about 3 feet) and am in the process of replacing with home made espaliered citrus. Which will also be getting about 11 hours. These are going to be two per container citrus: Bergamot and Seville Sour Orange, Bearss #2 and Kaffir Lime #2, Tarocco #2 and Moro Blood Orange #2. All of which will be grafted to be 2 in 1 trees once I get my budwood from UCR.

Anyone know how long it will take the dinky little guys to get up to size? I got them from http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/ (trade winds fruit.com) as seeds and now have tiny leaved big thorned green treelets.
I am hoping a few more will come up . . . Trade winds says the mother trees are red fleshed and yellow fleshed, mostly red.

Finger limes are not true to seed, so I'm not sure if you will get fruit or not. I think 5-8 years from seed to maturity.
