overwinter perennial mums in garage?

I bought some perennial mums from BlueStone in the Summer and put them in large pots. They are still in the pots and blooming. I have read that they can be wintered over in the garden if they had enough time to put out roots or in a protected place if left in pots. I dont want to dig them into the ground now. Can I leave them in my garage over the winter? DO they need a light? Should I be bringing them into the garage on the 1st frost night? Anyone had luck overwintering mums here in the Carolinas? In pots?

Thanks for any advice.
